4-14-10 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 04-14-10

Here is the link to this Inner Circle on the web site -

In review, we have covered the high points of the of the Buick T-Type models which was first introduced in 1983 (with the lone exception being an earlier T-Type Riviera model.) You also learned that Buick mixed things up during the 1980s by not having any consistency with the T-Type option. Some models offered the T-Type option one year and not the next.

I recently came across a Buick News Release dated September 3, 1986. It has to do with the new 1987 models and explains the Touring Options, Performance Packages, Interior and Exterior Sport Packages.

In 1987, the T-Type models were only offered in the Riviera, Electra, and LeSabre car lines. Buick also introduce a T package, which included Gran Touring Suspension, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, T emblems on the fenders, and Eagle GT tires mounted on aluminum rims. This would be available on the Turbo Regal model, which replaced the T Type model.

Buick separated the Exterior and Interior Packages, so they could be ordered individually from the total T or T-Type package. In other words on the exterior package you could have a black-out trim or "black accents," as Buick called them. But it was not something that was automatic with the T or T-Type package on the various Buick models. This explains, in part, how you could order a 1987 Turbo-T and not have all black accent trim.

The only other model in 1987 to get a turbo option was the Skyhawk. With so many variations offered in 1987, you can see how confusing it would be for potential customers to choose and decide what options they wanted to order.

The end result after 20 years, outside of the 1987 Turbo-T Regal, you seldom ever see a T-Type or T package Century, Skyhawk, Skylark, Somerset, Electra or Riviera.

On a closing note, I personally own a real nice 1997 supercharged 3800 Riviera. Even though it is 10 years newer than what we covered, they are seldom seen today and seldom as nice as the one example I own.

Motor Trend magazine August 1982 did a 5-page article on the new 1983 T-Type Buick models. I have a copy of their Reprint artitcle.

PHOTO 1 - Shows the Motor Trend Reprint article on the 5 new T-Type Buick models. Their subtitle reads, "In this case the T stands for Transition."

They basically showed the same Buick factory photos in this article that we have shown from the Buick brochures in previous Inner Circles. I'm not sure why they picked the Century T-Type for the cover rather than the T-Type Regal. Keep in mind, in the early 1980s the performance factor related to American cars was at a low ebb!

We will cover a new Buick topic next week!

UPDATE ON MOLLY - 04-09-2010

Since we have not heard personally from Molly for a while and people keep asking us for an update, Eileen called out and talked to his wife Terry on Friday (04-09-2010).

Molly has completed 4 rounds on radiation and several rounds of chemo. Because of a bad reaction, he still has one more round of chemo to go. The treatment is aggressive and he's lost 50 pounds. At this point they are trying to manage his pain with 3 different medications.

Unfortunately, he has also suffered a series of strokes, which have left him with some vision and vocabulary problems. He is not able to read or respond to emails. He sometimes cannot get his thoughts out properly and they sometimes laugh at the new words he makes up.

His medical team will re-evaluate him in 4 more weeks with an MRI.

Molly, Terry and Brooke want our readers to know how much they appreciate the many cards they have received. He fondly remembers the good times he had at the several Turbo Buick events we've had him come to over the years. Terry says they read the cards over and over and he actually remembers certain names and specific cars.

Most of our conversation was positive - Terry explained that Molly is in good spirits although in pain, "He's in it for the fight!"

She says he shows fabulous patience and the medical staff loves taking care of him because of his positive attitude, humor and personality.

"It's been totally sweet hearing from people across the miles. The notes and photos and kind thoughts have touched his heart."

They even heard from a women's prayer group in Texas that says a prayer for him every time they see a Lexus (remember, Molly designed the Lexus logo).

Even in the hardest situations, they are thankful for things. They continue to look for blessings everyday and want to say thanks to ALL who are sending their best wishes to them.

She was also touched that so many of our Buick people have included her and their 10-year old daughter Brooke in their notes.

Please take time and drop them a note. I know many of you may want to give them words of encouragement, so here is the mailing address.

We plan to have a special photo taken at our Open House this coming Saturday to send to Molly as well.

KIRBAN OPEN HOUSE - This coming Saturday April 17th - 9 am - 3 p.m. Rain or shine!

GREAT NEWS - Here are some of our confirmed vendors at our Open House.

Be SURE to contact any of the vendors now if you want them to bring something specific for you.

Richard Clark plans to be here. Our good friend Jason Maxfield will be here from Canada.

This is a great time to bring any used parts that you do not need to trade or cash in for items you want.

Besides a wide array of used parts we will have for sale we will have some of the books my Dad has written available at great prices also.

This is the perfect time to bring us cores to trade in for Letters of Credit. Currently we really need factory GM 1986-1987 mass air flow sensors (worth $25 each), powermaster brake cores (worth $75 each), and factory 1986-1987 Turbo cores (worth $75 each). This saves you shipping costs to turn them in for items you want. We will take as many as you bring us.

We will have several big items available that we can't ship.

ZDDPlus™ will be on sale if you buy 4 bottles or more.

Weather permitting, a good friend of mine is bringing a top-notch 1970 4-Speed Stage 1 Buick fully documented and it's for sale.

Pete Hoffman and I will have many tagged and bagged items for sale.

Free Coffee and donuts while they last in the morning. We will also have a Bake Sale to raise money for the Walk for Cancer that Carrie is doing later this fall.

We will have the new autographed Linda Vaughn "Miss Hurst" project available, as well as several other unique items.

Be sure to place your orders now, so we can have what you want on hand.

Here is a link to the KIRBAN OPEN HOUSE information on our web site:

I have three very extremely rare items for sale. Of these two items, only 2 exist and that's all that will ever exist. The other item, only 4 exist and no others will ever exist. They are brand new. Don personally signed them and I have photos to go with them. They are not cheap.

They are off his 001 Challenger Drag Pak car, which is valued at over $75,000.

If you are interested, email me - direct [email protected] - for further details and prices. We may have one on display at our Open House.

Here is a link to the GNX Exhaust System on our web site -

NOTE - We currently stock the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal - PYPES PERFORMANCE (Non-Polished Stainless) DUAL EXHAUST SYSTEMS

Here is a link to the Pypes Dual Exhaust System on our web site -

We have several of the Pypes exhaust systems in stock for immediate delivery.

One of the parts in the works for late spring delivery is the factory-style HEADERS for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. We expect to also have the driver's side alone available as well. They will be made from 409 stainless. As delivery time draws closer, we will have a special introductory price to determine initial sales response. We have recently been informed that the mounting flange will be changed to accept the various style cylinder heads.

Watch for updates on this project.

Got any Turbo parts you are not using? Why not cash them in for parts you need with a Letter of Credit. Simply email me a list - [email protected] -

Also we are still buying dead or partially dead 1984-1987 Turbo Regals under $4,000 that are within 250 to 350 miles of our location.

It appears that the GM supply of the factory 1986-1987 GM factory original molded boost line kits are dwindling and may already have disappeared from GM's warehouses inventory. We currently have a decent supply of them.

This is a very critical part, for any 1986-1987 Turbo Regal, since it is needed to control boost. They have 3 specially formed hoses with a special size diameter T in between two of the molded hoses. These also have the GM wording on them.

Over a period of time, heat can cause the hoses to swell and crack. While they last, we have them available for $44.95 plus shipping, Part #6644. Supplies are limited.

Here is a link to the Boost Line Kit on our web site -

We have probably the last 2 factory astroroof seals from GM in stock. The price is $179.95 each plus shipping. You MUST call the office, if you want to own one of these factory astroroof seals.

We have the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal - GM Air Flow Duct (from turbo to MAF sensor), Part #6536 in stock for $61.95. Just a few left now.

We still have a few brand new GM right hand side marker lights with the blackout package. This is the marker light that attaches to the side of the headlight bezels. Price is $61.95 plus shipping.

If you are interested in any of these parts, you must call our office to purchase it. Some of these close out items are just about gone from the GM parts system.

I have a unique pen holder for my desk. We had a tear-drop style shifter knob made for another car model few years ago. Our supplier went out of business, so we got the left overs. They are incomplete knobs made from #6061 billet aluminum and polished to a very high luster. They are about 3 inches tall and will hold any standard size pen in the opening. These make a unique single pen holder for your desk.

We have less than 20 of them. If you are looking for a unique item for your office desk, they are just $25 for 2. Shipping can be combined with any other purchase at the same time.

If you would like to see a photo, email your request to - [email protected]

If you would like to order these, just call our office - 215-766-1611.

NOTE - If you know of a GM or Buick Turbo event for this year, let us know and we can post it in our weekly Turbo Regal Inner Circle so our members are aware of the event.

The best way to stay informed with the show season is to check out the various Turbo Buick forums.

30th ANNUAL GS NATIONALS - May 11th thru 15th, 2010 - Beech Bend Raceway, Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Confirmed, as a special guest is noted drag racer "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, voted NHRA Top Driver from 1951-2000 Don Garlits, courtesy of ZDDPlus™. He will be at our Kirban Performance space.

Don has informed me he is planning to bring his Challenger Drag Pak car. He received the very first one from Dodge. Currently in the quarter mile he has run in the ten-second range.

Also confirmed returning this year is the 6-second Turbo Buick of John Gallina. Kenny Duttweiler and his crew are expected.

I have just been informed the ZR1 Corvette group has their event that same week in Bowling Green. They will be participating at some point during that week as guests at the racetrack. Assuming the ZR1 group includes the latest potent example, this is a rare chance to see one of the unique ZR1s that GM produced last year in very limited numbers.

NOTE - THANKS to those who have already contributed or plan to contribute to this great cause. We've heard from readers who have had Breast Cancer affect their immediate family. Thanks so much.

Our daughter-in-law Carrie has committed to a 60-mile, 3-day walk in October to raise money for Cancer research. Many of you have met her at our events. She needs to have $2300 raised by July 1st. If you would like to help with this fundraiser for a good cause, here is the information and a message from Carrie.

Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™ Walk - Carrie Kirban

I have taken on an incredible challenge. On October 15-17, 2010, I'll be walking 60 miles over the course of three days, camping out at night with thousands of other women and men taking this journey with me. I have committed to raise $2300 to be able to participate in the walk. The money I need to raise goes to cancer research and I pay for my expenses separately.

It's for an event called the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure™. Net proceeds from the Komen 3-Day for the Cure are invested in community-based breast health programs and breast cancer research.

You never know who this disease will strike next. My prayers go out to all of my friends and family that have been affected with this disease. Let's find a Cure! To make a donation, go to - The3Day.org - Click on Donate and search for my personal fundraising page under Carrie Kirban.

Thanks for the many notes and emails we've received concerning my dad and our memories. We really appreciate it! We never did email a second Inner Circle last week; things just got too busy. Below is what would have been in that second Inner Circle.

It's beyond belief how many boxes of photos/slides/8mm tapes my parents had accumulated over 60-plus years. If I had to guess, I think we have over 10,000 photos now stored at our house. There are over 30 boxes. We hope to eventually go through them and divide them up among the 5 kids.

Continuing my story from two weeks ago...

That summer (1964) after my run-away trip, I was off to summer school at a nearby school to take Chemistry for a second time.

Because I had my own car, it was easy to drive to summer school. Driving had another advantage - I was able to pick up a couple other kids that also had to take summer school classes and that paid for my gas. At the time, my school didn't offer summer school classes, so I gave rides to kids from my school as well as a girl from another local school.

This girl's father would later have an input in my life. He owned a junkyard!

By this time my one-year-old 1963 Ford was looking beat. I was constantly in debt. I was in a minor accident with my car and had bent one of the fenders.

Later that summer I approached my Dad about trading the car in and getting rid of my payments. I told him it would be a good idea for him to buy the next car for his business. I, in turn, would also buy a cheap used car for myself.

He agreed. My Ford got traded in on a new Opel Kadette station wagon. If my memory is correct, I believe those cars were sold at Buick dealerships back in the 1960s and early 1970s. The GT model Opel was often referred to as a "baby Corvette." Dad bought the station wagon version.

PHOTO 2 - Shows my sister Diane when she was about 5 or 6 along side the Opel Kadette station wagon.

I bought a 1954 Ford coupe to drive and I also used the Opel. So, around Christmas 1964 in 11th grade, my Dad makes a deal to sell one of his companies to a company in Sarasota, Florida. They were also to receive the Opel Kadette as part of the deal.

My Dad asked me if I would be willing to miss about 10 days of school and drive down to Florida to explain some of the company operation and deliver the car?

Really, what 17-year-old male would say no to a question like that? So, two days after Christmas I was off to sunny Florida. I even got to go to the Orange Bowl game on New Year's Day in Miami. All and all, it was a good experience and started my love of taking long trips.

In sifting though some of my parent's possessions, one thing stands out - My Dad truly loved my Mom and she loved him. They have been married for over 63 years. Our son Darrell and Carrie actually got married on my parent's 50th wedding anniversary - August 17th, 1996. My Mom currently is wheelchair bound and suffers memory problems, often confusing me with my brother or not knowing who I am sometimes. Fortunately, she was always a wonderful happy person and continues to be chipper even when confused.

In many boxes I have found a lot of evidence that shows their deep affection.

PHOTO 3 - The photo on the left shows my Mom and Dad when they were dating in about 1945. Dad was in the Navy. They had only met briefly prior to my Dad entering the Navy following his graduation from Girard College in Philadelphia, PA. Girard College is where my Dad and his older brother went from age 7 all through 12th grade. The photo on the right was taken at their 50th Wedding Anniversary dinner.

PHOTO 4 - I found this folder filled with letter and notes. There were also several napkins with handwritten notes to each other. Some of the letters are ones my Mom wrote my Dad who, along with me, traveled a lot during the 1970s and early 1980s. Since my father is an author of books on Bible prophecy and health, he would often go on speaking tours. We would be gone anywhere from 10 days to two weeks several times each year for speaking engagements in various Churches around the country. (That will be another story). He would speak and I would set up a book table to sell his books after the program.

This photo shows just a small handful of letters Mom wrote my Dad in the Navy in late 1944 and 1945. Also letters Dad wrote my Mom during that same time period. Many of the letters are only dated one day apart.

As of this week, my Dad is still under Hospice care at their home in Lancaster. He has tiny amounts of time where he is clear and makes sense, but most times he's difficult to understand. Fortunately, because of my Mom's memory loss, she does not realize he is no longer himself.

More stories of my youth to come.

Hope to see many of you this Saturday at our Open House!

Remember, it's rain or shine.
