STEVEN DOVE BOOKS -

Long-time customers will recall the books Steven Dove wrote in the 1990s on the Turbo Regals. We used to sell them for many years. I recently got a call from Jim Burek out of Texas. He actually worked for a time for Poston Enterprises and contributed to one of the GS books for Steven Dove. He recently came across a quantity of the two books pertaining to the Turbo Regals that Steven Dove wrote that we use to sell. We made a deal and bought all of them. It amounts to less than 100 copies of each. Once they are gone there are no more copies to be had that I am aware of.

See the New Products section of this Inner Circle for more details. We have a special sale price if you buy both books. Unfortunately, Steven Dove was killed in a car accident several years ago. We are mentioned under the acknowledgements in the Guide to Buick 3.8 Turbo V-6 book, also known as the GN “Facts and Figures Book II.” These are two great books to have and unlikely to be reprinted ever again.

PHOTO 1 - The first photo shows the Power Pac Buick - Performance and Restoration Tips. It covers many of the early pioneers that built some impressive Turbo Regals for racing. The second photo starts with the 1978 Turbo engine and includes many of the Service Bulletins related to the Turbo Regals.

RARE COLORS ON 1987 TURBO REGALS -

Last week we touched briefly on the solid colors that Buick offered on the Turbo Regals and gave our opinion on the rarest colors from that batch of 11 solid colors.

I failed to mention buyers had another option for exterior colors. The four versions I am referring to are the two-tone combinations. These would be dark blue/light blue, grey/silver, brown/light brown, and dark red/rosewood (Rosewood is a light red.) In my opinion, the rare combination of those colors would be the brown/light brown combination. Over the years, I have had at least one of each of the other three combinations. The most popular one in my opinion would be the gray/silver.

The other possible exterior paint option (and probably the most overlooked color) and is the rarest of rare. I am not sure GM still offers it today, but you could order a special solid color of your choice on a Turbo Regal. This was not offered on a Grand National. It was offered on the Turbo-T or Turbo-T Limited or any other regular Buick. You could have chosen any available GM solid color from 1987.

I think in the 1960s ordering a special order solid color was more popular. For example, the 1967 GTO had a Tiger gold color, which basically was a Hurst color. I would venture a guess and say this special order color would have found its way on other GM muscle cars. The trunk ID code for a special color is “D83” and the price was a mere $200. I would like to hear from anyone that has that code on their car’s trunk label.

Ironically, this past Saturday at the Pypes & Max Performance car show I saw an extremely rare color 1999 Pontiac Trans Am. This medium blue metallic color was only offered one year and the owner claims fewer than 200 were painted this color. This car was a real eye catcher since it was in show condition and stood out among all the other Pontiac Trans Ams. The car had the five spoke chrome wheels and grey leather interior. It was absolutely stunning.

The car is for sale. The first owner was a woman who simply drove it to work. The car has no paint work, is 100% stock, and PA inspected. The actual mileage is 92,000. Car easily would pass for having far less miles on it. The rear end pinion seal was replaced and it has a new fuel pump. Everything works. Car has LS1 motor, automatic with T-Tops.

Car is located near York, Pennsylvania. The seller is a hard core Pontiac collector. The only reason he is selling it is because he has a GTO he wants to restore. The price is $10,500. This is an extremely nice example and very rare. I had never seen a Trans Am this color. This is a Kirban quality car!

PHOTO 2 - We show four views of this medium blue metallic 1999 Pontiac Trans Am. The car was getting a lot of interest at the show and may already be sold. If interested, email me for more information - [email protected] He lives in a small town about 15 minutes west of York, Pennsylvania.

PYPES & MAX PERFORMANCE 5TH ANNUAL CAR SHOW -

With the threat of rain, this event had about 250-275 cars instead of 500-plus as in years past. Weather is always the one unpredictable factor when planning a car show event. I got to meet a lot of my old-time friends from my GTO days.

I have been writing an article every month for the last two years for “The Legend,” which is the monthly publication for the GTO National club. They have over 3,500 members.

PHOTO 3 - One of the most impressive cars I saw at the event was this 1953-1954 vintage Studebaker. We show four views of this car. When was the last time you saw cast valve covers with the word Studebaker on them? I can only guess how many years went into building this car. The body parts alone would be difficult to find.

BACK TRACKING -

Back tracking to last week’s Inner Circle, I found a photo of the only light blue 1987 Turbo-T car I owned. I had completely forgotten that it had the rare astroroof option! This car was all original.

PHOTO 4 - The photo on the left shows the ultra rare light blue Turbo-T we sold years ago. Notice the Grand National behind it that the buyer originally came to buy! The photo on the right shows our personal Turbo-T Limited after my son fixed it from the accident with the deer. It was silver with the WO2 black-out option fitted with the Kirban-style GNX 16 by 8 wheels. I think I originally gave a set of M & A Casting aluminum heads and $3,500 for this car back around 1990-1991. This car was my second test car that I licensed and drove.

THIRD TIME IS A CHARM -

“The third time is a charm” is a saying you hear from time to time. Last week I hit my third deer.

The first time was about 18 years ago when I hit one with my silver Turbo-T Limited. That hit killed the deer and took out the front header, bumper and grille of my Turbo-T Limited.

Kill number two happened a few years later and that time I did it with a 1986 BMW 325es model. Again, killed the deer and took out the grille header and front bumper.

The third time the deer ran into the front left corner of my 2001 Audi A4. It busted the grille and popped the front fascia out of position. Fortunately, I was going slow enough that the deer did not break one of those high dollar headlights! The deer survived and probably only got a severe headache!

and Guide to 1978-1987 Buick Grand National, T-Type and GNX “THE FACTS & FIGURES BOOK - SERIES #II” Book

“The Power Pac Buick Performance and Restoration Tips” book by Steven L. Dove covers the popular Buick Turbo Regals; Grand Nationals, T-Types, Turbo-Ts, and GNXs. It was published in 1998.

The book measures 6" x 9", has 230 pages and includes eight chapters of information. One chapter highlights all the major players with fast Turbo Regals from Marka Gallina to Kenny Duttweiler. Another chapter covers transmission upgrades by Art Carr. That same chapter includes tidbits on getting your turbo car to run in the 11’s and 12’s.

A later chapter covers restoration and care of your Turbo Regal. There is a tech talk section with John Craig on turbo upgrades and a chapter on suspension and brake upgrades. Another chapter deals with all the specifications with quick data information covering all Turbo Regals from 1982 through 1987, including the GNX.

The “Guide to 1978-1987 Buick Grand National, T-Type and GNX - FACTS & FIGURES BOOK - SERIES #II” covers the history of the Buick Regal from 1978 through 1987. It has many pictures and shows actual Service Bulletins covering the Turbo Regals from GM. Very informative with many pictures and illustrations. It measures 6" x 9" and has 260+ pages, and was published in 1992.

A great additions to your Buick library of information.

1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
CONVERSION VACUUM BRAKE BOOSTER KIT with New Correct Size PIN for the Stock Brake Pedal

This is another option to consider if you have a fairly stock 1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal and want to switch from the original powermaster brake system.

This kit comes complete with everything you need as shown. This kit is very similar to Part #7625 however, it does not include a factory vacuum brake pedal. Instead we include a correct size machined pin that needs to be welded to the original stock brake pedal. Directions showing proper measurements come with it, so this machined pin can be done by a welder on the original brake pedal rod.

It comes with a REBUILT Cardone brake booster and a BRAND new master cylinder. The booster has a 9" diameter. The master cylinder and vacuum booster in this kit are exactly what GM used in 1986-1987 on a non-Turbo Regal application.

There are no clearance issues with this unit and the stock remote power steering reservoir.

It also comes with our new vacuum block with gasket and hardware. It has the vacuum port similar to what GM used on the 1989 Turbo Trans Am. We also include 2 feet of vacuum hose and our new reproduction gasket to firewall.

This booster kit uses the same factory holes in the firewall as the powermaster.

Since nothing gets cut or drilled related to the original powermaster, the original powermaster can be re-used should you want to convert back to the factory set up at a later date. However, you would need to acquire a brake pedal for a Turbo Regal to have it function properly.

We highly recommend installation be done by a qualified mechanic, since you have to properly bleed the brakes and need to weld the new brake pedal pin to the factory pedal rod. You also have to cut off the original pin from the brake pedal rod. Make sure the system is operating properly under all conditions.

Remember, your best option is always to stay with the factory GM powermaster brake system. This unit is only to be used with a stock or a fairly stock Turbo Regal. A modified engine or one with a performance cam would cause vacuum levels to be greatly reduced, which could cause braking problems. One possible solution would be to purchase an additional vacuum canister to retain proper vacuum levels from Summit or Jegs.

When purchasing this kit, you may also want to purchase Part #7218, Stainless Braided Brake Hoses, as these will improve the stopping ability.

For our rebuilt powermaster brake unit, See our Part #7021 Rebuilt Powermaster Brake Unit.
However, if you have a STOCK engine, there is adequate vacuum to switch over to a vacuum brake system. We have another option: Our Part #7625 - Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with vacuum brake pedal.

The difference between #7625 and this kit #7679, is that this kit comes with the correct pin instead of a vacuum brake pedal.

NOTE - A vacuum brake system is NOT recommended for a Turbo Regal with a modified engine or one with a performance cam because vacuum levels are greatly reduced, which could cause braking problems.

NOTE - Be sure to check out the other options we offer for converting the Turbo Regal brake system - Part #7625 Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with Vacuum Brake Pedal, Part #7617 Hydro-Boost Conversion Kit, or #7618 HYDRATECH Hydro-Boost System conversion. Related parts to consider are #7218 Stainless Braided Brake Hoses and #7021 Rebuilt Powermaster Brake Unit.

NOTE - We recommend installation be done by a qualified auto mechanic. Welding is required.

7679 - 1985-1987 Buick Turbo Regal - Conversion Vacuum Brake Booster Kit with New Correct Size PIN for the Stock Brake Pedal - $329.95

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
CUSTOM-MADE DRIVER’S SIDE POWDER-COATED BLACK RELAY COVER

The part GM forgot... This 1986-1987 Turbo Regal custom-made driver's side powder-coated black relay cover is cut exactly like the cover GM used on the passenger's side fender that shields the relays from moisture.

Although GM never made one, we have had this custom-made as a matching cover for the driver's side relays... this cover is a must for covering these three relays. Remember, moisture can cause critical failure of the fan delay relay and eventually kill the battery since the fan delay relay is wired directly to the battery. The fan delay relay is not a sealed unit, so anything you can do to keep moisture out of the unit is important.

Once installed this custom-made cover looks factory. The relay cover is powdered-coated in satin black to closely match the relay cover on the passenger’s side inner fender. Cover is easy to install and comes complete with two mounting screws.

NOTE - These covers will NOT fit a GNX.

Another nice item to enhance your engine compartment.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer… If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.
