“FORDS AT CARLISLE” EVENT CONTINUED -

One of the most interesting cars I spotted at Fords at Carlisle event was a pink Mustang. At first I thought it was either a Playboy Bunny car or a Mary Kay car. I know Playboy did at least one AMC car for the Playmate of the Year in 1968. Also, almost daily in my area I see a pink late-model Cadillac that has a Mary Kay decal on the back.

Upon closer examination this pink Mustang was neither. It turns out this was a factory color called “Dusk Rose” in 1967 for Ford. Not exactly a color most buyers would choose!

When the owners were restoring this Mustang, they researched the history. At the time they bought the car, it was red. In 1967 Ford produced 472,209 Mustangs! Only 318 were painted Dusk Rose! Of that number, 261 had black standard bucket seats. Only 181 of them had an AM radio. Narrowing it down even further, only 174 had white sidewall rayon tires.

Fords owners have an option to research the rarity of their Ford. Corvette and Camaro owners can also figure out production numbers. Unfortunately, Buick owners (notably Turbo Regal owners) don’t have that option or benefit. At best you can make an educated guess and nobody can prove you are right or wrong.

PHOTO 1 - The left photo shows the Dusk Rose 1967 Mustang. The photo to the right shows part of the print out they got from Marti Auto Works that is licensed by Ford to make these reports available. They can do any Ford production vehicle from 1967-2007. They can even tell you the dealer that sold the car and what day it sold, and even what day it was built. It’s a shame this company only does Ford products.

When I was writing my first book, I was constantly contacting my one inside source at Buick and he would get me production figures on some of my questions as time permitted. What added to the confusion was in 1987 the Turbo Package could also be ordered in a Regal Limited, which had a different VIN number format.

Having attended the GS Nationals every year since 1988 and having bought and sold just over 320 of the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals, I have an opinion as to which are the rare colors, both for the exterior and interior.

Here are my opinions on the rare solid exterior colors on the 1987 Turbo Regals. In no particular order: Cream Beige code 54, Light Sage Metallic code 43, Light blue Metallic code 25, Light Brown Metallic code 58, and Brown Metallic code 62.

They had a total of 11 available solid exterior colors in 1987 for the Regals. Of these colors I don’t recall ever owning a beige or brown Turbo-T. I have owned one light blue, one light brown and two light sage metallic Regals out of those 320-plus Turbo Regals. Again, I am referring to solid exterior colors only related to the 1987 Turbo-T Regals.

The most popular solid exterior colors would be black because of the Grand National production and, of course, white. Again, this is merely my opinion.

Of the rare colors I have listed, it seems strange that you seldom see a light blue Turbo-T. Most of the blue ones you see are dark blue, which I have had a few. I distinctly remember the only light blue Regal I had years ago.

What even complicates production figures more is the fact in 1987 you could have a Chrome Package or the optional WO2 Sport Package (also known as the Blackout Package.)

LIGHT BLUE TURBO-T -

It was probably over a dozen years ago when we lived in Furlong. I had several Turbo Regals for sale at the same time.

At the time, I had a customer drive up from one of the southern states specifically to buy a Grand National. It must have been during the winter as I had several cars stored at my neighbor’s house, since they spent their winters in Naples, Florida. When I stored cars on their driveway, it made it look like people were home!

I remember taking my potential buyer to my neighbor’s house to look at a Grand National. Alongside the Grand National, I had this light blue Turbo-T with matching blue interior. The customer fell in love with the blue Turbo-T and ended up buying it instead of the Grand National. A True Story.

I found a copy of my original flyer of when I had the two different sage metallic Turbo-Ts for sale. One was a regular Turbo-T with matching sage color bench seat interior. I remember the seller drove it down from New York City for me to purchase a week after the 911 event.

The other one was a rare Limited model that was a one owner and had won many trophies over the years. The seller gave me 28 trophies with the car when I bought it out of near Brook Park, Ohio. I would later sell it to the next owner who lived probably 45 minutes from where I bought it!

PHOTO 2 - The photo on the left shows the flyer for the regular bench seat Regal in the sage metallic color. The photo on the right shows the flyer for the award winning Turbo-T Limited in sage metallic that we purchased.

PHOTO 3 - The photo shows the flyer for the light brown Turbo-T we also owned. According to my write up, this car had a factory GNX rear seat brace in it from new and it also had the WO2 Black-out Package option. Like the sage metallic Limited that won many trophies, this car took first place at the GS Nationals, getting 99 points out of 100. Ironically, this car had 24,300 actual miles and the award winning sage metallic Limited had 24,700 miles!

One other note, I ended up buying a WE4 from the same seller that I bought the light brown Turbo-T from too. This car came out of Tennessee and I ended up selling it locally.

Every car I sold has a story. The problem is remembering the stories!

Next week we will cover more about the exterior colors and the two-tone combinations Buick offered on the Turbo-Ts in 1987.

UNUSUAL FIND -

I made an unusual find the other week at one of the junkyards. Recently, I discovered something I had never come across before in a 1987 Oldsmobile - a pocket-size Rand McNally Road Atlas. It even has the Oldsmobile logo on the cover.

For you very young owners, paper maps are something gas stations would sell or you would buy at a store before GPS, etc. This was back when gas was less than 50 cents per gallon.

PHOTO 4 - The photo on the left shows the pocket-size Oldsmobile Road Atlas by Rand McNally copyright 1987. The photo on the left shows a typical page, the state of Pennsylvania. In all my searching, I have never seen another one like it… nor any pocket-size map for any other GM car. I wonder if just Oldsmobile offered the pocket-size maps? (See the Rare Parts Listing)

JIM ED BROWN PASSED AWAY LAST WEEK -

Jim Ed Brown - For those that are not near my age, you may not know that name. In the late summer of 1959, Jim and his two sisters Bonnie and Maxie had the #1 song both on the country charts and Billboard Hot 100 charts. The title of the song was “The Three Bells.”

After recording several years with Bonnie and Maxie, he then had a successful solo career, followed by teaming up with Helen Cornelius. They scored even more country hit records. It’s not often a singer can have success three different times.

Jim Ed Brown was 81 years old.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
CONVERSION VACUUM BRAKE BOOSTER KIT with New Correct Size PIN for the Stock Brake Pedal

This is another option to consider if you have a fairly stock 1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal and want to switch from the original powermaster brake system.

This kit comes complete with everything you need as shown. This kit is very similar to Part #7625 however, it does not include a factory vacuum brake pedal. Instead we include a correct size machined pin that needs to be welded to the original stock brake pedal. Directions showing proper measurements come with it, so this machined pin can be done by a welder on the original brake pedal rod.

It comes with a REBUILT Cardone brake booster and a BRAND new master cylinder. The booster has a 9" diameter. The master cylinder and vacuum booster in this kit are exactly what GM used in 1986-1987 on a non-Turbo Regal application.

There are no clearance issues with this unit and the stock remote power steering reservoir.

It also comes with our new vacuum block with gasket and hardware. It has the vacuum port similar to what GM used on the 1989 Turbo Trans Am. We also include 2 feet of vacuum hose and our new reproduction gasket to firewall.

This booster kit uses the same factory holes in the firewall as the powermaster.

Since nothing gets cut or drilled related to the original powermaster, the original powermaster can be re-used should you want to convert back to the factory set up at a later date. However, you would need to acquire a brake pedal for a Turbo Regal to have it function properly.

We highly recommend installation be done by a qualified mechanic, since you have to properly bleed the brakes and need to weld the new brake pedal pin to the factory pedal rod. You also have to cut off the original pin from the brake pedal rod. Make sure the system is operating properly under all conditions.

Remember, your best option is always to stay with the factory GM powermaster brake system. This unit is only to be used with a stock or a fairly stock Turbo Regal. A modified engine or one with a performance cam would cause vacuum levels to be greatly reduced, which could cause braking problems. One possible solution would be to purchase an additional vacuum canister to retain proper vacuum levels from Summit or Jegs.

When purchasing this kit, you may also want to purchase Part #7218, Stainless Braided Brake Hoses, as these will improve the stopping ability.

For our rebuilt powermaster brake unit, See our Part #7021 Rebuilt Powermaster Brake Unit.
However, if you have a STOCK engine, there is adequate vacuum to switch over to a vacuum brake system. We have another option: Our Part #7625 - Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with vacuum brake pedal.

The difference between #7625 and this kit #7679, is that this kit comes with the correct pin instead of a vacuum brake pedal.

NOTE - A vacuum brake system is NOT recommended for a Turbo Regal with a modified engine or one with a performance cam because vacuum levels are greatly reduced, which could cause braking problems.

NOTE - Be sure to check out the other options we offer for converting the Turbo Regal brake system - Part #7625 Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with Vacuum Brake Pedal, Part #7617 Hydro-Boost Conversion Kit, or #7618 HYDRATECH Hydro-Boost System conversion. Related parts to consider are #7218 Stainless Braided Brake Hoses and #7021 Rebuilt Powermaster Brake Unit.

NOTE - We recommend installation be done by a qualified auto mechanic. Welding is required.

7679 - 1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal - Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with New Correct Size PIN for the Stock Brake Pedal - $329.95

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
CUSTOM-MADE DRIVER’S SIDE POWDER-COATED BLACK RELAY COVER

The part GM forgot... This 1986-1987 Turbo Regal custom-made driver's side powder-coated black relay cover is cut exactly like the cover GM used on the passenger's side fender that shields the relays from moisture.

Although GM never made one, we have had this custom-made as a matching cover for the driver's side relays... this cover is a must for covering these three relays. Remember, moisture can cause critical failure of the fan delay relay and eventually kill the battery since the fan delay relay is wired directly to the battery. The fan delay relay is not a sealed unit, so anything you can do to keep moisture out of the unit is important.

Once installed this custom-made cover looks factory. The relay cover is powdered-coated in satin black to closely match the relay cover on the passenger’s side inner fender. Cover is easy to install and comes complete with two mounting screws.

NOTE - These covers will NOT fit a GNX.

Another nice item to enhance your engine compartment.

1984-1987 Buick Regal -
Reproduction 3-PIECE and 1-PIECE REAR SPOILERS

These reproduction 3-Piece and 1-Piece Rear Spoilers fit all two-door Regal models from 1984 through the 1987 Regal models, including all the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals.

These reproduction spoilers are made by Spoolfool Productions, which also makes the popular one-piece rear fillers and two-piece front fillers. The same high quality can be seen in these two versions of rear spoilers, which are made in the USA using hand laid fiberglass in gloss black gelcoat. Due to the nature of these materials, small imperfections; pits, scratches, air bubbles, etc. are to be expected and are normal for this type of product.

The gelcoat is meant to be painted over, however, many customers are happy with the way they look right out of the box.

Each spoiler comes with mounting screws.

Spoilers are ready to install. Some holes may need to be slightly elongated, as every car is unique from the factory.

The three-piece rear spoiler is an exact match to the original GM Grand National rear spoiler.

The one-piece rear spoiler simply attaches to the trunk lid and over laps both of the rear quarter panel corners. This is similar to the Monte Carlo factory rear deck spoiler.

We also have another 1984-1987 Regal - Reproduction Fiberglass 3-piece Rear Spoiler, #6694

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
