9-23-09 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 09-23-2009

Over the last several Inner Circle Emails we have been covering various documents you could have with your car and various decals that would have appeared on your Turbo Regal when it arrived at the Buick dealership prior to the first owner taking ownership.

PHOTO 1 - Recently, we had a 1985 Grand National with over 85,000 miles. Once we removed the wheels, I was amazed to see that the rear drums had never been off the car! I knew this because both drums still had the one-way clips that GM put on 1-2 of the wheel studs. Even more amazing is that the paper decals (which probably indicated to the GM worker which drums to use) were still intact! This is on a car that is now over 24-25 years old. This can be seen in Photo 1.

Also, this car obviously came from a state that did not require any kind of brake inspections since the one-way clips on the rear drums were still intact. Our state, Pennsylvania, and probably others as well have a yearly state inspection where they have to remove at least one drum from one side or a wheel for disc brakes in order to inspect the brake shoes to determine if they have enough material left to be road worthy.

PHOTO 2 - Another decal we have seen over the years on certain 1984 and 1985 Turbo Regals only is a pale yellow round decal that would be affixed to the inside of the actual trunk lid. It simply read "Deck Lid Fit By," then it would have some sort of inspection under it. Going by memory, this was a fairly large circle decal, maybe 2 inches in diameter. This decal can be seen in Photo 2 on the inside of a Grand National trunk lid.

PHOTO 3 - While on the subject of gathering original documents and records, etc, we used to market a line of binders. In the mid 1990s we sold nice three-ring vinyl black binders that could be used to store related documentation. We did a binder specifically for the T-Type, Grand National, and the GNX. At the time, they had a retail price of $21.95 each.

They have been discontinued for many years. At the time we also wholesaled them to Poston Enterprises. As you are probably aware, Poston Enterprises has closed up shop. In a recent deal we made with a third party, we bought the remaining T-Type 3-ring Collection Black Binders from their inventory. Unfortunately, these do not have the inside page dividers. (If you receive the emailed Inner Circle, see the Rare Parts section.)

We show this binder as Photo 3 along with the Grand National 3-ring Collection Black Binder from my personal collection. Unfortunately, I do not have a GNX 3-ring binder in my collection. The T-Type binder has the saying, "A BOOST OF BUICK PERFORMANCE." The Grand National Binder has the saying, "B-B-B-BAD TO THE BONE." The GNX one was identical the GNX license plate we used to sell. It read "GNX - A HIGH PERFORMANCE INVESTMENT FOR THE FORTUNATE 547."

Granted, in the Turbo Buick world, there was never a wealth of related items available for our cars compared to Corvette or the Pontiac GTO. But, enough different items exist to make the hunt interesting. Obviously, there are more GM and aftermarket related items based on the Grand National than the GNX or the T-Type/Turbo-T models. Enjoy the hunt; either on ebay, at the various swap meets, or car show events. You never know what will turn up.

We are now offering a slightly different Grand National Banner. The size and material is slightly different from the last one we carried. It is GM licensed and we are able to lower the price.

This high-quality vinyl banner is GM licensed and measures 24" tall by 48" wide. The banner has metal eyelets on all the corners and in the middle, for added strength.

This GRAND NATIONAL design features the "Turbo Six" logo in red and orange, outlined in grey. The words "GRAND NATIONAL" and "INTERCOOLED" are grey on a high-quality black vinyl banner.

It's just one of several distinctive banners we offer. Ideal to hang in any garage or workshop.
These banners make an excellent gift for any Buick enthusiast or mechanic. Ideal to hang in any garage or workshop or with a car show display.

1984-1987 Grand National and GNX -

This unique custom-made center armrest cushion solves the problem of where to rest your right arm while driving.

It is made by the same company that made them originally in the early 1990s.

A solid high-density block of foam is used for the inside. Then it's covered and sewn using original grey and black Pallex material, which is the same material GM used in the original bucket seats.

The format of the pleats on the top surface of this armrest cushion matches the pleats in the original design on the bucket seats. The cushion simply sits on top of the console lid and wedges in between the bucket seats holding it in position. Each side of the cushion has a slotted pocket to store small items. Cushion measures is 6" high x 8-1/2" wide x 17" long.

The end result is a custom addition that looks 100% original in your Grand National or GNX and one that is very useful!

Check out our web site (Photo #1 shows the center armrest cushion. Photo #2 shows it from the driver's side, and #3 from the passenger's side.)

Another excellent addition to a Grand National or GNX interior.

If you have a 1984-1987 Turbo Regal with the standard analog dash, you know in the bottom left corner of the dash it says, "LOW FUEL."

This was a Riviera option, which shares our same dash. It was never offered on the Turbo Regals but could be made to function by simply installing the special light socket that had the printed circuit board on the back. The same local source that made our new L.E.D. dash light setup now has a functional low fuel warning in the works. It will light up in the dash when you are low on fuel. It will even go one step further...when your fuel tank is very low, it will flash. The technology today has come a long way since 1984-1987, so this one will include a new light socket and have a small circuit board with prongs that will connect to the backside of the gas gauge.

Installation will be very easy, and will only require you to pull your dash cluster out a short distance on the left side to do the installation. Watch for an introductory price later this month!

This would be a great time to step up to the new L.E.D. dash lights as well, since the install is about the same for both items.

Again, both of these are ONLY for the standard analog-style dash cluster. We are real close to having this available. Expect to have parts and price structure on this neat upgrade next week.

7221 - 1985-1987 Grand National - Reproduction Gray Upper Door Panels(s) are not longer available.

Two of our customers are selling their cars. Here is information on a new listing that will also appear on the web site.

FOR SALE - 1987 Grand National hardtop with under 90,000 miles. This car is local to our shop. I just saw this Grand National 3 weeks ago. The trunk ID label has been signed by Molly, while it was at one of our events.

Car has many of our parts on it, such as the braces and all-new radiator hoses. Oil has been changed every 3,000 miles. Has a new stainless exhaust system. Upgrades include 30 lb boost gauge, Scanmaster, and Walbro 370 fuel pump. Must sell as her mechanic has left the area and she cannot give it the attention the car needs to maintain it. Contact Sallie at 215-766-7818. She is asking $11,500 or B.O.

Click Here to see this Car for Sale page on our web site.

FOR SALE - 1986 Grand National. Locally, to us (about 10 miles away), a good customer of ours is selling his 1986 Grand National. Tom is having health issues and needs to sell his pride and joy. The Grand National on the outside looks identical to a real GNX, with the flares, louvers, emblems and wheels. (My son Darrell actually painted and installed the flares for him).

The body was taken down to bare metal and painted several years ago prior to Tom buying the car. The interior is quite nice. The engine compartment needs detailing. For more info, contact Tom Altmose directly at 610-253-8659. He is asking $14,900 or best offer. I recently have seen the car personally. It does have some minor modifications under the hood, like a cold air system.

NOTE - If you know of a GM or Buick Turbo event, let us know and we can post it in our weekly Turbo Regal Inner Circle so our members are aware of the event.

Although not a Turbo Buick related car show event, this one local to us event deserves a special mention. The date is Sunday, October 18th, 2009 from 9 am until 3:30. Location is the Warminster Community Park, which is now part of the old closed down Johnsville Airbase. This is where we held several of our major Car Shows events in the early 1990s.

What makes this show remarkable are several things. It is hosted by the Early Ford V8 Club and this is the 40th year of this show. That means they did their first one back in 1969!

Another unique thing related to judging is none of their club members are eligible to win! They have Awards of Excellence for the Top 80 entries!

Frankly, I think it is nothing short of remarkable that they have conducted a car show now for forty years and over that time have made whatever adjustments they needed to do to keep it going. Since this event is in my area, I know it has been held in different locations over the years. Not that many years ago it was held in Warrington on the grounds of the one of the last drive-in movie theatres, which is now a location for Lowes and Target stores.

The event happens rain or shine, but we all know any type of bad weather hurts attendance.

For more info, contact John Murphy 215-674-6700 days or 267-716-555 nights/weekends.

Since it is early V8 Ford sponsored, maybe I will see a 1949-1950 Ford business coupe for sale. That's the one reason I usually go! Also, represents one of the last car show events in our area of the season.

If you do go, the entrance to this event is off Bristol Road by Hatboro Road, which is behind the old airbase! Weather permitting this event is well worth attending, especially if you reside in a 50-mile radius.

Looking further ahead, November 7th and 8th we will be in Ocala, Florida at Don Garlits' 22nd Annual Mopar event. We'll be one of his special guests as a vendor selling ZDDPlus™ and the ZPaste™. We plan to contact the local Buick club and several of the Pontiac/GTO clubs in Florida to arrange a seminar in that general area at that time. Watch for more updates as the time draws closer. We hope to see many of our Florida customers at that time.
