Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 12-09-2015 -

Remember Sunday December 7th, 1941 when the Japanese launched a successful surprise attack that fateful morning has a special meaning in our family. My father-in-law, Nick Tinari, was in the Army stationed in Hawaii that fateful morning, as was his future father-in-law.

Some of you may recall when we did a story about having a part of one of the actual Japanese planes that was part of that surprise attack. A few years ago my mother-in-law gave me this memento for safekeeping.

A staff reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer recently interviewed us for an article that they published in this past Sunday’s newspaper. If you have Sunday’s Inquirer (12-6-2015), the article appears on the second page of the section A.

It was also featured on their website. Here is a link to read the story online:

Here is more information from my archives.

As we have mentioned in the past, the Buick Press Kits for any of the 1980s is quite rare to find today. Besides doing a Press Kit for each year featuring all the Buick models for that given year, they also did separate Press Kits for some of the special models. The oldest one I have on the Regal model is the News Media Information packet for the Buick Official Pace Car Indy 500 May 24th 1981. To be the one that gets to Pace the annual Indy 500 race is always quite an honor for a car company.

PHOTO 1 - The top left photo shows the actual front of the packet. The top middle photo shows one of the pages of the Press Release. The top right shows 2 pictures of the Pace car. The lower photo shows a color photo of the actual car.

NOTE - I may have a second copy of this Press Kit for sale. Email me - [email protected] if you are interested. This is extremely rare to find one of these today.

The Regal model that was the first to sport the Grand National badges is the 1982 Regal Grand National. The Press Release is dated February 10, 1982. The quote by Lloyd E Reuss, Buick General Manager and a General Motors Vice-President said, “The distinctive Grand National will be used to help Buick dealers capitalize on the success of the Buick nameplate on the NASCAR circuit.”

PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows the actual front of the packet. The top middle photo shows one of the pages of the Press Release. The top right photo shows two photos of the 1982 Grand National from the press packet. The bottom photo shows an actual color photo from the Press kit.

As you know the 1982 Grand National saw limited production and featured a number of different parts on it compared to the production 1982 Regals. These parts are all listed on a special service bulletin from Buick dated March of 1983. This is just over a year later than when the 1982 Grand National was announced. What I found interesting is on the parts listing the grille and headlight bezels you had to paint as required. In other words, they did not come painted in black from the factory. This is probably because of such low production numbers. Another item I found interesting was the Service Bulletin broke down all the parts for the Lear Siegler seat parts. They show 22 different parts for the Lear Siegal bucket seat.

PHOTO 3 - From the Buick Dealer Service Bulletin dated March 1983 we show the one page that has the 1982 Grand National illustration. For each unique exterior part on the Grand National Regal they list the GM part number. What’s interesting is that the rocker panel moldings and wheel well moldings have to be covered with vinyl tape stone guard film. This is indicated with an asterisk. I can only assume Buick never produced them in the proper color that was used on this limited production Grand National for 1982.

The other special Buick Press Kit I have is for the 1983 Indianapolis 500 Official Pace Car. That year featured the Buick Riviera convertible as the Pace car.

PHOTO 4 - The photo on the left shows the actual front of the packet. The photo on the right shows the 1983 Buick Riviera Convertible Pace Car.

More information next week from my archives on Buick Press Kits.

On the news front - The January 2016 issue of MUSCLE MACHINES magazine has a 6-page article about Tom Kelly and the original 1987 Grand National that he bought.

If you’re sharp, in the one photo you can see that the power antenna is broken. In the article Tom admits to having owned a few Grand Nationals over the years. What sold him on this GN was the fact it was original, including the paint, and the car had all the paperwork. This Grand National also has the astro roof option. The car still retained all its original paint. He even got the original Window Sticker from Arnold Palmer Motors (yes, the same Arnold Palmer the golfer).

Two things that will increase the value on these cars are having original paint and a paper trail to trace the history of the car, which includes the Window Sticker.

The February issue of CAR CRAFT magazine has an article called “Midnight Drags 2015.” This event is a heads up shoot out that starts at the end of the Car Craft Summer Nationals.

Jim Schmittinger entered two cars. One was a 1987 Buick Grand National and, if that wasn’t up to the task, he also entered a 2015 Hellcat. The Grand National made it to the final run with a string of low 10-second runs. Obviously it was modified.

Taking First Place was Chris Bishir, a technician for Lingenfelter Engineering. He entered his S-10 truck. He clicked off a 9.07 at 153 mph. Jim took Second Place with his modified 1987 Grand National.

It’s great to see our cars getting “ink” in the car magazines.

Over the year, we have tried several business ventures.

It was 30-something years ago that I tried my hand at selling Christmas trees. I bought our first tow truck from a nearby Atlantic gas station and he had sold Christmas trees for a number of years. (Our first tow truck had a hand winch set up!)

I thought since our house was located on a major busy four-lane highway, it may be a worthwhile venture to sell trees. Boy was I wrong. First, you have to buy an entire truck load of trees. You can’t simply pick out the trees you want. Unlike cars that increase in value as they age, Christmas trees drop in value the closer December 25th rolls around! Add in the fact your friends expect a special price, and you can see how selling cut Christmas trees becomes a work of charity!

Besides people coming all hours of the night, net profit margins were not that great.

I think the end result was we basically broke even. I did come away with the knowledge that I would never sell cut Christmas trees again.

You may not be aware of the name Art Fitzpatrick, but his work is well known in the automotive advertising segment. During his long lifetime, he and his partner Van Kaufman (who at one time was a Disney animator whose specialty was drawing people and places) created over 280 ads for Pontiac alone.

Art was 96 years young. Together they did work for 14 different automakers. I had the opportunity of meeting Art Fitzpatrick at a Pontiac GTO convention several years ago. He was one of the VIPs set up next to my spot at the event. His work is even more impressive when you realize everything back then was done by hand with no computer help!

A special thanks to Clem Sousa for providing the link.

Another one of our previous Turbo Regals is now up for sale, a 1986 T-Type. I originally sold this car back in 2001.

Ironically I bought this car only about 15 minutes from our home from an owner that had never heard of us.

It is a black 1986 T-Type, a color you don’t often see on a T-Type. It still retains the factory original paint and was also signed by Molly at one of our events. The owner has only driven the car about 25,000 miles since he purchased it. It now has 76,890 miles on it.

Here are the details from his ad -

A good customer of ours has a set of original GNX wheels for sale. This is a matched set of 4 ORIGINAL wheels. The price for the full set is $5,000. Email me personally - [email protected] - for more details.

We have 1 unique item now in the works. It’s being produced by Spoolfool exclusively for our company.

We have also been in conversation with another company about something that we hope to be able to make happen. Both of these projects will work with any year Turbo Regal.

Watch for updates.

We had our son Darrell make up a sample bracket and template so these new power antennas will bolt into the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals, like the originals.

He installed one in a Grand National that he had painted, and it used this new bracket.

These new power antennas have a manufacturer’s One-year Warranty.

Antennas are actually made for another GM car. They use the same screw-in bezel that sits on the top of the fender, so you can use the original bezel. The 3-wire lead and plug is identical to the original. The new bracket will be bolted to the new antenna. A rubber boot will also come with this new power antenna to protect the motor from the elements.

We expect to have these new power antennas ready to ship before the end of November. If you place your order in advance now, the sale price is $179.95 plus $12 shipping. The retail price once they are available will be $199.95 plus shipping. We would not charge your credit card until we are able to ship the power antenna to you.

This power antenna is not on our website, so you have to call and talk to Christina to get on the list if you want one - 215-766-1611 x 0. By ordering now you save $20. This also gives us a good idea on how many power antennas we need to have initially. We should have production of these shortly.

For the first time in years, we now have Rebuilt Powermaster Brake Units in stock, Part #7021. Units are always in demand, so if you need one, call our office 215-766-1611 x 0.

Here is a link to the Powermaster on our website:

We just got in 2 of these TR-6 High Tech Ignition Systems from Bob Bailey, our part #7442 TR-6 High Tech Ignition System or #7443 TR-6 High Tech Ignition System and Custom-Cut High-Performance Grey Plug Wires.

Here is a link to these parts on our website:

Currently we are overstocked with our fiberglass front and rear bumpers. Part #1507 is the front bumper and #1532 is the rear bumper. The retail is normally $190 each. However, if you purchase both the front and rear at the same time, your cost would be $365. You would save $15 by purchasing both. These are for off road use only.

Here is the information on our credits for cores.

We currently need original good 1986-1987 AC Delco mass air flow sensors. We allow $25 credit for each core that can be rebuilt. Credit will not be issued until we get your unit back from Cardone showing it was able to be rebuilt. Recent cores have shown that some of them are simply not able to be rebuilt any more.

TURBO CORES must be the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal stock ones. They must be complete. We will issue you a $100 Letter of Credit for each acceptable core.

If you ship to us, the post office is the cheapest method. Pack the item(s) with a note with your name, address and phone number

From time to time, whenever we spot an unusual or an exceptional car or truck for sale, or one we have for sale, we will put a blurb in our weekly Inner Circle. Also, any cars that our customers have for sale will be featured here and you can see their car with photos on our website. In this category, we will run the descriptions for two-to-three weeks and, if there is no interest in that particular vehicle, it will be deleted the following week. Any new vehicles that we add will appear first, so the oldest listing would be at the end of this section.

If any of these vehicles perk your interest, email me personally - [email protected] - for more information and photos.

If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]

1982-1987 Buick Regal -

This is an OEM front bumper impact cushion. This is the first part of the bumper to get hit in any minor accident. You simply remove the bumper to replace this rubber strip. This is 100% identical to the original one.

NOTE - This front bumper impact cushion is black, which is correct for all Grand Nationals and GNX models and is exactly like the original.

For other Turbo models you may want to add the painted strip in the indention to be original.

Each comes with a pack of 25 thread cutting nuts. These are the unique nuts needed to secure the impact cushion to the metal bumper. We also offer this pack of nuts separately, Part #7451.

Our photo shows this front impact cushion at the top. We’ve noted the placement on the front bumper with a red arrow in the middle photo. The inset photo shows the 25 thread cutting nuts, which comes with it.

NOTE - We also offer the Reproduction REAR Bumper Impact Cushion, Part #7450.

Another great exterior restoration item.

Here is an inexpensive kit that includes everything you need when you replace the rear brake shoes.
This kit has everything you need for both rear brake drums.

In many cases, due to age you may break some of the springs when you go to remove them to replace the brake shoes.

This kit will virtually fit any GM car that has rear drum brakes, including all the Buick Turbo Regals.

1984-1987 G-Body (Including Buick Turbo Regal - except for GNX wheels) -

More and more Turbo Regal owners are starting to restore their cars, since the values of original Turbo Regals is on the increase.

One visible small part is the unique style grey valve stem caps that were used on all the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals, except for the GNX.

These are the correct looking valve stem caps for the T wheels and the Grand National wheels. These are not correct for the GNX wheels.

If you have an original spare tire in your trunk, you can check that valve stem cap and the design will look identical to the caps pictured here.

These are the correct style. We did however had to paint them grey to match the original color.

Each car uses 4 valve stem caps for the wheels and 1 for the spare. Our set includes 10 caps, which gives you 2 full sets.

An excellent replacement item for any exterior restoration.

7700 - 1984-1987 G-Body (Including Buick Turbo Regal - except for GNX wheels) –
Correct Looking Gray Valve Stem Caps (10) Set - $46.95

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -

Over a period of time, the original manifold air temperature sensor may fail to read accurately, due to age or dirt.

This manifold air temperature sensor gives the computer a reading of the air temperature as it enters the turbocharger. The sensor is capable of reading between -40 and 266F. This is the sensor that mounts in the factory elbow off the air cleaner assembly.

These are the hoses that connect the vacuum lines to the vacuum block.

It takes 3 different sizes of the vacuum hoses to complete the set.

If you are buying either of our reproduction new billet vacuum blocks, it’s best to replace the 5 rubber hoses, since the originals may be cracked. Hoses may also split when you attempt to remove them.

Because the material is inexpensive, we only offer a set of 2 complete sets (10 hoses), so you will have a spare set.

NOTE - You may also be interested in these related parts - #6796 Stock Vacuum Block or #6797 Vacuum Block with extra vacuum fitting for vacuum brakes.

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
