06-14-2017 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 06-14-2017 -

RIP - JANACE CONLEY -

We were sadden to hear Janace Conley, devoted wife of Lawrence Conley, passed away Friday, June 9th, to pancreatic cancer.

Many of you will remember her over the years when she attended the various Turbo events with Lawrence and their famous teal green Turbo-powered car “TWEAKED.” She was always so outgoing and friendly with that southern Texas charm. Our prayers go out to Lawrence and his family.

They wrote a 13-page article for my book, “Kirban’s Guide to 1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regals.” If you have my book, but sure to look on page 333 for their performance ideas.

They shared their expertise and friendliness with our whole Turbo Buick community.

We found a great photo of Lawrence and Janace Conley, CONLEY’S PERFORMANCE PLUS, along with Lloyd Tarter (original owner of BOWLING GREEN CUSTOMS) on the left. It’s on the right in Photo 1.

RIP - ALFRED "TREY" CREASE III -

It is with much personal sadness to report that a long-time friend and former employee of ours, Trey Crease, passed away this past Monday afternoon of a massive heart attack.

Many of you old timers will remember him as owner of Zero-to-Sixty Performance. He was a vendor for a number of years at the yearly GS Nationals in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He was usually set up next to our vendor spots.

We will share special memories of Trey in next week's Inner Circle.

VALVE COVER DESK TOP LAMP UPDATE -

We now have all the details worked out so all the valve cover desk top lamps look the same.

To make this lamp even better than the prototype, I have made a bulk purchase of brand new chrome timing chain covers. The base on the prototype was a used 10-speed bike spocket. The new chrome timing chain cover will be the base of each new desk lamp. The end result is now the entire Turbo Regal valve cover lamp will look brand new.

It will ship needing only minor assembly and the easy-to follow directions will be included.

I will have one for display at the Castle/Kirban Lemont Illinois event at the end of this month. I hope to also have several of these desk lamps for sale at the event.

By buying a bulk purchase of chrome timing chain covers, we are able to keep the price the same. The price is $139.95 plus $15 shipping. This is a great bargain when compared to similar custom automotive lamps on various websites.

If you already contacted me about purchasing one of these lamps, we will be in touch with you in the next several days. If you want one from this initial batch that we are getting built, email me direct - [email protected]

Production of these cool Turbo Regal desk top valve cover lamps may become limited, depending on my ability to locate and buy factory original Turbo Regal valve covers at a reasonable price. We will issue a Letter of Credit for $40 for any set you send us. If you are attending the Castle/Kirban event later this month in Lemont, Illinois, please bring us any Turbo Regal valve covers for trade or cash.

PHOTO 1 - The photo on the left shows the new finished production Turbo Regal Valve Cover Desk Top Lamp. It features a factory original 1984-1987 Turbo Regal valve cover that has been powder-coated silver. A new AC Delco spark plug is on the end of the pull chain. The base is a chrome-plated GM V8 timing chain cover that has a rubber coating on the bottom to protect your table top. LED light strip is installed connected to a 9-volt battery. The overall height is approximately 14 inches. The photo on the right shows Lloyd Tarter on the left along with Lawrence and Janace Conley.

We already have our next unique item in the works. The idea came to me the other week while I was in one of the junkyards. It too will include LED lighting and you will be able to have it personalized!

Watch for updates on this new project later this summer.

OUR GRANDDAUGHTER DEVYN GRADUATES -

Last week we had the great opportunity to see our only granddaughter Devyn graduate from Quakertown High School. She was in the top 3% in her class. This August she starts college in the Schreyers Honors College program at Penn State main campus.

My wife found her Lower Moreland High School diploma. We were amazed to find Eileen and Devyn graduated on the exact same date - June 7th, 2017 and June 7th, 1967 - EXACTLY 50 years apart.

Eileen’s graduating class had less than 100 students. Devyn’s graduation class had just over 400. My graduation class, which was two years earlier from the same school as Eileen, was a week later in June of 1965. Like my wife’s class, we had less than 100 in our senior class. This fall Eileen and I will be attending her 50th High School Reunion. Since we both went to the same school, I know many of her classmates and it’s always a good time to get together.

PHOTO 2 - The top photo shows Devyn in front of their decorated custom-built 6-door F-650 Ford truck that Darrell built. The bottom left photo shows Devyn with her proud parents Darrell and Carrie. The bottom photo to the right shows me and Eileen with Devyn, equally proud of what she had accomplished. The photos were taken in Allentown, PA across the street from the PPL Center where the graduation ceremony took place last week. NOTE - The blue graduation stole signifies that she was in the Honor Society.

Devyn will be assisting me at both Hurst seminars in July at the Carlisle Hurst Nationals. We are all quite proud of her and her accomplishments.

FOR SALE - 2007 RANGE ROVER HSE MODEL -

This 2007 Range Rover caught my eye the other day as I was driving to work. Simply put, this vehicle is every bit as nice as my Chevy Tahoe. It is nicer than my Turbo-T. The care that the owner did is nothing short of remarkable. You could box the factory wheels and sell them for new they are that nice. The interior is mint, no wear on any of the control buttons. The driver’s seat shows minimal wear. It has no odors, no signs of any pets. The headlights shine. The engine is clean and dry. It virtually has every option, including 3 row black leather seats and triple sunroofs!

The miles show 144,000. The vehicle looks like it has maybe 40,000 on it. It is that nice. I know nothing about Range Rovers, other than the fact that when new it sold for over $75,000, from what I read. It’s V8 powered and has air suspension and brand new tires. All the manuals are in the glove box. It is dark grey with a perfect, and I mean absolutely perfect, body and paint.

The price is $9,800. If this perks anyone’s interest, email me - [email protected] - as I can provide more photos and information. It is located about 5 minutes from our office in Plumsteadville.

You could look at ten similar Range Rovers and none of them, with approximately the same miles on them, would measure up to the condition of this Range Rover. I know because every time I search for a used car to buy and keep, I end up looking at a dozen or more before I find one that is actually nice enough to buy.

PHOTO 3 - Shows 4 different photos of this remarkable 2007 Range Rover for sale for $9,800.

ORIGINAL BUICK DISPLAYS UPDATE -

Last week we showed photos of two unique Turbo Regal-related Buick displays we have in our personal collection. I forgot I have one other unique Buick dealer display. It may not be specifically Turbo Regal related, but it was probably used during the same time period, since it promoted the V6 Buick engine.

This unique Buick display stands about 4 feet tall. It promotes the V6 engine, which would eventually become turbo powered, and that we have all come to love and enjoy. I got this several years ago. I have never seen another one for sale. The fake block is made from some sort of foam, so it is light weight.

RIP VIC EDELBROCK -

This past weekend Vic Edelbrock passed away. He created one of the most recognized automotive aftermarket companies every muscle car owner is familiar with. I had the opportunity to meet Vic Eedelbrock personally about 8 years ago at one of the events I attended. See photo 4 below.

PHOTO 4 - The photo on the left shows this unique Buick display promoting the V6 Buick engine. The top middle photo shows a closeup of the sign that is at the top of this Buick display. The left middle photo shows a closeup of the fake V6 Buick engine block. I apologize for the photo as the space in my home office is cramped. The top right photo shows my Edelbrock baseball-style cap that Vic Edelbrock autographed for me in 2009 when I met him personally at a car event. The lower right photo is picture of Vice Edelbrock.

NEW PARTS FROM US -

We now carry the unique radio mounting bracket that will allow you to install almost any kind of aftermarket radio and keep it flush mounted in your dash opening. Many of the radio mounting brackets you buy do not position the radio properly in your dash. Many of them align the radio to stick out. This mounting bracket uses the factory brackets from your old radio, so your new radio will sit back in the dash like it should. These are now in stock. See New Parts section for more info.

MORE MEMORIES TURBO REGAL RELATED -

With all the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals we have sold, there is one instance where I did sell one 1987 Grand National hardtop 3 times. The first time I bought it Trey Crease and I traveled to Wheeling West Virginia and drove it back. A customer of mine worked at the dealership and called us about the car. The owner lived in North Carolina, but was friends with the West Virginia dealership. This car was absolutely mint. The original owner kept a small black book recording every expense and gas fill up.

I then sold it to a customer who lived in North Carolina. I thought this was a coincidence since the original owner lived in North Carolina. About a year later he called me back needing to sell the car. I said I was a buyer and took my truck and trailer down to North Carolina to buy it.

The next buyer lived about 15 minutes from me. Once again, this buyer needed to sell it about a year later so once again I purchased the car back!

The third buyer resided in Arizona so I figured this would be my last time I would be involved with selling this Grand National as I had a set rule that I would not travel past the Mississippi River for any car to buy. The cost factor of being on the road that many days, with food, gas, and motel expenses was just too much to absorb. I generally ate at good restaurants and stayed in very nice motels when I was picking up these cars.

A few years later, the Arizona owner needed to sell the Grand National and contacted me. I was able to get him a buyer who also resided in Arizona and simply made a commission on the sale. So, basically the same Grand National passed through my hands in person, 3 times and I sold it 4 times. That car was a record for me for selling the same car actually 4 times.

In each case, each owner kept it exactly the same and drove it very few miles over the space of several years. A true story.

UPDATE ON THE 1986-1987 TURBO REGAL UPGRADED ALUMINUM RADIATOR -

We will post in the Inner Circle when we have these radiators available and back in stock. Expected delivery is in late July. If you want one when they are available again in late July, you must call our office and reserve one with Christina 215-766-1611x 0. We would not charge your credit card until we can ship the unit. She would also contact you once they are available.

These are by far the best radiator for the money for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal application. Simply put this is a very nice unit with a price that can’t be beat. In some cases, it’s probably almost that much to repair your original radiator, which weighs 10 pounds more and would require major flushing to clean out the transmission and oil coolers.

Here is a link to this radiator on our website.

TIP FROM KIRBAN -

When in doubt as to what type of black paint to use on various suspension parts and under carriage parts, I always suggest satin black. That way it blends in better rather than standing out you paint something glossy black. Flat black is too dull. Again, this in my opinion based on what I have done over the years on various cars.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

KIRBAN SEMINAR/SWAP MEET TURBO REGAL EVENT - LEMONT, ILLINOIS -
Tuesday June 27th, 2017, 6 until 9 pm?

Paul has recently informed me that he will give everyone that brings a Turbo Regal to this event a FREE Silver Billet T-shirt. I will also be doing a mini No Reserve auction! This is a rare opportunity to hear one of my seminars in your area. Since I am speaking on Hurst later that week at the GTOAA National meet, I will also show you some of the very rare Hurst items and artwork that I have in my collection.

The location is Castle Performance, 220 River Street, Lemont, Illinois. Since I will be in Illinois as a speaker later that week I have arranged with Paul Castle and the local Buick GS Club to coordinate this event. Free pizza and drinks courtesy of the Chicagoland Chapter of the GSCA Club!

NOTE - If you are planning on attending this seminar at Castle Performance in Lemont, Illinois, please email - [email protected] so we have an idea how many people to expect.

I will have a specific gift for each attendee. I will have some tagged and bagged Turbo parts with me and the usual M&Ms contest. This should be a fun time.

I have a special guest that will also be attending. He has been making a certain Turbo Regal part for us for over 25 years. You probably have it on your Turbo Regal.

We will have a special gift for all attendees! Hope to see many of my Illinois customers there.

Paul and the local GS Club request you bring a lawn chair. Food and drinks will be provided. If you reside anywhere near Lemont, Illinois, we hope you can attend and bring your Turbo Regal. It’s also open to any muscle car. I would love to meet some of my customers that may have never been to the GS Nationals. This is a rare opportunity, since I don’t travel long distances much anymore.

NOTE - You can bring any cores- powermasters, turbos, or steering wheels - for a Letter of Credit for parts you may need for your car. It saves you shipping.

Mark the date on your calendar - Tuesday, June 27th, 2017.

UPDATE ON KIRBAN SEMINAR AT CASTLE’S SHOP LEMONT, ILLINOIS -

I already have the M&Ms counted for the contest! Paul and I will have a number of items to offer at our No Reserve auction. As long as the starting bid has been realized, the item will be sold. Paul informs me he has a lot of rare items he will be making available for this event. This event has no rain date. I am speaking two days later at the GTOAA National convention in Springfield, Illinois. The crown jewel of the No Reserve auction will be the go kart body personally signed by Molly at our 2007 Reunion event.

This is just one of the many items Paul and I will have at the No Reserve auction. Bring any parts you want to sell or trade. This event is already shaping up to be a pretty big event for a weekday event.

THE VERY LATEST UPDATE ON CASTLE/KIRBAN LEMONT ILLINOIS EVENT –

When Paul and I first discussed me coming to do a mini seminar, I envisioned maybe we would get 15 to 20 people on a Tuesday night.

As of this past Sunday Paul says the count is now over 50 planning to attend! We have people coming from Indiana, Wisconsin and even Tennessee! The event is open to anyone, you don’t need to have a Turbo Regal as most of us can appreciate any U.S. produced muscle car. I will also talk briefly and show some of the Hurst items I have that are over 40 years old. Hurst products cross over to all the various U.S. muscle cars from the sixties and up.

Since I am speaking 2 days later on Hurst History at the GTOAA Nats, I will have original Hurst artwork and even artwork that the art director Bob Held did in art school in 1938. He was the art director for over 20 years at Hurst and did all the advertising and Hurst decals during the 1960s and 1970s that many of you will recognize.

Those that are coming are in for a rare treat. Although the time is listed 6 pm until 9 pm with such a crowd expected it will run past 9 pm for sure. We already heard from several people that plan to cut work that day to make the trip. We will also have an assortment of our used tagged and bagged parts and new parts for sale.

Be sure to bring any parts you want to sell or trade. We need powermaster cores, steering wheel cores, stock turbo cores, and now we need original 1984-1987 Turbo Regal valve covers.
I am a possible buyer for any nice parts you no longer need or want. Bring your wallet as both Paul and I will have parts for sale as well as conducting a very unusual No Reserve Auction.

I will have a special gift for each attendee. Paul will have a Silver Bullet T-shirt for each Turbo owner. You must email Paul so we have an accurate count. Pizza and drinks will be provided. You supply a chair to sit on. His email is - [email protected]

Castle has contacted a nearby motel called Extended America. It is less than 3 miles away in nearby Darien, Illinois. You can contact them direct to get a special room rate, if you plan to stay overnight. Use the name “Kirban/Chicago Show” to get the special room rate. Their phone number is 630-985-4706. The address is 2345 Sokol Court, Darien, Illinois 60561. I am told Lemont is a historic little town. I confess I have never been to Lemont, Illinois. This will be my first time. Although back in 1963 I did travel down nearby Route 66 when I ran away from home.

JULY 14-16, 2017
Carlisle Fairgrounds, Carlisle, PA

This year’s Chrysler event has a special all new Hurst Nationals July 14th and 15th in conjunction with the Chrysler Nationals. I have been asked to conduct a seminar on Hurst both days, July 14th and 15th. The location of my seminars as well as the other seminars is held just off the grounds from Gate 3 at the Carlisle Expo Center. They have not yet told me my speaking times.

My granddaughter, Devyn hopes to go with me to help. With Chrysler introducing the Demon this April, my guess is they will have several Demons on display at Carlisle. Hope to see some of my customers at this event. I am as well versed with early Hurst history as I am with Turbo Regals.

As with all my seminars, I will be doing a M&Ms contest in honor of my parents. The Don Garlits autographed connecting rod will make a nice prize!

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

1984-1987 Buick Regal (Including Turbo Regal) -
GM FLUSH MOUNT KIT FOR AFTERMARKET RADIO

Some Turbo Regal owners may want to upgrade their radio to any of the various aftermarket radios available today.

Most of the radio mounting kits sold today for doing an aftermarket radio installation do not allow the radio to sit back in the factory bezel.

The end result is it looks tacky. This special mounting kit uses the factory radio side brackets which attach to the side of this mounting kit.

By using this method it allows any aftermarket radio/CD, etc. player to sit flush with the factory radio bezel. As the one photo shows it accepts two different size radio units, which will work with most Pioneer units as well as many of the other aftermarket brands.

You must have the factory brackets, which we show in the lower center photo. Those brackets do NOT come with the new kit.

This kit was made possible by one of our Turbo Regal customers who is in the radio installation business and has it in his personal Turbo-T.

See part #7803 if you want to purchase a complete Pioneer radio with the mounting kit included. That part number also shows you how it will look once installed in a Turbo Regal.

Photo on the top left shows all the pieces included in this kit.

Photo on the lower left shows the insert installed into the main housing, which you may use depending on the size of the radio you are installing.

Photo on the lower center shows the original radio brackets that you need to re-use from your stock radio to make this new mounting kit fit flush in the radio bezel opening. We do NOT include these brackets.

Photo on the right photo shows this kit installed on a Pioneer radio/CD player, so it sits flush in the radio bezel opening.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
SPEEDOMETER CABLE GROMMET
REPRODUCTION ALUMINUM BRACKET

Over time, the original speedometer cable grommet bracket can break, since it’s only plastic. This reproduction bracket is made in aluminum, so it will last.

It is the only part that holds the grommet in place on the firewall to secure the speedometer cable.

I do not know if cars with the digital dash had this bracket or not. Regular Regals did not use this bracket, from what I can determine. I am also not aware if the 1984 and 1985 Turbo Regals used it. It can be difficult to see because it’s somewhat hidden by the harness behind the engine, which is also held in place with a metal bracket.

I have no idea why Buick used a plastic bracket secured by two 7mm screws for this connection. Check this bracket on your car. There’s probably a good chance it is broken.

NOTE - You can paint this bracket semi-gloss black or satin black to match the original bracket.
Another excellent replacement for any engine restoration.

UPGRADED ALUMINUM RADIATOR

Because of the age of these cars, the radiator has lost some of its efficency. Also the factory core size is marginal at best.

These upgraded radiators are 100% brand new, and made by COLD-CASE, a division of Max Performance, who also owns Pypes Exhaust.

This new radiator is bare aluminum. It has two 1" tubes, which are bigger than stock. The core size is 1/4" wider and the end tanks are 1/4" wider.

This radiator has undergone several months of testing by Nick Micale in his car in Arizona.
The original radiator weighs 25.6 lbs, this radiator weighs 15.2 lbs. The overall weigh savings over the stock radiator is about 10 lbs.

This upgraded radiator is designed so it fits exactly like the factory radiator and accepts all the factory original oil and transmission coolant fittings. The factory radiator cap will also fit this radiator. The reproduction radiator top plate and the custom top plate will also fit.

Our first photo shows this new upgraded aluminum radiator. Our other photos show a comparison views of an original radiator and this new aluminum radiator.

NOTE - If you plan to paint the radiator, we highly recommend Eastwood’s Radiator Black 12 oz Satin Finish, part #10340Z @ $12.99 per can. A typical radiator requires 2 coats of paint. Normal engine paints are too thick for radiator use, which will interfere with heat transfer and block air flow over the cooling fins. Also, standard paint tends to flake off metal radiator tanks. The Radiator Black is specially formulated to solve these problems, will not interfere with heat transfer, and is heat resistant to 300°F.

NOTE - Shipping cost is based on an oversized package.

Another nice engine restoration item.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
CUSTOM RADIATOR TOP PLATE & HARDWARE

In many cases, the original metal radiator top plate that holds the top of the radiator and secures the housing for the electric fan may be rusted or bent.

This radiator top plate is unique to the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals, making it difficult to find a nice used one today.

This radiator top plate is made by Spoolfool but does not look like the stock original steel radiator top plate. It is fiberglass and not metal. It attaches the same way, however the top surface is smooth. This gives it a more custom look.

Each one is done in black gelcoat polished to a high gloss shine. It weighs only 1 pound versus 3 pounds for the metal plate. It saves a small amount of weight, but more importantly, it will never rust!

It comes with 5 powder-coated black bolts, which are the correct size for this plate, and easy-to-follow directions.

NOTE - Our first picture show this new CUSTOM Radiator Top Plate and Hardware, #7776. Our second photo shows the stock Reproduction Radiator Top Plate & Hardware, #7774. The second photo also shows the placement of this plate in the lower photos.

A nice finishing touch for under the hood.

This high-quality reproduction steel dip stick tube has the correct black EDP coating on it.

This reproduction is the correct replacement for GM part #25525746, which has not been available from GM for several years.

An excellent replacement item for any engine restoration.

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING -

Because of my upcoming trip to Illinois we will not list any Rare Parts in the next 2 week’s Inner Circles. I should have a very good selection of parts featured after I return as I am meeting up with some customers that have parts they want to sell me.
