Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 01-30-2013

Most of us that bought Turbo Regals when they were brand new did so after the dealership prepped the car, washed it, and stuck his dealer name on the trunk lid. Part of the prep work would be to remove the protective film over the dash cluster bezel, and around the radio. They would also peel off the label that was affixed to the ash tray housing behind your driver’s seat.

What you probably are not aware of was two other decals the dealer would remove were stuck to the outside windshield usually on the driver’s side.

Even with my knowledge of these cars I was not aware of these two decals until a few years ago when Richard Clark showed them to me.

PHOTO 1 - Here we show both decals that would have been on your car prior to being prepped. Both are about the same size approximately three inches in length. One denotes the car was assembled in Flint and the other decal refers to United Auto Works and stresses Partners in Quality. (I think the word Quality in this statement was slightly overlooked during the painting process!) The third decal shown is one we have written about before that I believe came only on the Turbo Riviera’s. It mounted on the inside of the windshield and would have been signed by the person that tested the turbo.

Another item you may or may not be aware of, relates to the holder that Buick provided the car owner to hold their owner’s manual and other related booklets in the glove box. Many of you own later model cars and you know that the owner’s manuals and related booklets usually come in a nice zippered cloth or vinyl holder.

During the model years 1984-1987 Buick at least on the Regal models and perhaps other models appeared to let dealers provide their own glove box manual holder.

PHOTO 2 - This photo we show two typical such glove box manual holders. These generally where printed on heavy card stock. The O’Neil one we show is a recent one that they provide today with used cars. On the back of both of these is a section for notes and related information in case of an accident. Buick never did provide a unique holder for our cars. Sometimes I have seen printed clear plastic manual holders as well.

Now that I am going to various U Pull Yards I am finding different things and items that can be used on our cars from later Buick models.

PHOTO 3 - At some point in the late 1980s and early 1990s Buick used several different owner manual holders. This photo shows the two versions that I have found in various Buick models. Both have the wording and logo embossed on the front. These holders are about a 3/4 inch too short to totally cover your 1984-1987 Turbo Regal owners’ manuals. However, being they are Buick they are a nice item to have to protect your owner’s manual and other supplement manuals in your glove box. (See rare parts section in this issue). The only colors I have found for this style Buick owner’s manual holder is, blue or black.

PHOTO 4 - Here is still another early 1990s Buick owner’s manual holder only this one has a vertical format. The logo and wording on this is also embossed.

A magazine with male readers will be familiar with Maxim Jan/Feb 2013 issue has 3 page spread on the Buick Grand Nationals. The author of the article attended a local MAGNA Club Event last year that featured 22 Turbo Buicks at a Red Robin restaurant in nearby Neshaminy, Pennsylvania. Jim Chaudrue took the author of the article for a quick spin around the block! The article is entitled “Black Dynamite”.

As many of you know several major auctions related to the classic car market hold auctions over the winter months. At Kansas City this past December at the Mecum Auction a 1986 Grand National listed in #3 condition sold for $14,500. At the Mecum Auction recently held in Florida a Grand National $40,000 and a GNX sold for $80,000 showing 100 miles. At the recent Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale a loaded 1987 Grand National with T-Tops and lots of chrome under the hood topped out at $37,500.

Based on these results you can see that the Buick Grand National still demands a great deal of attention among collectors and keeps popping up in magazine articles.

The name we have picked for our Turbo character is Tommy Turbo and it was submitted by Tom Crandell from Dallas, Texas. We will have a special prize going to him in about a week. The name works for the way the main character has been drawn by Fred Boatman.

Fred is already working on our first two Turbo cartoons. We will probably run one of his cartoons about every fourth or fifth email.
Fred Boatman started working for Peterson Publishing Company back around 1963 and did many of the CARtoons, SURFtoons, CYCLEtoons, Car Craft and Rod and Custom magazines. He also did work for Mr Gasket. He is now semi-retired.

A few years back a paperback book was published which features all his automotive cartoons from 1962 to 1976 over 300 pages! You can find his book usually on ebay its entitled Cartoons on Wheels by Fred Boatman. I had to send Fred photos of the Turbo Regals so he can get acquainted with our cars for his cartoons!

The recently released movie Black Air produced by Andrew Filippone Jr. has now been made available to wholesalers. We have our first shipment in stock and all our back orders have been filled. It will not be set up on our website until next week to order through our website.

However, you can call our office now and place your order for the Black Air DVD. As a bonus you will also receive absolutely free the 1990 Kirban Reunion DVD that we just had put on a DVD format. This is a 25 minute DVD of the Buick portion of the 1990 Kirban Reunion Event we held at the Johnsville airbase. It was at this event that the last GNX was there and we had 98 Grand Nationals lined up bumper to bumper. A sight that I am sure will never ever be repeated again.

If you have any product ideas that would fit our Turbo Buick market, that we may consider email me direct [email protected]

Got any turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list [email protected]

Also, we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE - We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

Locally to our office, a dealership that sells used cars has a unique car on consignment.
I thought it may interest one of our local readers. It is a 1992 Regal GS white with a grey leather interior. It has the usual options. Car has a clean car fax and inspected. The car is all original and is in extremely nice condition. It appears to have been garage kept. The best part is the car only has 20,000 original miles on it. The asking price is $4995.00. Car does need a good detail but is quite nice as it sits I can email photos to interested people.
