Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 04-12-2017 -

BIGGEST NEWS IN THE TURBO REGAL WORLD -

The biggest news in the Turbo Regal world involves the extremely rare find of a pair of untitled 1987 Grand Nationals that have been in hibernation for 30 years. Many of you may have seen articles about this rare find. Over 20 people emailed me articles on it as well.

I have talked to one of the people involved and hope to have some more details about these cars.

The cars were still on the original MSO (never titled).

Several things make this a rare find. 1 - The cars have sequential VIN numbers and I am told have the exact same options. 2 - Since these cars have been in Oklahoma all this time, they have survived all the tornados that seem to rip through that part of the country almost like clock-work.

OUR UPCOMING OPEN HOUSE -

Our upcoming Open House is now less than two weeks away. Last week Russ delivered the impressive 3 special trophies we will be awarding. They are really unique looking and stand over 2 feet tall.

PHOTO 1 - Shows all three beautiful trophies. One will be awarded to the owner that drives their Turbo Regal the furthest distance. One will be awarded to the Turbo Regal I personally like the best. Last, but not least, one will be awarded to the Turbo Regal needing the most TLC (Tender Loving Care) that comes.

REPRODUCTION REAR 4" x 10" REAR RADIO SPEAKERS -

One of the toughest items to find today is a proper size rear radio speaker. This is due in part because the back package shelf in our cars is quite narrow. Later GM cars have a wider back package shelf so they can easily take a larger 6" x 10" speaker.

One clever idea Buick did was having what basically is a quick release bracket that can easily drop down to replace the speakers, rather than having a screw set up to fiddle with while hanging over the trunk.

A few years ago I did find over 100 factory new original speakers, which we sold quickly.

These reproduction speakers we now offer have fit real nice. However, you do have to cut the factory plug ends off the wires and attach a spade-style plug. These reproduction rear speakers are now in stock, part #7789.

PHOTO 2 - The photo to the left shows the back side of 3 speakers. The first one to the left is a factory GM speaker that was in my car. The middle speaker appears to be a later factory replacement one. Both of these two accept the factory-style black plug. The speaker to the far right is the new reproduction speaker we now carry. As you can see the magnet is almost the same size. The height is almost the same height as well. These are two critical factors when considering a rear speaker replacement. The photo to the right shows the top side of the three speakers in the same order.

PHOTO 3 - We show 4 different, yet similar speaker brackets that GM used to secure the speakers to the back package shelf. The far left bracket is the one that was in my personal car. The one next to it will also work. The two remaining brackets appear to be for speakers with a smaller diameter magnet. You would have to bend the tabs down so the magnet would seat at the base of the bracket. These brackets would need to be modified to make them work. I had these in my parts collection so I don’t believe these two were used in our cars. However, they can probably be bent to work if you discover you have brackets that look like these. The photo to the right shows two GM replacement speakers I came across in various cars in the junkyard and what the original plug ends look like. It is these black plug ends you have to cut off to attach new spade-style ends to the new reproduction speakers.

Finding original old stock 4" x 10" speakers today is extremely difficult. Used ones are almost always cracked due to age and sun damage. I have never ever found a good used 4" x 10" rear speaker. They are always cracked. Because of the narrow back package shelf in our cars, your choices are limited as to what speakers will work without major modification.

In our personal car, I have a non-working original AM radio, so while everything is hooked up and looks factory, the only music I hear is coming from up front under the hood. The sweet sound of a highly-functional turbo powered intercooled V6 engine. NOTE - The AM radio is the rarest stock radio to find today.

PICTURES OF OUR 1987 TURBO REGAL ENGINE COMPARTMENT -

With our 1987 Turbo-T uncovered for the upcoming summer, I figured I would show what a 98% stock engine compartment looks like.

PHOTO 4 - Shows four different views of my engine compartment. The only two non-stock items are the adjustable fuel regulator and the vacuum line to the fuel regulator. Not visible would be the hot wire kit to the fuel pump. Anything aluminum has been polished. The engine compartment has been detailed, but not over done. You can clearly see all the factory decals. Most of my other vehicles are almost as nice as this car under the hood.

NEW REPRODUCTION RADIATOR COMING SOON -

We will have a sample of this new radiator on display at our Open House. It is produced by Max Performance who also owns Pypes Exhaust. We supplied the original for the project and Nick Micale in Arizona has been testing it for several months for Max Performance.

Because of our location, we will be able to pick them up like we pick up the Pypes Exhaust Systems, which saves costly shipping to us.

The retail price of this new reproduction aluminum radiator will be just under $400. It’s a great reasonable price. Besides giving superior cooling over a stock original radiator.

It will provide better cooling over the stock radiator and all the critical coolant lines for the oil cooler and transmission cooler will bolt up like factory. More details to come as we learn more. Expected production is in the next 60 days.

We are also working on another project with Cardone. The prototype I received the other week was not correct. So we are waiting on a new prototype from Cardone.

We are very fortunate that so many products have been reproduced for our cars by various companies. It’s not a huge market for these major players, but fortunately they see the value and listen to suggestions. In some cases, I can supply the idea and the samples, but seldom have the resources or the connections to produce a final product.

UPDATE ON OUR UPCOMING OPEN HOUSE -

Indications are we have quite a few first-time customers attending. If you are coming in Friday night and staying in the Quakertown area, email me your cell number. I always meet up with Jason from Canada around 8-9 Friday night for dinner. You are welcome to join us for dinner. I need your cell number to advise you as to the exact time. All the restaurants are located within 10 minutes of the various motels in Quakertown on the main road (Route 309). Again, email me - [email protected] - with your cell number.

Also, remember on the large items and discontinued items listed elsewhere in this Inner Circle, you must contact our office and pay for it in advance if you want to be sure we have it aside for you for pick up. This is very important. Already a number of the big items have been reserved.

Paul Castle is bringing the stencil kits for the hood pads. The few hood pads we have left are at an excellent price. They will sell out.

Already we have heard from people from Canada, Michigan, Virginia, and Illinois that are planning to attend for the first time.

For first timers, you will see that we have a nice array of used tagged and bagged items. We will have a good variety of literature for sale.

The No Reserve Auction is always a hit. This year it features several GNX items and some of the remaining grey pallex seat material. As long as the starting bid is met, the item has no reserve.

Plus, you get to have Yum Yums donuts! Last, but, not least, is we have over $4,000 worth of donated items to award at our raffles. Everyone should go home a winner!

We have a very unique item made up just for this event. I have personally signed each on the back with the words “30th Anniversary 1 of 20.” This is a great item for your desk. I just made 20 of them for this 30th Anniversary event.

If you have parts to sell, you are welcome to bring and set up behind your vehicle. All I ask in return is something donated for our raffle and I would like first option on your items, either in trade or cash.

Remember to bring any cores that we need. It also does not matter what type of car you bring. This is not a show type event. Naturally, we expect most of the cars will be Turbo Regals.

We will have our personal white Turbo-T on display. Looking back, I bought this car out of Ohio in March of 2006. I remember getting to the seller’s house around 10 at night. It was brutally cold, maybe at most 15 degrees. I took a quick spin around the block in the car making sure everything functioned and there were no weird noises. I then did a walk around with a flashlight before loading the car for the trip home.

I put the Turbo-T up from sale back then, I think for $12,500. I had zero interest in the Turbo-T because the car had 75,000 miles on it. The car just sat in my pole building for several months. I had already sold my third test car, so I decided I would title this car and keep it. I figured it was important to have one Turbo Regal when you’re in the business.

Today, anyone that sees it realizes the car is an extremely nice example and the miles is not even a consideration as to its value. First timers to our Open House can see just how nice this Turbo-T is. While the engine bay area and interior is 99% stock, the suspension has virtually every upgrade done that we sell. Car rides on the vintage Kirban-style GNX 16" x 8" wheels. Every possible method to lighten the car has also been done. Plus, I have all the records including the Window Sticker for the car from the original owner.

Since this is our 30th year and with such a large assortment of donated raffle items, some of you may be coming in Friday night and may be looking for a motel in our area.

The closest town to us is Quakertown and it has 5 major motels. Quakertown is about 20 minutes from our location. The motels there are Holiday Inn Express, Best Western, Hampton Inn, Spring Hill Suites, and Quality Inn. The Marriott and Holiday Inn Express are both fairly new motels.

All are located by the northeast extension of the PA Turnpike and Route #663.

CORRECTION ON THE NUMBERS PRINTED ON THE BOOST GAUGES -

According to Pete Hoffman, the 1984 and 1985 Turbo Regals had the 0-15 numbers and the 1986 and 1987 had the 0-5-10-15 numbers.

However, as many of you know, mistakes happen and some early 1986 Turbo Regals could possibly have the 0-15 format. Either way, it would have been nice if Buick had made the gauges in a better, more visible format.

FOR SALE - SILVER BULLET RACE CAR -

Here is a link to the “Silver Bullet Race Car” for sale on eBay. This well-known car was at our 2007 Reunion event.

A FEW HOSPITAL SATISTICS -

Here are a few hospital statistics that may cause you some concern.

It is reported that over 250,000 (not a misprint) Americans die each year from preventable doctor screw-ups. The four main problems are unnecessary tests, exposure to surgical smoke, negligent doctors, and medical devices left inside patients (surgical instruments, clamps, needles, scissors and mostly sponges.)

I would think one person in the operating room should be assigned to keep count of the surgical instruments and sponges before and after surgery!

ALMOST A WEEKLY OCCURANCE -

Almost every night on the news this year we hear about tornados and weather disasters in the mid-west part of the country. So far in 2017 there have been 486 tornados compared to just 252 last year during the same time period. That count is almost double from last year.

With those facts, if you reside in the mid-west, it’s best not to buy a house where you simply remove the wheels and set it on the ground! This would seem like a bad choice to make.

NEVER DOUBT THE INTELLIGENCE OF A SQUIRREL -

I have witnessed it more than once in my area, where a squirrel will take to the phone wires to get across a major four lane highway rather than gamble on dodging traffic on the ground in both directions. How do squirrels learn to do this?

BY THE NUMBERS -

By the numbers, 700 vehicles were used with only 100 still useable at the end of filming the latest installment of the “Fast and Furious Series.”

This may hold the record for vehicles used and destroyed in a movie production. The latest installment of the Fast & Furious Series opens next week. It seems with each installment, they get more and more outrageous. With each new movie, more Hollywood-known actors and actresses get on board.

One upcoming film later this summer entitled “Baby Driver” takes a similar path and features some really trick driving skills using what appears to be a red Subaru WRX. This film may be the sleeper of the summer season. You can see trailers on the internet or in theaters.

RIP MR WARMTH -

This past week Don Rickles, better known as “Mr. Warmth,” passed away at the age of 90. A frequent guest on the Late Show with Johnny Carson, his wit was based mostly on insults, but he never used profanity in his acts.

One of the movies he was in was Kelly’s Heroes along with several other major stars, including a very young Clint Eastwood. It’s a great movie, if you have never seen it.

Remember, to avoid disappointment you need to pay for any of the above items you want in advance, so it is put aside with your name on it at our upcoming Spring Open House. In the cases where we listed the actual count available, those items are being discontinued. So those parts are limited.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN -

Always be prepared sometimes even the simplest project can turn into a major project. Here is a case in point.

On my Ranger truck, one of the battery cable ends the bolt had broken away. It has a top post battery format. I figured I would just replace the cable ends. Tried as I might I not could get the cable end of the battery post. I figured I would crack the battery case before it came off. Since I had no idea how old the battery was, I then figured I may as well replace the battery at this point, since I have had the truck 4 years.

I then located the small bolt that secured the bracket that held the battery in the tray. Naturally, it was frozen and it snapped off. I then removed the battery. The bolt that snapped did not snap clean at the base, so I had no way to remove it. So, off I went to Auto Zone to get a new battery. I drilled the plastic bracket to secure the battery in the tray. At the same time I wire brushed and painted the tray.

The point of this story is, at least for me, most simple projects turn into major ones. This is one reason why when I was in high school I always had two cars, since one was usually broken down! Also, my mechanical skills are severely lacking.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

1978-1988 G-Body (Including 1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal Models) -
Reproduction 4″ x 10″ REAR SPEAKERS (2) SET

It has been hard to locate a suitable 4″ x 10″ speaker for the 1984-1987 Turbo Regal rear package shelf. The space is too narrow to use anything but a 4″ x 10″ speaker. It must also fit the factory cage bracket.

We found this suitable reproduction 8 ohm speaker. You do have to replace the connector ends, since the factory plug on the harness will not fit the terminals on this new speaker.

These fit the factory metal cage that GM used to secure the original rear speakers.

Over the years, age and sunlight have probably cracked the original speakers. These are a perfect replacement.

A nice upgrade for any interior restoration.

EXTERIOR SOLAR LED MOTION LIGHT PANEL -

This exterior solar LED motion light panel is a neat compact product that fills a need for any home owner, shop owner, or apartment owner. It’s a simple and inexpensive method to light up a walkway at your house, or garage door way.

Since it’s powered by the sun, it means zero electric costs!

Panel is compact, just 4" x 6" x 1/2". The housing is white. It has 36 LED lights that equals the output of a 100 watt incandescent bulb! It does this with zero costs to your electric bill.

It has 3 different modes that you can set. MODE 1 - It can come on at dusk on low power and stay on until dawn. MODE 2 - It can be set to come on at dusk on low power, go to full power by motion, then revert back to lower power. MODE 3 - It can be set to go on by motion at dusk on full power and turn off after about 10 seconds if no motion is detected or activate by motion walking by it.

Most small solar powered outside motion lights are rated at only 20 to 50 watt and less than 400 lumens, unless you buy the larger ones. This one equals a 100 watt incandescent light and 450 lumens. Not only is this compact and bright enough to light any walk way or entrance, it is priced below most units available in stores.

You can mount this anywhere outside as long as it gets direct sunlight. The ideas are endless. It pays for itself since it draws no electric energy!

SPECIFICATIONS -
Compact size - 4" x 6" x 1/2" - Weighs 6 ounces - 50,000-hour operating life
450 lumens / zero energy usage - Equal to a 100 w incandescent bulb -

Our top left photo shows the actual packaging and the Solar Motion Exterior Light. It comes with directions to set the mode you want. The mounting hardware is included. The top right shows just how bright the 36 LED lights are when they go on. The lower left photo shows our back door entrance at our home lit with a normal 100 watt bulb. TRANSLATOR CUSTOM-MADE BLACK MOUNTING BRACKET

When converting your car to a modern Mass Air Flow sensor, such as an LT1 or LS1 style sensor, a translator is needed. This is a custom-made mounting bracket to hold the Mass Air Flow Sensor Translator.

This bracket provides a simple, yet effective way of mounting the Translator in a convenient location.

This clever bracket was designed and produced by one of our customers. He saw a need to eliminate have the translator wire tied under the hood.

The bracket is made in acrylic and painted black. It mounts using existing holes. NO modifications are made to the car or to the translator. It also leaves enough space below the bracket to access the headlight wiring or if you have the charcoal canister and stock intake or even a 4" Cold Air Intake pipe.

Once installed, the custom-made bracket is barely visible.

The bracket comes with a spacer and easy-to-follow directions.

Our photo on the left shows the bracket and the photo on the right shows it installed on a car.

NOTE - This bracket will not work if you retain the factory air cleaner box.

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
