Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 10-10-2018 –

BREAKING NEWS NOW IN STOCK 22-PIECE BODY BUSHING KIT -

As we noted the other week, we now have the 22-piece body bushing set in stock. These sets include the upper GNX bushing, part #7305. Some of the other various kits being marketed lack that bushing and, in some cases, are incorrect. That is the reason we waited until our supplier had them available again.
A nice upgrade to make to your pride and joy over the upcoming winter months. Be sure to also buy our grade 8 bolt kit, part #6974. This way you have all brand new bolts in the proper length and proper grade.

Ideally you should also purchase the core support bushing kit, part #7304. That way you have upgraded all the bushings related to the frame and the car body.

The longer you wait to do this, the tougher it can be to remove the bolts without any issues with the cage nut. If that happens, the cost of the project increases requiring welding and removal of part of your interior!

The upside is that the quality of your ride vastly improves as the car will ride like it is new again.

TWO UNUSUAL COINCIDENCES THIS PAST WEEK –

The first unusual coincidence happened Wednesday night. I had driven out to Lancaster are to visit my younger brother for the day and take him shopping and to dinner at Olive Garden. I then booked a motel room just outside of Lancaster on Route 30, which would make it an easy drive the next morning to the Fall Carlisle event.

Years ago, my parents retired to that area and when I would visit them we often went to a nearby Bobs Evans for dinner. This Bob Evans is located near where I stayed last Wednesday night. I decided to stop at the Bob Evans for a piece of apple pie and coffee before calling it a night.

When I got the check, I got a chill as the exact total was “$6.66,” which happens to be the title of my Dad’s bestselling book from years ago. The book “666” had sales of over ½ million copies back in the 1970s and 1980s. Not bad for a guy who did not write his first book until the age of 40!

My bestselling book is my first book, “Kirban’s Guide to 1986 and 1987 Buick Turbo Regals.” Sales are approaching the 5,000 mark. I wrote it at age 50.

The next unusual coincidence happened Thursday, the next day at Fall Carlisle. As any one that has been to the Carlisle Swap Meet realizes, it occupies over 90 acres with thousands of vendors. I only spent about 4 hours there and walked maybe 20% of the rows of vendors.

On one row I spotted a vendor that only had a few items on a small table, and one of the parts was a GTO optional plastic wood steering wheel missing the horn ring and center medallion. The price tag was $1,950. As I have told my readers several times in the past, the 1964 optional plastic wood steering wheel in nice shape today fetches $1,500 to $2,300. depending on condition and if it is complete. Unfortunately, I can’t find what this optional 1964 steering wheel sold for in 1964. My guess is, it was probably around a $100 option.

A woman was sitting on a chair behind the table. I asked her a few questions without telling her who I am. I remarked that I just did a run of the horn rings for these 1964 optional steering wheels and Max Performance has them. She mentions that her husband has been a long-time GTO person and then mentions my name without realizing that she’s talking to Dennis Kirban.

Once I tell her who I am, she says let me call my husband as he is walking around Carlisle and would love to see me.

Once I realized who he is, I remember that back when Darrell was 16 or 17 I had just sold Eileen’s 1968 GTO hardtop to this very same person! Shortly after selling him Eileen’s GTO, I called him to see if he would sell it back to me so Darrell could have it. Darrell had just totaled his first car when he hit a bridge. He quickly agreed and even delivered it to our house back then.

I had not seen Mike for probably 25 years or more. Once he came back to his vendor spot, we reminisced about the good ole days. It turns out that $1,950 GTO steering wheel is the same steering wheel I sold him in the early 1980s for a whopping $250! Talk about a good investment. He then said he recently sold another one that was complete for $2,250. I told him if he failed to sell the steering wheel, I would give him $350 for it!

The top right photo shows the 1964 GTO wood wheel that I initially spotted on the table for $1,950.00 The bottom left photo shows Mike holding the 1964 GTO wood wheel. The bottom right photo shows me and young Darrell with Eileen’s old 1968 GTO after Darrell painted it silver back around 1986. The same 1968 GTO that Mike graciously sold me back so Darrell could own it. I think he sold it back to me at the same price I sold it to him for.

Few years later Darrell would paint it burgundy and eventually sold it locally. Today, we have no idea if it survived and if so where it is. If it did survive, the car has some very interesting history as I have photos of the car and it has been in at least one national car magazine. Darrell showed this 1968 GTO at our first Reunion event in the summer of 1988.

True story……

PHOTO 2 – The top left shows just part of the largest assortment of GM hardware I have ever seen in one place. This seller had several rows like you see here. The hardware. I believe. was all Corvette related. The top right photo shows a ¾ Corvette clip if you need one. The bottom left photo shows a pair of El Caminos. The burgundy one was priced at $10,500 and the one behind it barely visible was priced at $9,500. The bottom right photo shows one of those bargain Cadillacs, one owner, 8,000-mile 1997 Eldorado for just $5,900.

PHOTO 3 – The top left shows quite an assortment of parts to create this imposing truck. The top right photo shows a completely restored Chevelle made to look like the Chevelle SS. The bottom left photo shows an original 1969 GTO Judge left side quarter panel. Too bad the rest of the car probably got destroyed! The bottom right photo shows this limited edition Richard Petty Pontiac. The sign on the windshield said only 334 were built in white of the 1,000 produced. Car had a price tag of $6,500.



REPORT FROM FALL CARLISLE –

As always the case, Turbo Regals were in short supply as were any used parts for them. You could have had your pick from over a dozen late-model Cadillacs in the car corral to drive home! For around $7,500 or less, you could have had your pick from several! I did talk to one of our customers who had a fairly nice 1987 Grand National clone he had built from a wreck. The car looked really nice with a price tag under $18 grand. Seller was being honest that the car was a clone. By clone he had a wrecked original Grand National with 52,000 miles on it and switched everything over to a regular Regal frame. According to Jim Wilson, a customer of ours who also attended Fall Carlisle, he saw a 1985 T-Type with a price of $7,900. Mileage was 113,000.

When I was talking to the owner of the clone Grand National, another gentleman came up and said he had his 1986 Grand National hardtop with just 12,000 miles set up to go thru the Carlisle auction later that day. Although I did not get over to the auction area to view the 12,000-mile Grand National, he described it as being super mint and all original and untouched. He also knew who I was. He was seeking 50 grand.

As my readers know, the 1986 Grand National saw less production and only had a few visual differences from the 1987 model. I told the owner I wished him well, but I didn’t think there would be enough potential buyers to bid on his car later that evening. Again, this was strictly my opinion and I have no idea if the car sold and, if so, at what price.

If any of you were at the auction that Thursday night, please email me the results of the sale of the 1986 Grand National. The weather was picture perfect last Thursday when I was there for about 4 hours.

PHOTO 4 – The top left photo shows this very nice 1987 Grand National clone. The top right photo shows an original 1983 Hurst Oldsmobile with 32,000 miles for $15,900. Car was a one owner showing some wear and having typical paint issues. The bottom left photo shows a mint original 1969 Oldsmobile Tornado with 26,000 original miles with a price tag of $16,995. Gorgeous car inside and out and if you owned it, you would have one of the heaviest GM cars from the 1960s! The bottom right photo clearly shows that not every body kit, especially one for a Corvette, adds to its value! I can’t recall the asking price for the car, but believe it was under $8,500.



1984 MONTE CARLO SS - FOR SALE -

Just saw this 1984 Monte Carlo SS yesterday. It is absolutely all original. Garaged since new. Owner passed away. White with blue interior. Even rides on Eagle GT tires! Carpets still glisten in the sunlight. No cracks in the dash no wear issues, no rust no dents no scrapes. This car is actually nicer than my white Turbo T that I sold. Car from any angle inside outside underside would pass for 20,000 miles. Mileage is 70,000.

In other words, Kirban quality inside and out. A car that is classic looking that you can drive and not lose money on as you enjoy it. I have photos. My email is - [email protected]  Car has a price tag of just $11,500. Paint appears to me to be 100% original and the doors shut perfect. It has door VIN labels and trunk ID label. Wheels are mint. Exhaust is 100% original. Condition is simply outstanding and, believe me, I tried to look for flaws. Located about 20 minutes from our shop.

You would be very hard pressed to find a better example at this price. To compete on a show level, all it needs is 2 hours of attention detailing the engine compartment, 4 of our valve stem caps, our trunk carpet and that’s all it needs. Car even has the original correct GM floor mats in it! It's Kirban quality.



1985 OLDS 442 - FOR SALE -

This 1985 OLDS 442 needs work. It is hardtop with over 130,000 miles on it. It has a good body, factory wheels, runs and drives. It has not been on the road in 2 years. If you are looking for a project over the winter this is a rare one. I can provide photos. My email is - [email protected]   Buyer is wanting $6,995.



STEERING WHEELS –

I find it ironic that not only did we get the 1964 GTO steering wheel horn ring produced, but we got the Grand National horn ring made as well. Back in the 1960s it was either a written or unwritten rule that all steering wheels had to have the finger grips on the backside of the steering wheel. That has not been the case for many years. Back then headlights, I believe, all had to be round and a specific diameter. If I am wrong, it appears 99% car manufacturers followed a certain format. Today that is not the case.



TAKES ALMOST $50 GRAND TODAY –

A recent report shows the average retail price today for a new full-size pickup truck is $48,377 before taxes and tags. Nine years ago, the average price for a new full-size pickup truck was $31,000. In some cases, if you tack on enough options, it can easily top $100,000. It makes far more sense to forgo the new truck smell and let the first buyer take that initial hit!



1964 VW BEETLE ONE MILLION DOLLARS –

You read it correctly - a 1964 VW Beetle with the asking price of one million dollars. Driven a scant 23 miles when new, it has been stored until 2014 when the 87-year-old owner passed away. He had bought it new as a spare figuring his 1957 VW Beetle would not last forever and he did not like the upcoming 1965 VW Beetle. He bought the 1964 as a spare. The current seller apparently is hoping for a moon shot or at the very least has left a little wiggle room if a potential customer shows any interest at the million dollar asking price. When new the 1964 VW Beetle sold for around $1,700 and change.



THOM SANSOUCIE AUTO SERIES LIMITED EDITION TURBO REGAL ART –

We have just one of the 24” by 36” Turbo Regal art prints available, part #7203. It is number 599 of 2000 produced. The normal retail price is $159.95 plus shipping. We are discontinuing this art print and also the small one, part #7202.

We also have on a piece of acrylic a picture of a 1966 GTO. I bought this several years ago at Carlisle. It measures approximately 15” by 20”. It is based on the box cover of the 1966 GTO slot car. That slot car has a value today of about $500 if you got one unbuilt in the original box. (I have one in my private collection). Either item makes for a nice unique gift.

HISTORY OF THE ADJUSTABLE FUEL REGULATOR UPDATE –

Paul Vilser, a long-time customer of ours that bought a WE4 brand new in 1987, reminded me last week of another format that was sold years ago to adjust fuel pressure on a stock fuel pressure regulator.

It looked similar to a smaller version of an old-style wheel puller or something similar. It clamped down on the sides of the stock fuel pressure regulator and adjustment was made with a set screw arrangement that entered the top. I apologize for the vague description, but I have don’t have one to explain exact details. According to Paul, it worked extremely well and he used it until the adjustable ones became available.

So, in quick review, my guess is at least a half dozen various formats to make the stock fuel pressure regulator adjustable were marketed in the late 1980s and early 1990s. At least none of these formats created any issues to return the car to stock if need be. On the other hand, some of the early down pipes that had a cut out on them required owners to cut their inner passenger plastic fender.

What many of these owners may not have realized at the time, is that passenger side inner fender is different on a turbo car versus a regular V6 or V8 Buick engine in 1986-1987. When I was buying these cars, I always looked at that passenger inner fender to see if it had been replaced due to being modified at some point or possibly due to an accident to the right side of the car. The difference being the regular V6 and V8 application had humps for attaching various relays whereas the Turbo inner fender was smooth across the top surface. If the car did have this wrong inner fender I would look more carefully at that side of the car for any sign of a previous accident.

The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.

It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.

We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.

TIP FROM KIRBAN –

Got a rattle coming from the rear area of your car? Check the adjustment on the trunk lid. With the trunk lid closed, you should not be able to still depress it. If you can still depress it, open the trunk and adjust the rubber stopper located at each back corner and thread them outward 1-2 turns and shut the trunk lid again. Problem solved.

Sorry, I got no answer for the major gaps between the rear spoiler and quarter panels!

1984-1987 Buick Regal (All Models) -
Reproduction METAL RADIO BRACKETS (2) SET

We now offer an excellent reproduction of the unique brackets Buick used to secure the radio in any 1984-1987, Regal including the Turbo models.

The metal bracket is the same for both sides but mounts differently on each side of the GM radio.

This is a critical part you need to install any factory correct 1984-1987 GM radio. It also fits many of the later GM radios that have the same frame and size, including some of the early factory GM CD players.

Another excellent replacement for any interior restoration.

This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
