8-12-09 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 08-12-2009

Last week I took a trip to Richard Clark's place in Burlington, North Carolina. He and I had bought a 1986 T-Type... he removed the drivetrain and I bought the rest of the car.

While I was there, he showed me a very interesting 1987 Buick item he had bought on ebay. We show it in 2 photos on our website under this Inner Circle 08-12-09.

PHOTO 1 - His purchase consisted of two display boards in the original box. The boards measured about 2 feet tall by 3 feet wide.

The boards were entitled, "1987 Buick Color and Trim Selections."

Across the top of the board were samples of all the available exterior colors and the various Buick models. They listed 3 different black exterior colors available in 1987 for the various Buick models.

Also on this same board was an actual sample of the various seat materials and what Buick models they came in. The Grand National used the black and grey Pallex cloth material, which is in the first column to the left in our first photo.

This was an original display that was sent to a Buick dealership and never used!

Normally these cardboard displays came out every year for each new model. Once they were on display, dealers would typically throw them away at the end of each model year. It's very rare to find these new in the box, especially after 22+ years.

This same information was also available in a 3-ring binder that the dealers had back then. Today, with the internet and DVDs, these displays are very limited for promotional use.

PHOTO 2 - We show various views of the box these display boards came in. The postmark was dated in the fall of 1986. The photo on the left shows the top of the box. The top photo on the right shows a closeup of the identification label. It shows the BUICK logo, then "ATTN: SALES MANAGER - CONTAINS 1987 BUICK - Color and TRIM Boards Update - ITEM #23 - PLEASE OPEN AND INSPECT IMMEDIATELY UPON ARRIVAL." The bottom photo on the right shows the shipping label and says, "BUICK DISPLAY & GIFT HEADQUARTERS."

PHOTO 3 - I show Richard at the test stand on a bench he built to test Turbo Regal powermaster brake bowls. I take him some powermaster brake bowls to test whenever I travel to his shop. It's like playing the lottery. We first do a simple test at our shop, and out of every 10 that pass our simple test, we are lucky if we get 1 or 2 that actually pass his testing. Once they pass his final test, then we can finally sell those as good used brake bowls!

Since I am gone this week (August 11th through the 16th), I'm having some of our office staff participate and write a small blurb for the Inner Circle! I will be at the "Back to the Bricks" event in Flint, Michigan. It should, at the very least, be an entertaining Inner Circle.

PHOTO 4 - FROM EILEEN KIRBAN - I have enjoyed meeting many of our customers at the various events over the years. Since Dennis insisted that we all add to the Inner Circle this week, I thought I would mention how much Dennis pays close attention to detail. His favorite way to relax is to clean and detail his cars, his garage and our home property. He especially likes to go over all the cars he's sold over the years - inside and out.

He will be the first to tell you that he is not mechanical, but he can tell you what to use to clean any part of your car.

To illustrate this, I am posting a photo I recently took of him "cleaning" the drain area in our back yard (he had already done the ones out front.) He actually takes the shop vac and runs the electric out to the area and vacuums up any debris that might clog the drain... now that's a detail fanantic... just the person to keep the cars clean.

Thanks to all our customers and Buick friends. Have a great summer! Eileen

FROM CHRISTINA DOMENE - Christina handles our order desk and has been with us for 10 years. Many of you have spoken to her on the phone and will remember her cheery voice. Here's her contribution to this week’s Inner Circle...

SWF Just kidding! I was going to put up a singles ad, but then thought it probably wasn't a good idea...

So I was wondering, how do you drive a Grand National and still have your driver's license? As I was paying my last speeding ticket, it dawned on me that I could never be a Turbo Buick owner because I would loose my license from speeding!

Ten years ago when I started working for Dennis, he MADE me test-drive his Buick at the time. Oh my! What a rush! I couldn't believe the feeling of it. I can only say it was that of a roller coaster. And it was then that I realized what the craze was about. That was fun. Unfortunately, he only let me drive it once.

As you can tell I am keeping it short, but I did want to say thank you to all the great customers we have. Your passion for this car is incredible! And when you do place your order, I will NOT tell your wife! Christina

FROM PETE HOFFMAN - Pete has been with us for almost 10 years. He is our office manager and also handles all the packing and shipping. He's a valuable asset because of his Turbo Buick knowledge. So, when you call with a tech question, you're usually passed along to Pete. He has written a very informative book, "INFORMATION GUIDE - 1986-1987 BUICK TURBO REGALS ENGINE," Part #7039.
Click Here to See Part #7039

This is a must-have book for any Turbo Regal owner. Keep it with the car as a reference guide so any mechanic will have the information at their fingertips. He is often asked about brake problems and will be sharing some helpful information. Here is Pete's contribution to this week's Inner Circle...

We average about 50 emails and phone Tech questions every day! By far, the hottest topic is trouble shooting the Powermaster Brake Unit. These units were engineered for a lifespan of about 10 years. During that time, if you had the Brake Switch Recall done, you probably would have had a trouble-free experience.

Now that some of these units are almost 25 years old (powermaster production started in March of 1985), they are becoming problematic.

The most common complaint is a hard pedal. A lot of our customers call this "brake failure." Technically it's not brake failure, it's a loss of power assist.

If you are driving along and you hit the brakes and get a hard pedal, you can still stop the car. But it will require a lot more pedal pressure from you. Basically, you have manual brakes at this point.

There could be any number of things wrong with the unit. You could even have more than one problem.

Usually the powermaster will give you some warning of an upcoming problem. Listen for any unusual noises or any abnormal brake pedal feel. If you hit the brake pedal and the brake light comes on for a few seconds, that could indicate a problem.

Also when you start the car, watch the brake light. If it is staying on longer than normal, that would also indicate a problem.

Lastly, change the brake fluid twice a year, regardless of how many miles you have driven the car. The biggest enemy of the powermaster is dirty fluid. Most Turbo Regal owners never change there brake fluid.

Next week we will go into some detail on diagnosing the common problems of the Powermaster. Pete

NOW AVAILABLE - ZPASTE™ - The Ultimate Cam Assembly Lubricant

We now have the new ZPaste™ available and in stock. There is absolutely nothing available nationally, in the market today that comes near the abilities that this cam assembly paste lubricant. Not only is it the best to use for assembling a flat-tappet engine, but it works equally well on a roller setup.

The special formulation keeps ZPaste™ on contact points longer than other lubes, protecting parts from damage during initial start-up. After being dissolved in the oil, the components in ZPaste™ will continue to help protect engine parts during break-in.

This new ZPaste™ along with ALL the major competing brands have undergone over six months of testing.

When used in conjunction with ZDDPlus™ (4 ounce bottle) in a normal 4-6 quart oil capacity, no special break-in oil is required.

It comes in a 5/8-ounce packet, which is enough for one V8 application. The price is $6.99 plus shipping, Part #7240.

We are confident most of the cam companies that are using and selling ZDDPlus™ will also start offering this with their new camshafts for the retail market.

Now with the new ZPaste™ and ZDDPlus™ we have both ends of the oil issues addressed making sure protection starts at the very beginning.
