Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 08-04-10 -
BUICK LITERATURE - PART 4
One interesting fact about our Turbo Regals - the entire production was done at the same plant for 1985 through 1987 model years. They started in Flint, also known as Buick City, and the final assembly took place down the road in nearby Pontiac, Michigan. That explains the letter "P" which is the 11th digit in your VIN number. The 11th digit is the code for the plant your car was built in. Back then GM had about a dozen plants.
However, for the model year 1984, the 11th digit for the plant assembly code should read "H." My chart shows the "H" code stood for Flint, Michigan. If that is the case, I assume the 1984s were all built in Flint, which included the final assembly.
PHOTO 1 - Shows first an original 1984 Service Parts Identification label or trunk ID label, and the one below it is for a 1985 Turbo Regal. (We have blacked out the last digits of the VIN numbers.) If you look closely and find the "W" codes you will see the code "WE2" for both of these, which means both were Grand Nationals. Notice how the format of 1984 Service Parts identification label appears slightly different from the 1985 label.
The other major difference between the two labels is on the 1984 label the codes run in alphabetical order across. On the 1985 label they run down each column in alphabetical order. That 1985 system remained in effect for 1986 and 1987 as well.
Please keep in mind my knowledge of the 1984 and 1985 Turbo Regals is quite limited compared to what I know about the 1986 and 1987 Turbo Regal models. The labels we are posting are coming of cars we have recently dismantled.
From what I recall about the Pontiac GTOs (1964-1974), these cars were produced at 13 different plants throughout the USA. It stands to reason, because GTOs were made at 13 different plants, GTO owners probably see subtle differences between cars produced at different assembly plants.
After the "P" code in your Turbo Regal VIN number, there are 6 remaining digits. These last 6 digits relate to your sequence production number. Example; for all 1987 models, the first digit is a 4. In looking at the 1986 trunk ID label we featured last week, the first digit after the "P" digit is a 2.
In looking at a 1985 trunk ID label, the first digit after the "P" digit code is the number 4.
For the 1984 trunk ID label, the first digit after the "H" code is the number 6.
As a Turbo Regal owner for any of these years (1984-1987), we are quite fortunate that GM started the Service Parts Identification labels format. I think this started with the 1984 model year. I canâ€™t say for certain it was used on all 1984 models, but they were used on our Buicks.
Speaking of the rare 1984 Grand Nationals. We had a visit Saturday from Phil Errett, who lives in Ontario, Canada. Phil has been a customer of ours since 1988 when he bought his 1984 Grand National. He stopped in to pick up a hood pad, which we had saved for him off a 1984 Turbo Regal. Phil has spent years restoring his 1984 Grand National and has over 180,000 miles of "seat time" behind the wheel. He went with me to the Hatboro Car Show and another car show in Doylestown on Saturday night.
Of course, Phil's car has the highly-sought after Lear Siegler seats and the optional touch climate control. The early Turbo Regals (1984-1985) had some unique features that never appeared in the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals. Some of these would be the radio options. Phil's car had the factory am/fm cassette radio with clock. The code for this radio is "UU7."

Visible above it is the touch climate control that was an option in 1984-1985-1986 only. The second photo shows the original chart for all 1984 Buick radios. To the far left would be the code assigned to each feature and the Buick models are listed across the top. The radio shown at the top is "UU6," which was the top-of-the-line radio and cost more money than the "UU7." This seems strange, since logically you would think the higher number code would have been the better radio and would cost more!

ANOTHER KEEPSAKE FOR TURBO OWNERS -
Another item you may have gotten from the seller with your Turbo Regal would be a set of keys with the punch outs still with them and the ID tag showing the year and stock number for the car.

The set on the right has 2 keys and 2 key punch outs with the yellow tag reading, "1987 Gr Nat'l 2 dr black Stock Number 9677."
This reminds me of something attached to my main key ring I carry every day. It is one of my Army dog tags from 1966-1970.
ANOTHER TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE PART 4 -
In the early 1970s, we rented a huge house that had a 6-bay garage. In addition to living there, we also ran our printing business and towing business from the property. We also rented 2 garages from our elderly neighbor, who did not even own a car. There were certain well-known muscle cars in our area, which made an impression on me. One of the better-known cars locally was a bright red 1962 Super Sport 4-speed with the highly-desirable 409. Painted in white lettering on the front fenders were the words, "Get-around." He bought the car brand new and raced it frequently at the nearby dragstrips. The car was his baby.
The owner, Ron was a little older than me, so it wasn't until the early 1970s that we got to know each other. He operated a garage and also sold cars from his lot. At the time, I would do some towing for him. He also knew a lot of the same guys I knew. Our house was maybe 1/2 mile from his shop. He knew I had lots of garage space and asked about storing his 409 Chevy for him.
So, for about a year, we stored his precious 409 Chevy until we moved up to our house in Furlong. Eventually we sold our towing business. I remember hearing back in the mid-1990s that he died of a massive heart attack. In all these years, I never saw his car again or heard what happened to it after he died.
This past Saturday I went to the Hatboro show that we mentioned in last week's Inner Circle. I was amazed to actually see Ron's car, complete with the white lettering on the front fender "Get-around" on display at the show. The car looked just like I remembered it when it sat in one of our garages in the early 1970s. His wife was there and I talked to her. Ron was only 51 years young when he passed away in 1995. It turns out she kept the car until a year ago, since it held so many memories for her.
The new owner is basically a caretaker for the car. While I was talking to her, I was amazed at how many people stopped and looked at the car and remembered the days gone by and what memories it invoked for them.
She told me he always took it to his high school reunions. This car was made even more famous when the Beach Boys had their hit record "409."

FOLLOW-UP TO OUR AUTOMOBILE QUARTERLY FIREBIRD POSTER STORY -
Here's another quick follow-up story. This past week we received an email from Clem Sousa, a long-time GTO and Buick customer. He has both of the Automobile Quarterly posters; the Firebird and the GTO posters that we referred to 07-21-10 Inner Circle.
Clem actually came to our house in the mid 1980s with his then girlfriend Renee. When they did, they stopped on our street (Sugar Bottom Road) and took a photo of Renee in front of the same barn the Judge GTO was photographed in that poster. Renee later became his wife!

1984-1987 Regal -
GNX - TRANS AM STYLE 16" x 8
These GNX - TRANS AM style wheels have the black mesh center and are 16" x 8" with the proper offset to fit the 1984-1987 Regals. These resemble the popular original GNX wheels. Do not confuse this with the version we have sold in the past, known as "Kirban-Style" GNX wheels.
These wheels are manufactured with brand new tooling and are clearcoated. Wheels have the proper offset to fit under your fenders. We sell these as a complete set of 4 wheels, 20 correct lug nuts, 20 lug nut black caps, 4 chrome-plated valve stems, 4 black center caps, and 4 "TURBOCHARGED" center cap decals.
The original center caps on the original GNX were actually the existing Trans Am caps. GM simply affixed the "GNX" paper decal over the Trans Am medallion. This set includes the "TURBOCHARGED" Decals (4) Set, Part #7113.
If you own a 1984, 1985, or 1986 Turbo Regal the GM front springs on these years were a different spring rate. You will need to change the front springs to avoid having the tires rub when you go over bumps. We recommend our front springs, Part #6566. If you plan on carrying heavy items in the trunk or four friends, we recommend you upgrade the rear springs to our variable rate rear springs, Part #1520 on any 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 Regal.
For shocks the best ones you can buy are the Bilsteins to further improve the ride quality of your Turbo Regal. The overall height is actually slightly less than what is currently on the car. The speedometer is not affected.
Originally the GNX used 245/50s by 16s up front and 255/50s by 16 in the rear. For best results, we recommend going with 245/50s on the fronts and the backs. Depending on the year Turbo Regal and what suspension upgrades you have made, we do not recommend the larger 255/50s for the rear. However, if you want to go with 255/50s in the rear, trial fit these wheels first to be sure you have enough clearance.
The good news is these wheels will look pretty much dead on with the mesh black center that matches the original GNX mesh center. They are 100% brand new and weigh about 18 lbs each. Of all the available optional wheels, these are the most desirable and can really enhance your pride and joy.
Keep in mind, we will take good used original Grand National wheels in partial trade. This can help save you some money, since you also need to buy new tires.

GM PARTS UPDATE -
It appears that the GM supply of the factory 1986-1987 GM factory original molded boost line kits are dwindling and may already have disappeared from GM's warehouses inventory. We currently have a decent supply of them.
This is a very critical part, for any 1986-1987 Turbo Regal, since it is needed to control boost. They have 3 specially formed hoses with a special size diameter T in between two of the molded hoses. These also have the GM wording on them.
Over a period of time, heat can cause the hoses to swell and crack. While they last, we have them available for $44.95 plus shipping, Part #6644. Supplies are limited.
