04-11-2018 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 04-11-2018 -

IN THE BEGINNING OF BUICK TURBOS -

While I was searching for other Buick information, I came across this early Buick Turbo ad. This is back when the catch phrase was, “Wouldn’t you really rather have a Buick?” The ad features the Hawk logo.

PHOTO 1 - In the photo to the left we show the actual full-color magazine ad for the early turbocharged V6 format. Note how the entire photo simply shows the turbo and not the entire engine. The power six emblem you see on the plenum is made with the same material as the 1984-1987 Grand National exterior emblems.

The photo to the right shows a brand new Power Six emblem that would have been on this plenum. I also show another Power Six emblem that has been made into a stick pin. I have no idea who made this emblem or even when this was available. The choice of colors seems strange to me.

COMING SOON REPRODUCTION SPID DECALS -

“SPID” stands for “Service Parts Identification Decal.” I usually refer to it simply as the trunk ID label or trunk ID decal. Whatever you call it, it first appeared on the 1984 models. The 1984, 1985, and 1986 was one version with the GM part #14085266. The decal changed slightly with the 1987 Buick models, as did the part number. In 1987, the part number was 14065987. GM used this version for several years after the 1987 GM models. ECS, who does all the GM VIN decals that we sell, is the only source licensed by GM to reproduce these SPID decals.

However, he can only do it from an existing original. In many cases, depending on exposure to the sun and how dark the original copy was, many of these decals have started to fade. This is a chance to get a new replacement. As of this writing, we have not yet worked out all the details. I know the price will be $60 plus $7 for Priority Mail shipping.

I am unsure at this point if he can do the 1984, 1985, 1986 version. I know he is set up to do the 1987 version of the SPID decals.

Watch for updates and part numbers once we have ironed out all the details.

What is interesting is Buick was rather loose with applying the SPID decal as the cars came down the assembly line. By this I mean you seldom see two in the exact same position.

On affixing the jacking instruction decal, it is evident there was no exact format to attach it to the trunk lid!

More pride and quality control is evident today from all the car manufacturers.

Over the years since 1987, the SPID label has changed several times, both in the font style and actual size the decal, as well as has the location. On one of my recent trips to the junkyard, I took various photos of where some of these SPID decals are placed. For example, GM trucks usually had a different SPID label and it was attached inside the glove box, in many cases. Again, I’m not an expert beyond our cars to know what GM cars had different SPID decals and what years they put them in what part of the trunk. I am merely pointing out that GM used different locations over the years for their various car lines.

PHOTO 2 - Here we show 4 different locations of the SPID decal. The glove box, spare tire cover, trunk lid, and the trunk floor pan. These are all from various later GM models.

MORE SPID INFORMATION -

When our cars were fairly new I always made it a point to buy any Buick manuals or information papers related to these cars. It was one of the few smart things I did back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I knew this information would prove very valuable and it also would provide proof for articles I write.

Finding anything on the SPID labels has been a real challenge.

The most details I have found are in a General Motors Parts Publication Reference Catalog dated January 1993. It shows (with various illustrations) the typical 1987 SPID decal #14065987 and how each group for codes applies to certain groups of parts in the typical GM car or truck. Basically, the SPID label is the DNA for your car. In other words, it not only lists the particular options in your car, but also all the various other components such as springs, suspension, even tires, etc.

No matter how sharp your knowledge is, it’s virtually impossible to decode every single code on the SPID label. Again, I am far from being an expert, but I know enough of the codes related to the options on the SPID decal.

PHOTO 3 - The photo to the left shows the cover of this rare Buick Reference catalog I have in my reference material. The photo to the right shows a typical page showing the illustration of the 1987 SPID decal and how certain codes apply to the engine assembly.

We will cover more on this subject in future Inner Circle emails.

SPEAKING OF ORIGINAL BUICK DECALS -

Two of the rarest decals would have been on your Turbo Regal as it arrived at the selling dealership. Actually, I believe there were three different decals attached to the windshield. I have two of them, which are pictured below.

I came across these in my files, which are noted as being on the windshield when the car was delivered to the dealership. In most cases, buyers would never see these decals as they were removed as the cars were detailed for delivery.

It reminds me of the truck loads I see of new Audis that come in on open transport trucks, all neatly wrapped in a tight-fitting white thin cover with a clear portion for the windshield and door. This is to protect the cars from the various elements during transport on open. I am sure once this cover is removed, they are simply thrown in the trash!

PHOTO 4 - We show these two original decals that would have been on the windshield when the car was transported to the selling dealership. Once each car was detailed and prepped for sale, these decals would have been removed.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

1985-1987 Buick GRAND NATIONAL -
ONE-PIECE BUCKET SEAT COVER

Because the original grey and black pallex Grand National seat material is so costly, here is a simple and inexpensive method to protect it.

We offer a one-piece form-fitting seat cover for the front bucket seat. No tools are required and it’s easy to clean. You simply slide it over the seat. It can be removed easily.

This seat cover has the same two-color color (black and grey) design, so it looks like it was made specifically for the Grand National.

The durable and breathable material is double nylon mesh cloth with 2mm thick sponge in the middle. The spandex back provides a universal fit that conforms to the Grand National’s bucket seat.

It’s an inexpensive investment to protect your Grand National bucket seats from damage.
To purchase one cover, order #7821. To order two covers, order #7822.

Another excellent way to protect the seats.

7821 - 1985-1987 Buick Grand National - One-piece Bucket Seat Cover - $18.95

7822 - 1985-1987 Buick Grand National -

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING -

We will NOT be listing any of the letter coded parts in next week’s Inner Circle as it is too close to the date of our Spring Open House.

So, if you want any lettered item, it’s best to email me now.

I probably should have called it the Winter/Spring Open House the way the weather has been the last 4 weeks. As I write this week’s Inner Circle it is a balmy 39 degrees outside.
