Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 04-28-2021 -

This Spring contest proved to be very popular as we had the most responses in recent memory. Probably due in part that the top prize was one of the brand new gear driven mini starters. We actually awarded a 3rd place winner because his guess was just 2 over the actual count!

Taking the top prize was Paul Byrne from Michigan. His guess was 278. Actual M&M count was 285. Paul has been a customer of ours since 2018 when he bought his first Grand National from a Harley cycle place who took a 15,000 mile Grand National in on trade. Paul hails from Michigan. He says he seldom wins an argument and never a contest! Congrats to Paul for taking the top prize. Perhaps Paul will showcase the VW bus when he shows his pristine low mileage Grand National.

Taking second prize with a guess of 266 was Gordon Komesu who hails from the great state of Hawaii. Gordon can’t recall how long he has been a subscriber but it has been for several years. Congrats to Gordon for taking 2nd place prize.

Our third winner because of his guess of 287 which was 2 over the actual count was Rich May out of Virginia. Rich says he was guessing about 50 m&ms per window and then picked 87 to round off the count due to the fact 87 was the last year for the Turbo Regal. He has been a customer of ours for about 8 years and owns a WE4 Turbo Regal. Congrats to Rich for his unusual guess.

We have shipped each winner their prizes. I was surprised at how many had guesses of 500 or more.

Penn State or as I refer to it, “State Penn.” It has been an amazing journey for our one and only granddaughter who has proven to be super smart. She graduates May 7th with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Science with a minor in Engineering Mechanics! She is also a scholar in the Schreyer Honors College. Her degree is a combination of mechanical, electrical, and industrial engineering. She has interned at Lockhead Martin, Mack Trucks, and Ford Motor Company. We couldn’t be more proud of her hard work and impressive achievements.

She researched and completed her thesis, “The Study of Women’s Perceptions of Performance and Experience in All-Female and Mixed-Gender Engineering Teams.”

She has already secured a job starting in June as a quality engineer at W.L. Gore and Associates, also known as GORE in Elkton, Maryland. Gore is a global materials science and manufacturing company. They make innovative products for many industries including those in aerospace, automotive, medical, pharmaceutical, and more. They are well known for their implantable medical devices, venting systems, and clothing including GORE-TEX. In 2020, Gore was named a Fortune 100 Best Company to Work For in the United States.

One of our long-time customers John Mulligan out of California still remembers getting for us 2 of the Barbie doll Lamborghini motorized cars before she was even born!

So, if you reside in Delaware or eastern part of Maryland and ever see a silver Camaro SS convertible this summer and the license plate reads “KIRBAN” - that is our granddaughter!

Devyn has always been interested in cars. She can drive just about any car, truck, or boat along with a tow trailer.

She got to drive my white Turbo-T years ago and Darrell gave her a few lessons on mastering a manual shift by letting her drive my 1996 Ford Ranger pickup truck. The clutch still works perfect in my 1996 Ford Ranger. She’s not familiar with hand crank windows!

PHOTO 1 - The top left photo shows Devyn with her two cars in front of the Penn State stadium. The top right photo shows her in her graduation cap and Schreyer Honors College medal. The lower left shows her with one of the Lamborghini replicars Darrell has built. The lower right photo shows Devyn alongside a Mini Cooper we bought as a test car when they first came out. We used to make parts for those cars when they were popular. Devyn was probably about 5 or 6 in this photo.

The owner passed away last month so we are selling this Grand National for his wife. This is one of the few that escaped Buick with a very good paint job. Car has no dents or scratches of any concern at all. Car is well optioned. Power driver's seat, T-tops, door edge guards, power trunk release, power windows, power door locks, tilt, cruise, delay wipers, concert sound II, non working power antenna, rear defogger, lighted visor mirror and posi rear. All the weatherstrips are like new. The doors shut like they did on day one!

Upgrades and modifications etc: Original exhaust still intact and no leaks, gas tank appears brand new, tires brand new Eagle GT 11. Spare and jack never ever disturbed! Not smoked in. Garaged never saw the rain. No flaws or fading or dents or scratches in the factory paint. Drives like a 27,500 mile car solid and tight no rattles. Shifts nice and crisp. Modifications: Aftermarket am/fm radio CD player. Injectors have been changed, and have an open K & N 9 inch filter with stock mass air flow sensor. My grey spark plug wires. Also Caspers fuel feeder kit is installed. Kenne Bell adjustable fuel regulator and hood mounted Kenne Bell fuel gauge. A pillar VDO boost gauge and console twin oil and water VDO gauges.

Note these aftermarket additions appear to have been added very recently. Interior shows no fading or rips anywhere. Still has a new car smell. Few minor bubbles in the headliner. Front and rear fillers are not cracked but get that chalky appearance from age. All the stock wheels still look quite good. We are seeking $38,900 OBO for this extremely nice example. Car is very dry underneath. A well optioned survivor. The few modifications that have been made can easily be removed and sold to return to stock. For more information and photos email me direct [email protected] Remember JJ Best has financed a number of these cars that I have represented with very little down payment. Also buyer gets a 20% discount for the first 30 days from Kirban Performance. I currently have a substantial deposit on this Grand National. However I have a lead on 100% restored 8,000 mile Grand National with the factory astroroof that may be coming up for sale. This car would be close to the 50 grand price.

PHOTO 2 - We show 4 views of this original 27,500 mile 1987 Grand National. Again for more detailed photos email me personally [email protected] I do have photos of the undercarriage since I have a lift at my house.

I recently came across these photos. This was around the mid 1990s when I had the 3rd test car, the dark blue 1987 Turbo-T. This was after Darrell painted it as a gift for me. We had a customer stop from the New England area who had a huge Prevost bus. Funny story about Prevost buses. In the late 1980s Darrell had a customer stop in with a Prevost bus and wanted to hire him to polish the entire bus. When Darrell came home that night and told us the story I asked him what was the owner's name? He said Bill Campbell. Darrell had no idea who Bill Campbell was until I told him he was the co-founder of Hurst in the 1960s and worked on the original Jaws of Life project! Later he and 2 or 3 of his business partners would go to Canada and purchase the Prevost bus company. In the 1990s they later sold the company.

PHOTO 3 - The top left shows Eileen and myself at our old Sugarbottom Road address. In the background is my 1987 Turbo-T and the Prevost bus this Buick customer was driving. The top right shows not only the Prevost bus and my 1987 Turbo T but Darrell alongside his personal blue Lamborghini kit car he built years earlier. The bottom left shows one of the Bad to the Bone fender covers we had reproduced years ago. This fender cover was quite popular! The bottom right shows the 1967 VW bus when I first bought it to use for outgoing UPS orders. One can only imagine what that VW bus would bring in today's marketplace! It would take a lot of M&Ms to fill it! It actually ran when I bought it. Probably gave like $350 for it.

These two pocket size books are available from Amazon. They cost $5.62 for volume 1 and $6.88 for volume 2. Each book runs about 100 pages. Here are just some of the unusual facts. In the original Ford Pinto ads Ford had to remove the tag line “Pinto leaves you with that warm feeling.” Due to a high volume of accidents if rear ended the Pinto would burst into flames! The Sunbeam Alpine had a 4 cylinder engine. However to drop in the Ford V8 they had a burly man on production step into the engine bay and bash the inner fenders with a hammer for enough clearance! The new Cadillac Escalades come with 22 inch wheels. Due to their size they don’t fit on the transport. So they have steel wheels which are removed and returned to Cadillac to be reused prior to delivery. The 6.2 litre, 797 horsepower Dodge Challenger Hellcat Red Eye has an eco mode! It also provides a list of the 10 name plates that had a very short life span. The Buick Reatta was one of them made just from 1988 the run ended in 1991.

PHOTO 4 - We show both Boring Car Trivia books Volume 1 and Volume 2.

We just found out the other day that Cardone is discontinuing the aluminum 10 and 12 bolt drums. Already they have sold out of the 12 bolt aluminum drums. I purchased the last few remaining 10 bolt drum sets. You must call Christina at 215-766-1611 if you want to purchase one of the fewer than 5 sets left in the system. The price is $299.95 for a pair. The price includes shipping to the basic 48 states. You may find them elsewhere cheaper, but it's best to call any other source as well as they may not be aware Cardone has no inventory. Our part number is #7716. I have no idea why they discontinued them. The quality of the product is excellent. When checking prices note most companies market them per drum they don’t picture or price them as a pair (2). This makes no sense to me. Nobody buys a single aluminum drum!

My source who has been building alternators for over 35 years has exhausted all his contacts for finding new correct silver cad plated fans and pulleys. All the fans and pulleys being produced today for alternators have a gold like cad finish on the fan and pulley. This is 100% wrong for any 1986-1987 Turbo Regal. With the alternator being so visible on the top of the engine you want to avoid this. Or, purchase #7924 which is our kit which includes a silver cad plated fan, correct reproduction of the pulley powder coated glossy black, with spacer, nut, and lock washer. By purchasing this kit you can easily convert any incorrect gold cad fan and pulley to the proper silver cad and black glossy powder coated pulley. Or, ideally to avoid those issues simply buy either #7315 the 120 amp alternator for $209.95 or the #7316 the 200 amp for $315.95. Our alternators already have the proper parts on them. Again it appears every supplier has switched to the gold cad finish for the fan and pulley. The pulley should be black and the fan should be silver cad.

Remember the value lies with keeping your car as stock appearing as possible. We saw this coming and had the correct pulley made in advance and then had them powder coated which holds up far better than paint does. My supplier just gave me 100 gold fans to get the silver cad treatment so we don’t have any supply issues going forward. Alternators are never a problem for us as my supplier lives about 20 minutes from my location. Each one is bench tested and comes with a 1 year warranty.

I think electric cars are going to slowly be the demise of the collective gas powered car market. A friend of mine purchased a used Smart Car. The battery needed to be removed and refreshed. The cost to refresh the Smart car battery runs just over $500. You think changing a power antenna in a GNX is a major project, try removing a battery from a Smart Car. First it weighs 420 lbs of dead weight. So already you are at a disadvantage no matter how strong your other two friends may be. It gets removed from the bottom of the car. This is just one example of the weight of a battery for an electric car. The overall weight of a typical electric smart car is under 2,000 lbs. So the battery accounts for 25% of the car's actual weight.

See last week's inner circle for photos and details. Or, simply email me [email protected] for more information. The camper is a tremendous value for being a 2019 model only used 3 times.

The supplier of our special color interior paints has just come out with two versions of the cast iron paint and one version of a spray paint that duplicates the stainless steel look. The cast iron is available in a low heat form that resists temperatures as high as 250 degrees. The other cast iron spray paint resists heat up to 1200 degrees. Both cast iron paints come in a 12 ounce spray can. The stainless steel paint comes in a 13 ounce spray can. All three paints are suitable for exterior or components on the engine or the engine compartment.

The part numbers are as follows: Part number #7950 is for the CAST IRON LOW HEAT spray paint. Part number #7951 is for the CAST IRON HIGH HEAT spray paint. Either version of cast iron spray paint depending on heat resistance is perfect for various engine parts. It also protects the parts against rust. Part number #7952 is for the STAINLESS STEEL spray paint. This paint provides maximum corrosion protection resistance. Also protects against sunlight, oil and water. The cans are all priced at $17.95 each. Note: We will not have our initial stock on these until next week. To order now you must call our office 215-766-1611 to place your order. These are NOT on our website as of yet. Be sure to specify the name and part number if you call and order.

Our goal is to add several new Turbo Regal parts each week to expand our product line. Coming soon a nice compact upgraded front brake set up that is a direct bolt on. A welcome upgrade to increase stopping ability no matter what brake system you have.

Be sure to check ebay every week or so as we post parts under both Kirban Performance and Kirban Enterprises. You never know what will be posted from us.

We will only post any new additions to avoid confusion. Refer to previous inner circle emails to see the entire list.

If you have an idea or tip or a product idea, send it to my email [email protected]

Remember all indications are the supply of silver cad alternator fan blades and pulleys has virtually been depleted as suppliers now only offer gold cad fans and pulleys. Both of which are 100% wrong for a correct restoration project on any 1986-1987 Turbo Regal. Our supply from our source for the original brand new 1986-1987 rear coil springs is almost depleted. There has been a slight price increase. Once these are gone there are no more that I am aware of.

If you are returning any cores or products, it is important that you send them to the correct address.

We discovered that FedEx will not forward any packages that are sent to the old PO Box or to our old address in Plumsteadville. Instead they deliver the packages to the old address and leave them outside or send them back to the shipper. They refuse to forward and say that we should notify the shipper. In most cases, we have no idea when we are getting packages shipped back to us.

If you have any cores that are being sent back to us, be sure to use the correct address, especially if you use FedEx. Otherwise, we may not receive your package or it may be sent back to you.

In order for our Inner Circle members to have an equal opportunity on the Rare Parts, no emails regarding orders on rare parts will be honored prior to 3 pm Wednesday. This way Inner Circle members get the opportunity first to purchase any of the rare items that may be pictured in the main body of the Inner Circle which may go on our website earlier in the day each week. Inner Circle members are the ONLY people that get to see the Rare Parts listing and see the prices.

Here is the information on our credits for cores.

STEERING WHEEL CORES. Currently we need good 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering cores. They must be straight and not have rusted spokes. We will issue a Letter of Credit of $100 for each acceptable core. You must email me [email protected] a photo first to make sure the steering wheel is acceptable.

POWERMASTER BRAKE UNITS. Currently, we are accepting powermaster brake units. We give a $150 Letter of Credit for each acceptable core. If you include the turbo pedal, add $10. You would receive a $160 Letter of Credit. To avoid having your core not accepted, you MUST first email me a photo of the core you plan to send in - [email protected] - We will NOT accept any cores that have severe rust issues or have been disassembled. Core must have the brake switch and brake bowl reservoir. Too many of the cores we have been getting are in such terrible shape they are worthless to us.

TURBO CORES must be the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal stock turbo. They must be complete. We will issue you a $175 Letter of Credit for each acceptable core. We need cores now.

If you ship to us, the post office is the cheapest method. Pack the item(s) with a note with your name, address and phone number.

Good news - We now accept Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.
Here are the options and the costs.

Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need to be specifically Turbo Regal related. It can be for something for sale or something wanted.

Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.

The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.

It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.
We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.

Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,500 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,400 potential buyers.

Ads submitted properly by the previous Sunday would appear that next Wednesday in the weekly Inner Circle. Ads must be submitted by email to - [email protected]

Payment by credit card must be done by phone to our office 215-766-1611.

If you are not able to see the Buick Rare Parts section at the end of this Inner Circle, it is because you are not an Inner Circle member, but instead are reading this on the website. You must subscribe to see the Rare Parts section each week. It would go directly to your inbox every Wednesday afternoon. It is FREE, probably one reason why nobody complains about what I write about. To subscribe simply email – [email protected] - to get our free weekly Inner Circle email.

The Buick Rare Parts section is only viewed by those that subscribe. Subscription is free, so complaints on what I write are nonexistent!

NOTE - If you email us and do NOT get a timely reply, be sure to check your “SPAM” folder. Some emails do not go through.

If you need to email us, use - [email protected]

If you need technical information, it’s best to email - [email protected] - rather than call us. We will do our best to answer any technical questions within 24 hours. Please remember I have very little knowledge of the mechanical workings of the engine.

A must for every Buick Turbo Regal buyer, seller, or enthusiast!

It is also a helpful book to have in your reference material, especially if you are considering buying a Turbo Regal or selling your Turbo Regal.

Some of the chapter titles are: Tips for First-time Buyers, Where to Look, Recommended Price Guides, What are the Buying Trends, What Photos to Request, Advantages to Buying Out-of-state, Records and Literature, Understanding the Various Labels, The Walk-around Inspection, The Body and Paint Factor, A Look at the Trunk Area, A Look at the Wheels and Tires, Checking the Undercarriage, The Engine Compartment, The Interior Inspection, The Test Drive, Inspection in Photo Review, and Car Ad Terminology.

This plastic power steering reservoir has been reproduced exactly like the original. It is unique for only the 1986 and 1987 Buick Turbo Regals. The lettering on the cap is hand-painted in white.

Originals are prone to cracking or the inlet and outlet orifice can easily get broken.

Very few sources sell it with the hand-painted lettering on the white cap, as shown in the photos.

This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me directly - [email protected] - and I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
