Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 09-12-2012

The third brake light became standard with the introduction of the 1986 car models. On the early versions it looked like it an add-on part rather than something that was molded into the back package shelf or mounted in the trunk lid.

For the last several weeks, I have been going to several major "You Pull It" yards in the area and have made several discoveries. One being, the third brake light for the early years, the main housings are almost all the same. GM used a different base depending on the car model and the angle of the back shelf to the back window. The rubber-like shield varied in length as well. It appears that the base Buick used in the Regal models was unique to all the G-body models as all the other late 1980s GM cars used different bases. Within a few years the third brake light was blended into the rear package shelf, or molded in a rear spoiler or in the trunk lid.

On the early convertibles the third brake like looked more like a speed bump on the top of the trunk lid.

Depending on what kind of life your 1986-1987 Turbo Buick has had, the third brake light can be in pretty bad shape. Heat can cause the housing to warp badly. The rubber-like shield can become distorted. The bulb can become fused in the socket, and the socket housing can become brittle and fall apart. Also the top of the housing can become very badly faded.

PHOTO 1 - In the top photo we show a wide assortment of early GM third brake lights. If you look closely you can see that it's just the base portion that is different in these early designs. The basic housings are all the same. The rubber extension also varies in width in each version. In the lower photo we show a 100% correct 1986-1987 Regal third brake light. This version would actually be correct for all 1986-1987 G-body applications. Notice how the base is angled whereas most of the other third brake light bases are straight and different lengths.

PHOTO 2 - In the top photo we use a red arrow to show where the clip can break off that secures the plug in harness. In the lower photo we show where the socket housing can be burnt out and become distorted.

PHOTO 3 - In this photo we show three that we have refurbished, one in grey, one in burgundy and one in blue. These have been cleaned, repainted using the spray paint that we sell for the 3 main colors. Our part number for the paint is #6822. We highly recommend you have at least one can of the interior spray paint in your collection for any interior touch-up work. We also install a brand new light bulb and test each one. The light sockets in the refurbished ones are not busted. All that is needed is for you to reinstall your original base to this unit. See the Rare Parts section in this issue for refurbished units we have available for sale.

Years ago we produced a variety of third brake light inserts. It was a clever way to send a message when you applied the brakes. We now carry one that says, "UD LOSE."

1986-1987 Buick Regal (All Models) -

This lens insert fits into the third brake light in the rear window of any 1986-1987 Buick Regal.
The words “UD LOSE” shows up when you apply the brakes.

Insert measures approximately 5-3/4" x 1-1/4", is produced on special clear material to avoid yellowing, and is not affected by heat. Lens insert is easy to install. It simply slips in behind the red third brake light lens.

We recently heard from Dave Sichko, a customer of ours who owns a 1988 LeSabre T-Type. He has some very unique original GM carpet savers in his collection. In an earlier Inner Circle we mentioned that GM did have a grey carpet saver with a partial of the red "Power Six" logo available. I also recall seeing some others that GM did that had the word T-Type embroidered on them years ago. I knew they were for front wheel drive models.

The later front wheel drive models, unlike our rear wheel drive Regals, had the same identical carpet savers for both the driver's side and passenger's side. In other words, both sides were identical.

PHOTO 4 - Dave was kind enough to send us some photos. The top left shows the red partial red "Power Six" design on the grey floor mats he has. These appear in the rare 1986 LeSabre Grand National. The top right photo shows a set of original GM embroidered T-Type floor mats. Since these are for later front wheel drive applications, the carpet savers are wider than the mats in our Regals. The lower photo shows the same style embroidered floor mats in burgundy.

Dave believes both the grey and burgundy mats may be from the rare Electra T-Type models, which are extremely rare.

We thank Dave for sharing these photos with our readers.

The trailer for the Grand National movie that Andrew Filippone Jr has spent several years working on is available online. This trailer shows parts of Richard Clark's shop and one of our Reunion events at the Johnsville airbase back in 1990. I was a lot younger then! The movie release date will be December 11th, 2012 - exactly 25 years after the last Grand National rolled down the assembly line!

This DVD is sure to bring more interest in our cars.

We will have this DVD available at that time.

Click on the link below to see the trailer.

Last Saturday as I was leaving a "You Pull It" yard, a saw a group of four young guys carrying a metal hood that they had bought to their car. They flipped it upside down and put it on the roof of their sedan. With the windows rolled down, each of them grabbed an edge of the hood to hold it as they took off driving down the highway. No ropes, nothing to secure it, just 4 hands out the window holding a full-size metal hood on the roof of this sedan!

This clear plastic lightweight car cover is an ideal way to keep dust off your car in the garage or if you get caught in the rain at a car show. It’s a great way to protect your car if it sits inside in a dusty environment, such as a body shop.

It’s a universal car cover, and will fit any full size car. Easy to install since it has an elastic hem around the bottom. It is not designed to protect your car from full sunlight and it does not have any UV protection. It is simply an inexpensive cover to keep dust from getting on your car.

The photos show the car cover on a Grand National.

NOTE - We also offer another car cover, 1978-1987 Turbo Regal - Universal Fit Clear Plastic Car Dust Cover, Part #7452.

Once again we find ourselves needing complete powermaster brake cores. By complete we mean they must have a brake bowl, switch, and reservoir with lid. They can't look like they have been sitting 6 months in the local river.

You must email me direct - [email protected] - if you can help us help others.

For a limited time, we will issue a $125 Letter of Credit towards any of our website parts. Shipping by mail is the cheapest method to send it to us. If you are sending it by mail, you must use our PO Box in the address - Kirban Performance Products, P.O. Box 1199, Plumsteadville, PA 18949-1199. You MUST include your name, full address and a note explaining this is a core for the $125 Letter of Credit in the box. Do not send anything until you first email me, so we have a record of what units to expect.

This $125 Letter of Credit deal expires once we get ample cores. We still need more complete cores! We still need more cores.

This dash is just like the GNX. It has all new Stewart Warner gauges with sending units as needed. It includes a new upper speedometer cable, directions with a copy of the original AS blueprints, a good used original gauge bezel, new applique, most important a pre-cut stock dash bezel. In other words, this is a complete kit ready to install. You do not have to cut any part of your dash, you simply remove your dash and drop this one in. All the gauges are all pre-fit properly.

The only item you will have to buy to complete it is the proper plug-and-play harness, which is available from World of Motorworks. You have to specify if you have an analog dash or a digital dash when you order the harness.

The price for this complete GNX-style dash is $1,995 plus shipping.

Pete Hoffman has a limited number of the reproduction GNX Suspension Systems available. These are the Richard Clark systems that he has had made locally.

They are nearly exact to the originals, down to the welds and material used. They come with complete detailed instructions.

Limited availability!

Got any turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - [email protected]

Also, we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE - We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

OCTOBER 17-20, 2012 - Wednesday - Saturday
Beach Bend Raceway, Bowling Green, Kentucky

Racing is FREE on Wednesday, October 17th. The correct dates are October 17-20, 2012. Because of the reschedule, they have negotiated FREE racing on Wednesday, October 17th. This includes "everyone" who comes thru the gate and pays the usual nominal entrance fee. There is NO usual additional charge to race your Buick powered cars on Wednesday.

The BCA (Buick Club of America) will be joining the GSCA event. This combination will make for a well-rounded event featuring all kinds of Buicks. This is one fall event you do not want to miss!

In addition to having representatives from Reynolds Buick of Wes Covina CA in attendance, it appears we also may have Jim Bell of Kenne-Bell fame also in the house. Don Reynolds Buick sponsored Pop Kennedy's unbeatable Buick's starting in '59 thru the early 60's.

Also scheduled to be in attendance & possibly racing is famed CA Buick racer Fred Caitlin. Reynolds Buick will be celebrating their 100th anniversary as a Buick dealer and will be highlighted & honored during the event. Add to this, the presence of BCA members attending, should offer additional interest & fun at the event.

Once again we will be attending this national event as we have every year since 1988. Pete Hoffman and of course Richard Clark will be there also.
