RIP - Rollin "MOLLY" Sanders - July 15, 1943 - April 19, 2010 -

The automotive world has lost a great talent and friend - Rollin "MOLLY" Sanders. We are deeply saddened by the news that Molly lost his hard-fought courageous battle with cancer on Monday, April 19th.

The Memorial Service for Molly has now been arranged. It is scheduled for Friday, May 14, 2010 at 11 am at the Saddleback Church, 1 Saddleback Parkway, Lake Forest, CA 92630 with a reception to follow.

It would be great to have a local Buick club bring some Grand Nationals to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the "Molly Memorial Education Fund" has been established for their daughter Brooke, age 10. Contributions can be sent to: 2959 Country Club Drive, Costa Mesa, CA 92626.

One of the first major week-long events of the new season is the 32nd Spring Carlisle, held on 102 acres in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It is one of the largest automotive swap meets in the world, featuring the manufacturers midway (home to the top names in new parts dealers) and over 8,100 vending spaces filled with every automotive part, accessory and piece of memorabilia imaginable.

I have attended this amazing event almost every year since its start. I usually go on a Wednesday, to avoid the large crowds. I usually take my brother and we spend the day walking some of the 8,000+ vendor spaces. Almost every car imaginable can be found there for sale. I only spotted one Grand National for sale and I think it had only 13,000 miles on it.

Photo 2 - Shows two pictures I took at the Spring Carlisle event. The photo on the left shows a huge array of original company signs. Notice the individual Buick letters above the GMC Truck sign. Some of these signs fetch several hundred dollars or more, depending on their condition and age. The photo on the right shows a very nice layout of various gas station related items for sale, including a completely restored Sunoco gas pump from the 1960s. I think the price for the gas pump was several thousand dollars. More and more car collectors are buying items such as these to compliment their car collections in their garages.

1984-1987 Turbo Regal -

Made by TA Performance, these aluminum machined valve covers feature the Power Six logo and the word "BUICK" machined into the top of each valve cover.

These valve covers fit all stock 1984-1987 Turbo Regals 3.8 V6 engines. Covers are specifically designed to clear roller rockers and stock rockers on all stock and TA Performance cylinder heads, while providing plenty of clearance to the AC box on the passenger's side of the engine.

Kit comes with 8 new allen head bolts, 2 new grommets for the valve covers and 2 new K&N breathers.

When adding oil, you simply remove one of the K&N breathers on either valve cover.

NOTE - These valve covers will NOT fit 198 or 225 V6 engines or the Stage 2 Buick heads. In addition to fitting the stock heads, these will also fit the TA Performance cylinder heads.

NOTE - You would need to purchase a pair of valve cover gaskets (KPP #7060). These machined valve covers do have a lip to keep the valve cover gaskets in place.

An excellent upgrade to replace the plain aluminum valve covers on any 1984-1987 Turbo Regal.

When the Miata was first introduced, our company made aftermarket parts for them. We even had one and my wife drove it for a period of time. They seem to be a well-built car (similar to the VW) and the design stayed pretty much the same for several years.

A few years back, I remember the hot setup was dropping the 5.0 Mustang engine in a Miata. It was a neat package, and the cost was low to accomplish the change. Now a company has really upped the performance and offers a LS3 Corvette engine. It pumps in an extra 50 hp over the stock 430 hp. So, the end result is 480 hp in a car that weighs between 2350 and 2650 pounds. They use a Tremec T56 6-speed transmission. I assume the car retains the stock Miata rear, maybe with a few upgrades.

Perhaps more surprising is the fact that somehow they are able to shed 750 pounds over the stock drivetrain setup. They do this to any 1990 through 2005 Miata. The body is not altered in any fashion, making it one exciting sleeper.

I have no idea as to the costs involved, but I know from seeing used stock Miatas, the nice ones can be had for around $5,000. From what I've seen, it seems 80% of them are red!

I have three very extremely rare items for sale. Of these two items, only 2 exist and that's all that will ever exist. The other item, only 4 exist and no others will ever exist. They are brand new. Don personally signed them and I have photos to go with them. They are not cheap.

They are off his 001 Challenger Drag Pak car, which is valued at over $75,000.

One of the parts in the works for late spring delivery is the factory-style HEADERS for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. We expect to also have the driver's side alone available as well. They will be made from 409 stainless. As delivery time draws closer, we will have a special introductory price to determine initial sales response.

We have recently been informed that the mounting flange will be changed to accept the various style cylinder heads.

It appears that the GM supply of the factory 1986-1987 GM factory original molded boost line kits are dwindling and may already have disappeared from GM's warehouses inventory. We currently have a decent supply of them.

This is a very critical part, for any 1986-1987 Turbo Regal, since it is needed to control boost. They have 3 specially formed hoses with a special size diameter T in between two of the molded hoses. These also have the GM wording on them.

Over a period of time, heat can cause the hoses to swell and crack. While they last, we have them available for $44.95 plus shipping, Part #6644. Supplies are limited.

We have the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal - GM Air Flow Duct (from turbo to MAF sensor), Part #6536 in stock for $61.95. Just a few left now.

We still have a few brand new GM right hand side marker lights with the blackout package. This is the marker light that attaches to the side of the headlight bezels. Price is $61.95 plus shipping.

30th ANNUAL GS NATIONALS - May 11th thru 15th, 2010 - Beech Bend Raceway, Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Confirmed, as a special guest is noted drag racer "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, voted NHRA Top Driver from 1951-2000 Don Garlits, courtesy of ZDDPlus™. He will be at our Kirban Performance space.

Don has informed me he is planning to bring his Challenger Drag Pak car. He received the very first one from Dodge. Currently in the quarter mile he has run in the ten-second range.

Also confirmed returning this year is the 6-second Turbo Buick of John Gallina. Kenny Duttweiler and his crew are expected.

I have just been informed the ZR1 Corvette group has their event that same week in Bowling Green. They will be participating at some point during that week as guests at the racetrack. Assuming the ZR1 group includes the latest potent example, this is a rare chance to see one of the unique ZR1s that GM produced last year in very limited numbers.

This is the last week we will be posting our Rare Parts Listing until we return from the GS Nationals. This is because we will be taking many of these items (especially the Don Garlits items) to the GS Nationals.

Our rare parts listing will return to the emailed version of the Inner Circle the week of May 19th. So, with that in mind, be sure to look over this list carefully.


It was 1965... I was now a senior and could see the end of the road for my high school education and getting up at 7 am every day. During most of my senior year I worked at two different gas stations. This was back when a guy (attendant) would actually pump your gas and nothing was self-serve.

At this point, I had my 1950 Ford and 1956 Crown Victoria Ford. Life was good.

But I still had the strong itch for a Corvette.

Every Sunday our family would attend the Church of the Open Door, located just south of Broad and Olney in Philadelphia. My Mom originally started going there in her youth and my parents were married in this church. Our wedding in 1968 would be one of the last weddings performed at this same church. The church was later sold to the Albert Einstein Hospital, which has expanded its facilities taking over the entire block.

Just a few blocks north of the church was a used car dealer. I still remember the name; Purcell Motors. They always had a few used Corvettes in the front row of the lot. Often times I would stop and look at them on the way home from church.

Remember, this was 1965 and used Corvettes were around $1,500 to $3,500, depending on the year and options.

As high school graduation was approaching that late spring of 1965, I worked on a plan to buy my first Corvette. (To date I have owned 9 Corvettes).

I already had a buyer for my Crown Victoria Ford. The tough part was convincing my Dad to co-sign for the difference.

It was now June of 1965 and I was out of school. I took a job working at a plastic mold place, working the second shift, which ran from around 6 at night until 2 in the morning.

I was bugging my Dad almost daily to please co-sign for me for a Corvette.

One Sunday I spotted a 1961 Corvette convertible at Purcell Motors. It had the base engine, which was the 283, with a 3-speed manual transmission. The 1961 model was the last year for the 283 engine. I still remember the price - $1,700.

My Dad finally agreed to co-sign for the loan. I sold my Crown Victoria Ford to a friend of mine for $900. That was my down payment on my first Corvette. I was elated, to say the least.

A deal was struck with Purcell Motors and I took delivery of my first Corvette that summer of 1965. I still remember the long drives I would take after getting off work at 2 am. I would first drive by my girlfriend's house and just quickly honk the horn (just to honk "hi" without her parents knowing), and then I would just drive around for several hours before going home to bed. Even then I enjoyed driving.

Life was surely good that summer of 1965. However, dark clouds were looming for me as I had no college plans and Vietnam (although it was called a "conflict") was escalating tremendously. My days of enjoying my first Corvette were short lived.

That fall I decided to enlist in the Army with a few buddies. Since we all expected to be drafted, we were told we had a better chance of avoiding going to Vietnam if we enlisted. Boy, was that not true! (I'll cover more about Vietnam in a future story.)

In order to cut my debt, I made the tough decision to sell my Corvette to a local used car dealer. I also bought two more cheap cars so my girlfriend would have one to drive to school while I was away. I bought her a green 1953 Studebaker coupe. This car was only $40! I also bought a very rare 1940 Studebaker business coupe. I now had three cars, including the 1950 Ford.

Fast forward to 1970 - I was at Yum Yums donuts one night and a guy pulls up driving my old Corvette. It has a For Sale sign on it and he was only asking $900 for the car! At this point I was just recently married and still in the Army and could not afford it!

Fast forward to 1999, my parents are moving out of their house that I grew up in (they lived in that house from 1954-1999). While we are cleaning out the garage, I actually found the front license plate bracket to my 1961 Corvette.
