9-29-10 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members - 09-29-10

As a follow up to last week's Inner Circle I went through some of our old monthly Grand News issues. (I have every issue). In late 1989 we originally listed that we had purchased all the remaining GNX jackets from Molly. It appears we had around 50-60 total original GNX jackets back then. We priced them initially back then at $80 each or 2 for $150.

It appears in 1989 we were selling his Grand National T-shirts as well as his Grand National and GNX hats. As late as January 1996 we still had various Molly Design apparel available. If I recall, the last GNX jackets we sold were size small. People probably bought those to keep as a collectible, since most people needed the larger sizes.

While researching the above information, I read a classified ad we ran listing a real GNX with 33 actual miles for $35,000. This was in 1990. It was during the early 1990s that GNXs were at their lowest value hovering around $30,000 to $35,000.

When the GNX was new, ASC (who did the project with Buick) produced what would become the most sought-after poster ever offered on the GNX.

Initially, it could be had for free from ASC. I think you just had to send them some small amount to cover postage. They did limit you as to how many you could get.

We used to order them under different names and addresses. At one point we used to sell them for $50.

The poster was originally done by James Ibusuki. We got permission from James to use that same 3/4 front shot of the GNX for our book, "Kirban's Guide to 1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regals" that was first printed in 1997.

That same year James Ibusuki produced an individually numbered and signed offset lithograph printed on acid-free archival paper entitled, "Ten Years After." This was limited to just 547 impressions plus 55 artist proofs - One edition only. The image size of these was 13.5 inches by 24.5 inches.

PHOTO 1 - Shows the well-known ASC GNX poster that we had framed. It measures 18" wide by 24" tall. A word of caution, today some of the ones you may find for sale are actual copies and not the original poster from ASC!

PHOTO 2 - Shows the Certificate of Authenticity that James Ibusuki put with each of the 547 impressions that he created initially back in 1997. Of all the different GNX posters/photos that have been produced over the years, it is the one James Ibusuki did that is probably the best known and the most valuable one to own. So if you own either one of the original ASC-style GNX posters or one of his limited impressions, you have a great collectible.

In the Spring of 2005, the magazine called "The Style Review" had James Ibusuki's famous GNX print in all its glory printed on the inside last page. This magazine was published twice a year back then and mailed to current Buick owners. You can see that Buick, even as late as 2005, still recognized the impact that the GNX had in the market place.

Photo 3 - Shows the cover of the Spring 2005 issue of "The Style Review" magazine. The second photo shows the GNX print. The magazine pages are 9" wide by 10-1/2" high. At one time we sold about 30 copies of this magazine that I believe is long out of print now. So, there is quite a lot of different GNX related things that have been done in print over the years. Ironically, a Tiger Woods ad with the Buick LaCrosse is on the back cover!

To view James Ibusuki's gallery of prints he has done and what he currently has available, go to his website - www.dragracingart.com

One of the unique autographed items that was created at my 60th Birthday bash was done by "Look What I Got." They are located in Imlay City, Michigan. They collected autographs from the special guests and vendors that were in attendance for that event.

PHOTO 4 - Shows this Limited Edition Poster. It measures 14" wide by 11" high. It's a print of the original with autographs from 12 of the invited guests and vendors that were in attendance. Vendors who signed it are: Paul Castle from World Of Motorworks, Jay Frick from Jay's GN, John Spina from Caspers Electronics, Bruce Toelle from PTS Xtreme Transmission, Terry Shaw from Automotive Legal Service, Ted Hirsch from Epitome, Pete Hoffman (who works for us), and Darrell Kirban (our son.) It also includes invited guests, Pete Serio (The Window Rattled Guy), Richard Clark, Molly Sanders, and myself.

There are 12 artist proofs, which each of the 12 signers received as a gift. Two master originals exist, and exactly 87 copies where produced. We recently purchased the few remaining copies and have them for sale in the listed parts at the end of this email. We will also have them available at our upcoming Open House on October 9th, 2010.

Watch for more Buick Literature next week - Part 12

In a recent Inner Circle, we covered information about the hardbound GNX books that Buick offered. This idea was not unique just for the GNX. A few years later, another car manufacturer came out with a special new model and did a similar thing by offering two slightly different hardbound books related to this new model.

One book was sold to the general public and ran about 50 pages. The other one book was specific for the owners of these cars. This version was slightly different in overall size and ran over 60 pages.

Today neither is available. Of course, the one that went to the original car owners is valued a lot higher since fewer were printed.

This car has ceased production a few years back.

Name the car model I am referring to.

Here are the rules:

No turbo company related employees are eligible.

You get two guesses.

To be eligible, your 2 guesses must be emailed directly to me personally - [email protected]

The first two correct guesses will receive one of the limited copies of the posters shown in Photo 4 of this issue.

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which ones you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

We need stock 1986-1987 Turbo Regal turbos for cores.

For each complete turbo you send us, you will received either a check for $75 for or a Letter of Credit for $100 for any parts listed on our website. Just specify which you want for your turbo.

By sending us complete cores, it enables us to supply other owners with rebuilt units and also our TA 49 versions. The TA 49 turbos we sell require the use of the stock exhaust housing. By using that section, no low-end torque is lost in regular street driving.

THANK YOU for helping to keep the parts available for other Turbo Regal owners.

GREAT NEWS - The stock style 1986-1987 headers are now in stock again. Mike at TA Performance has put a set on a stock car with no fit problems.

Kits will be dropped shipped from Arizona, so shipping/handling will range from $20 to $35.

We also have access to a limited number of just the driver's header for those of you that need to replace that header.

Here is the link to these headers on the web site -

1986-1987 Turbo Regal -

All fabrication, materials and production are 100% made in the USA.

TA Performance has long been a well-respected source for Buick hard core parts for both V8 and also V6 Turbo Regals for over 25 years.

Here is an ad for a GNX for sale on our website.

Here is the link to view his ad and photos -

I am selling my mint original classic GNX. If you are looking for a GNX, I need not to explain what this car is all about. This is number #170 out of #547 GNX's that General Motors built.

A true muscle car that would kill anything in the 1980s. I am the second owner. I purchased the car in Minnesota in September 2005. I have all the documentation including the window sticker, jacket and other booklets. The car had about 5,900 miles when I bought it and it now has 6,768 miles. The car is in a heated stored garage and is in mint condition. Original paint, rims and tires and the power antenna works!

The price is negotiable or interesting trades with cash and a Turbo Buick will be considered. Car is also on ebay.

The price is $68,000. Serious buyers only contact Jimmy Rosario at 1-347-682-1487.

Pictures can be found on our website.

I am looking for an original Grand National hood with original paint, no rust and no dents. My car has original paint and I want to keep it all original as long as I can. Contact Rich Warner at 914-474-4009, if you have one for sale.

It appears that the GM supply of the factory 1986-1987 GM factory original molded boost line kits are dwindling and may already have disappeared from GM's warehouses inventory. We currently have a decent supply of them.

This is a very critical part, for any 1986-1987 Turbo Regal, since it is needed to control boost. They have 3 specially formed hoses with a special size diameter T in between two of the molded hoses. These also have the GM wording on them.

Over a period of time, heat can cause the hoses to swell and crack. While they last, we have them available for $44.95 plus shipping, Part #6644. Supplies are limited.
