Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 07-12-2017 -

CHRYSLER NATIONALS / HURST NATIONALS CARLISLE -

This huge Chrysler Nationals / Hurst Nationals dual event is this coming weekend at Carlisle. This is the place to be. It is the very first Hurst Nationals. They already have almost 100 Hurst cars confirmed.

The Hurst portion of this dual event is held directly from Gate 3 at the end of that road. It is called the “Carlisle Expo Center.” I am told about 30 Hurst cars will be inside the building and I think that is where I will be doing a seminar both Friday and Saturday. They do have other speakers as well. This Friday I am speaking at 2 pm until 3:30 pm. Saturday I am speaking at 4 pm until 5:30 pm. I will be bringing several extremely rare Hurst items to show those that attend, along with my traditional M&Ms contest that we do at every seminar.

I have contacted Bill Campbell, the co-founder of Hurst, who is 95 years young. Bill came to our first event back in 1988! He is hoping to attend and his daughter plans to bring him.

Interesting enough, one of the major features for the Chrysler event is Dave Walden, owner of ECS Automotive, who does all the VIN decals for us. They will be will be showcasing his one-of-kind 1970 Cuda 4 door. Over a half million dollars was spent to create this unique vehicle. It will be featured in Building T. It will be the first time I will get a chance to personally meet him. Dave has a new Demon on order. I am told Chrysler will have a Demon on display.

We are fortunate to be the only GM company that Dave has a wholesale program with to do all the GM VIN door jamb decals from 1970 thru 1989. Dave is very well known in the Chrysler world as he holds the record for winning the Best of Show 3 times with 3 different Chrysler cars at the Chrysler Nationals!

The Hemi-Under-Glass car will also be there. If you aren’t familiar with this car, you might want to watch a segment from Jay Leno’s Garage on YouTube.

Here is a link to this exciting segment – when they actually crashed the car on the show. What could go wrong?

Jay Leno Goes 2,500 HP on 2 Wheels - Jay Leno’s Garage

My granddaughter Devyn, will be assisting me at both my seminars. I hope to see many of my Buick customers this coming weekend.

In case you’re wondering, I use a different size container for the M&Ms contest each day to avoid cheating!

BREAKING NEWS HURST SEMINAR SPEAKING TIMES -

This Friday I am speaking at 2 pm until 3:30 pm.

Saturday I am speaking at 4 pm until 5:30 pm.

The event runs both days 7 am until 6 pm.

WHAT WE OWE -

If you have ever bought a used car or even a new car from a car dealer, there is usually a small pink sheet that will list what the dealer still owes you among the various forms of paperwork. It may be a small part that was not available in time, or maybe a set of floor mats that they owe you. It also may simply be stamped “AS IS NO WARRANTY.”

PHOTO 1 - In my travels in junkyards I came across what I found to be sarcastic in nature, even though perhaps it was not meant to be. Notice the rubber stamped words “AS IS NO WARRANTY,” but also to the far right is the stamping GOOD LUCK.

REBUILT SHOW-QUALITY ALTERNATORS -

These alternators have become very good sellers for us since we have the proper size pulley for them and my source does each one personally using all new parts. Remember, we also offer having your original date stamped alternator rebuilt, if you want. I believe we are the only company that offers all these versions.

PHOTO 2 - We show two photos of a typical new 120 amp alternator alongside one that is 30 years old that we recently had rebuilt for a customer. See our part #7315, #7316, #7317, #7319 or #7705. We have every possible option available for either a stock 120 amp alternator or a 200 amp alternator. Our supplier has been a close friend of ours for over 25 years and has been doing this ever since I met him. Each one is fully tested. (I carry one in my Tahoe as a spare as it’s a special alternator because of the array of options in my Tahoe).

BUICK TRI-SHIELD EMBLEMS -

Some of you may be looking for sets of Buick tri-shield emblems for either a display board or for use on a center cap on your car or trailer. We have three different emblems available that we have removed from various Buicks in the junkyards.

PHOTO 3 - This photo shows the 3 different versions of Buick tri-shield emblems that we have. I only have one set of four of the version shown on the top row. These came off a late model LeSabre model. I have many sets of them available of the version in the middle. These come off early 2000 and up LeSabre models. I only have one set of the set shown at the bottom. These come off late-1980s Buick models. It is that version that I have on my Kirban-style wheels on my personal Turbo-T. See the Rare Parts section for diameter sizes and prices.

SPOOLFOOL DAMAGED REAR FILLER -

We recently had one of Spoolfools one-piece rear filler panels get slightly damaged in shipping. Here is a chance to get one at a discounted price. See the Rare Parts section for the price.

PHOTO 4 - We show several angles of the minor damage to this Spoolfool rear filler. Almost all the damage is to the one corner as shown. What may not be visible in the photo is along the one lip is also is a small hairline crack. Otherwise this Spoolfool rear filler is mint. It needs to have the fiberglass work done to repair it.

OUR CONNECTION WITH HURST -

From time to time we have written various stories on Hurst. With the upcoming first Hurst Nationals this coming weekend and being a speaker both Friday and Saturday, you could say I have come full circle with my involvement with Hurst.

It was 1962-1963 and my Dad had a printing business in Glenside, PA. I was 14-15 years old and my buddy and I would run two inserting machines for my Dad. Child labor laws did not exist in my family! My Dad did massive mailings for insurance companies. That was the method to advertise back then. To the consumer, it was known as “junk mail.”

Around the corner from my Dad’s shop was a small building where Hurst operated. Being an avid reader of “Car Craft” and “Hot Rod” magazines, I thought it was very unusual for a company that advertised in those magazines to be in my area and not in California, like most automotive companies of that time.

I would go over to the Hurst building and get Hurst decals for my school books.

Fast forward, I turned 16 having basically destroyed my first car with my road trip to New Mexico At one point I had a 1954 Ford coupe. Working a night shift at a Sinclair gas station, I installed a Hurst 3-speed shifter in my Ford with my limited skills. I am grateful Hurst made a huge shifter boot as I needed it to cover the huge hole I made in the floor as I tried to figure out where the hole had to be for the shifter! A few years later I saw my old Ford in a local junkyard.

Jump ahead to 1968, fresh out of Vietnam, and the GTO was the hot car to own. Within 30 days of getting home from Vietnam, I purchased a 1964 GTO hardtop 4-speed. Soon I was married to Eileen and our first apartment was within 2 miles of the now new Hurst plant in Warminster. It opened there in 1965.

My wife would land a job in the PR department at Hurst and drive the 1964 GTO to work. At the same time I had a 1950 Ford and a modified 1949 Olds Club coupe. I had Hurst make me a special handle for the shifter on my Olds Coupe. It had a 371 Olds V8 backed up with a worked 4-speed hydromatic transmission.

Fast forward to the mid-1970s, and I now had a towing business and one of my clients was the local Olds dealer. Any issues with the Hurst Olds Pace Cars that the executives drove at Hurst, I got the tow jobs.

I then started to get Hurst shifters rebuilt for GTO customers. I quickly discovered, if I took the shifter to Hurst in the morning with some Yum Yum donuts, within 2 hours I could pick up the rebuilt shifter and be able to ship it back to my customers that same day.

Around the late-1970s I started our GTO business and started to buy parts direct from Hurst.

I had a good thing going besides operating a towing business and buying GTOs.

The winds of change started to come in the mid-1980s when Mr. Gasket bought Hurst and was moving the entire operation to their Ohio location.

With the upcoming closing of Hurst in Warminster, I found myself going there almost every day buying as much of the older shifter parts and related material, signs, etc. I could afford from their various employees. I was not interested in the Mopar parts, only the GM items, a mistake I later regretted. I bought prototypes and sample displays. I was coming home with loads of parts almost daily.

I also became good friends with their Art Director, Bob Held. He was their Art Director for over 20 years. This was back when artwork was hand done. That is why today I think I can truthfully say I own the rarest Hurst collection of prototypes, artwork, and displays. I have over 50 different Hurst knobs. I have a silk Hurst banner from around 1964. I have the original artwork for the Hurst wheel. I have the Miss Hurst banner Linda Vaughn used and even the large T handle that was part of a huge display. I even have the gold-style Hurst cufflinks that the executives wore. I also have the small Hemi-Under-Glass model that sat on George Hurst’s desk. I even have the original blueprint for the building!

It’s been a fun ride accumulating my Hurst collection that someday will pass down to my son. In recent years I find myself giving seminars on Hurst to various car clubs. Hurst had the name in shifters, and no other aftermarket company has ever come close to the popularity of the Hurst shifter. Hurst secured accounts first with Pontiac and then later Oldsmobile, and Buick - a major accomplishment at the time. Hurst landed accounts with Ford and Chrysler as well. Chevrolet never did get on board and stuck with the Muncie shifter, from what I recall.

So, now you know my background and connection with Hurst. Never worked for them, but do know quite a bit of their history. I was at the right place at the right time.

Hope to see many of you at one of my seminars at Carlisle this coming weekend. You won’t be disappointed. They have almost 100 Hurst cars confirmed. The Hurst event is held at the Carlisle Expo Center, which is across the street from Gate 3.

I recently talked to Bill Campbell, the co-founder of Hurst. His daughter hopes to bring him to hear me speak. Bill came as a special guest to our first GTO Heaven event in 1988 at our old house. Bill is now 95 years old. He worked on the original “Jaws of Life” project that is still used today.

WE HAVE SOME NEAT NEW PARTS IN THE WORKS -

Cardone is still working on one project for us. As you read this, they have made another prototype for me to examine.

We are also working on a small rubber bushing kit that many of you will want. The problem is, the kit I bought that is supposed to be for our cars is not correct, so I have to hunt down some of the other rubber bushings. Watch for word on this soon. The projected price on this kit will be under $20 - a great value.

I have just worked out a deal on a unique GNX item that I am told I will have an exclusive on. It is something for your garage or man cave. I have seen one sample and it is pretty neat looking and will have a price tag of less than $100. I am supposed to receive 20 very soon. I am not sure if I can get anymore than the initial 20.

I have almost all the cost factors worked out will be another unique item for your garage or office. Not only is it an original Buick part, but it will light up and you will be able to personalize it specifically for you! I have already gathered up about 15 of the main parts from junkyards and my buddy across from our shop is working out the cost factor on making the bracket. It will hang on a wall. It will be LED lit using a 9 volt battery. The goal is to bring this to market under $125. This is an idea I came up with about 3 weeks ago while walking in one of the many junkyards I go to.

These are just a few of the things we have in the works over the next 2-3 weeks. Watch for updates, prices and photos soon. The GNX item will have a good demand, especially with a price tag of less than $100. I can’t imagine a GNX owner not wanting one of these.

I never have a shortage of ideas, especially since I have so many years of experience. It pays to have great connections in several different fields of interest.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

1984-1987 Buick Regal (Including Turbo Regal) -
GM FLUSH MOUNT KIT FOR AFTERMARKET RADIO

Some Turbo Regal owners may want to upgrade their radio to any of the various aftermarket radios available today.

Most of the radio mounting kits sold today for doing an aftermarket radio installation do not allow the radio to sit back in the factory bezel.

The end result is it looks tacky. This special mounting kit uses the factory radio side brackets which attach to the side of this mounting kit.

By using this method it allows any aftermarket radio/CD, etc. player to sit flush with the factory radio bezel. As the one photo shows it accepts two different size radio units, which will work with most Pioneer units as well as many of the other aftermarket brands.

You must have the factory brackets, which we show in the lower center photo. Those brackets do NOT come with the new kit.

This kit was made possible by one of our Turbo Regal customers who is in the radio installation business and has it in his personal Turbo-T.

See part #7803 if you want to purchase a complete Pioneer radio with the mounting kit included. That part number also shows you how it will look once installed in a Turbo Regal.

Photo on the top left shows all the pieces included in this kit.

Photo on the lower left shows the insert installed into the main housing, which you may use depending on the size of the radio you are installing.

Photo on the lower center shows the original radio brackets that you need to re-use from your stock radio to make this new mounting kit fit flush in the radio bezel opening. We do NOT include these brackets.

Photo on the right photo shows this kit installed on a Pioneer radio/CD player, so it sits flush in the radio bezel opening.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
SPEEDOMETER CABLE GROMMET
REPRODUCTION ALUMINUM BRACKET

Over time, the original speedometer cable grommet bracket can break, since it’s only plastic. This reproduction bracket is made in aluminum, so it will last.

It is the only part that holds the grommet in place on the firewall to secure the speedometer cable.

I do not know if cars with the digital dash had this bracket or not. Regular Regals did not use this bracket, from what I can determine. I am also not aware if the 1984 and 1985 Turbo Regals used it. It can be difficult to see because it’s somewhat hidden by the harness behind the engine, which is also held in place with a metal bracket.

I have no idea why Buick used a plastic bracket secured by two 7mm screws for this connection. Check this bracket on your car. There’s probably a good chance it is broken.

NOTE - You can paint this bracket semi-gloss black or satin black to match the original bracket.
Another excellent replacement for any engine restoration.

This new upgraded aluminum radiator is currently out of stock. We expect to have our next shipment before the end of July.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
UPGRADED ALUMINUM RADIATOR

Because of the age of these cars, the radiator has lost some of its efficiency. Also the factory core size is marginal at best.

These upgraded radiators are 100% brand new, and made by COLD-CASE, a division of Max Performance, who also owns Pypes Exhaust.

This new radiator is bare aluminum. It has two 1" tubes, which are bigger than stock. The core size is 1/4" wider and the end tanks are 1/4" wider.

This radiator has undergone several months of testing by Nick Micale in his car in Arizona.
The original radiator weighs 25.6 lbs, this radiator weighs 15.2 lbs. The overall weigh savings over the stock radiator is about 10 lbs.

This upgraded radiator is designed so it fits exactly like the factory radiator and accepts all the factory original oil and transmission coolant fittings. The factory radiator cap will also fit this radiator. The reproduction radiator top plate and the custom top plate will also fit.

Our first photo shows this new upgraded aluminum radiator. Our other photos show a comparison views of an original radiator and this new aluminum radiator.

NOTE - If you plan to paint the radiator, we highly recommend Eastwood’s Radiator Black 12 oz Satin Finish, part #10340Z @ $12.99 per can. A typical radiator requires 2 coats of paint. Normal engine paints are too thick for radiator use, which will interfere with heat transfer and block air flow over the cooling fins. Also, standard paint tends to flake off metal radiator tanks. The Radiator Black is specially formulated to solve these problems, will not interfere with heat transfer, and is heat resistant to 300°F.

NOTE - Shipping cost is based on an oversized package.

Another nice engine restoration item.

NOTE - This radiator is currently out of stock. The manufacturer expects to have the next batch ready in mid-July. If you would like to be called when radiators are back in stock, call Christina - 215-766-1611 x 0.

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged.
