9-21-11 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 09-21-2011

While looking through some of my files I have on Turbo Buicks, I found copies of material related to the GNX project. Some GNX owners may not be aware of some of this information.

PHOTO 1 - The photo on the left shows a copy of the letter ASC appears to have sent out to GNX owners. It is not dated. It basically covers information about the drivetrain, including the fact the transmission has different calibration from a Grand National for improved performance. It also goes on to say you can't rotate the tires because the wheels are different offsets and the tires are different sizes. Ironically, it also says there is no clearance for tire chains! It goes on to state any aftermarket performance products will void your warranty. The letter also says Buick dealers will not stock GNX specific parts due to low volume of the GNX. Since I have a copy of the ASC McLaren envelope (photo on the right,) I assume this letter was mailed to original GNX owners.

PHOTO 2 - Photo on the left shows a letter from Molly Designs dated May 12, 1988, and the lower photo on the left shows the envelope, and the lower photo on the right shows the postcard. The letter is addressed to GNX owners and informs them that they will be getting a beautiful hard cover book detailing the design, development, and production of the GNX. Additionally they have designed a handsome jacket exclusively for GNX owners. Both the book and the jacket were free of charge to the GNX owner. The letter also states the GNX owner must mail back an enclosed postcard with their GNX car number, VIN number, and jacket size.

This letter reads, "Dear GNX Owner:

Congratulations on being one of the fortunate 547 people who own a Buick/ASC GNS automobile.

We are presently completing a beautiful hard cover book detailing the design, development and production of the GNX. It is full of facts and lavish pictures, employing the finest printing and binding.

Additionally, we have designed a handsome jacket, exclusively for GNX owners.

Both the book and the jacket are yours free of charge. Simply fill in the enclosed post-paid card and return to us as soon as possible. We need to know the number of your GNX, as well as the VIN number, plus your jacket size. Both will be mailed in early July.

This is our way of not only enhancing the value of your car, but of saying "Thank You" from Buick and ASC.

Regards, Molly"

At the time Molly sent out this letter, it never stated that the GNX book would be numbered to match your GNX car number. This decision may have come later.

PHOTO 3 - The photo on the top left shows the cover of the GNX book. The photo on the top right shows page 1 in the GNX numbered 11 book. Notice the book also has Molly's autograph on the page. I don't think Molly autographed all the original numbered books, but may have done it on the ones I bought from him. He may have autographed other GNX books at the various events he attended.

It appears that the line of copy, "Buick GNX, printing limited to 547 editions, this is number" was preprinted in the 547 books and then a numbered stamp may have been used to individually number each book. This would have been the least expensive method to do this. Plus the actual number appears in a different font style.

In larger print run of the other GNX books, page 1 is blank except for the page number 1.

The lower photo shows pages 2 and 3 with a beautiful shot of 2 GNX prototypes. The line at the bottom reads, "GNX prototypes No. 1 and No. 2 at Milan Dragway, Milan, Michigan, October 24, 1986."

We can not verify just how many hardbound GNX books Buick and Molly actually printed. In the numbered books, the wording reads, "Buick GNX, printing limited to 547 editions, this is number 11."

We all know the GNX book was not limited to 547 copies. At one time I had well over 125 copies of the unnumbered issues. At one time, The Sloan Museum had quite a supply of GNX books as well.

Taking an educated guess, I would think the real number of GNX books that were printed would be 1,000 to 2,500 maximum. Again, this is just a guess on my part.

Unfortunately, many of the original GNXs were sold and resold to other dealers or speculators and some actual private owners never were aware of the free GNX jacket or the numbered GNX book they were entitled to. This was before the internet, so information was not as widely known at the time. Some of you may recall that about 4 years ago I bought about 50 numbered unclaimed GNX books that Molly still had.

PHOTO 4 - The upper photos show a copy of the News Release ASC did dated February 2, 1987 concerning the unveiling of the Limited Edition GNX model. At this point in time, in this letter the production was going to be 500 GNX models. This news release went on to state the special features that the GNX would have. It was a 3-page News Release with an additional two pages entitled "PERFORMANCE PERSPECTIVE FROM BUICK 1987 BUICK REGAL GNX."

The lower photos show the two-page Performance Perspective on the GNX that was part of the ASC News Release. These two pages basically gave the dimensions, Powertrain Specifications, Frame. Chassis, Suspension Steering, Brakes Parking Brake, and Wheels. In most cases, many of the specfications shown here would have been the same as a Turbo Regal or Grand National.

The clue as to his importance in the automotive field can be traced to his last name. He invented the Ziebart rust-proofing process that many U.S. new car companies use. He was 91 years old! He immigrated from Germany as a master auto mechanic. "His wife said the idea for developing a rust-proofing process came when the couple hosted friend from Germany, who remarked on the poor state of U.S. vehicles. Kurt Ziebart went to work on ways to protect new cars from the ravages of water and road salt."

We did receive a color copy of a 1985 Turbo Regal window sticker, thanks to Brad Fairhurst.

We STILL need to borrow an original or get a good color photocopy of the 1984 Turbo Regal window sticker. This will enable us to get a copy properly made for other Buick owners. Triple A Enterprises has the ability to match the font style GM used, so quality of the reproduction window stickers is very good.

Currently we have less than half of our roll left, as several customers have bought 2 and 3 sections of it to do several cars. So, if you have a 1985-1987 Grand National, you may want to get a sample of this material to see if it's something you want to have tucked away. Most of the pallex material you find today from companies sells for over $75 to $95 a yard.

We do NOT have the black pallex material. In many cases, the original black material should be good enough to simply re-use and install the new gray pallex material. The black is a lot easier to match whereas the gray is something that can vary. Keep in mind, before we sell you any material, please email me your name and address so I can send you a sample. That way, you know the exact shade of gray material you would receive - [email protected]

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

Got any turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - [email protected]

Also, we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.

OCTOBER 19-22, 2011 - Beech Bend Raceway, Bowling Green, KY

The 31st Annual GS Nationals will be held October 19-22 in Bowling Green, KY. Last year the weather was just perfect with autumn colors greeting us on the beautiful drive there. The GS Nationals is by far the largest and longest running Buick musclecar event in the world. There will be many race classes, the usual big Friday Car Show, swap meet, Vendor's Row and even tech seminars.

For the turbo V-6 guys, John Gallina and crew will return once again with Kenny Duttweiler for even deeper blasts into the 6's, eclipsing last year's 6.85/204 mph pass! Hope to see all you hard-core Buick fans there to share the fun! No pre-registration is necessary.

We will be in attendance as a vendor. This event replaces the one that used to be held in May each year.

For more information, check out their website - http://www.gsnationals.com
