AMERICAN MUSCLE CAR MAGAZINE FROM THE UK –

As we have mentioned previously we have a customer in the UK, Ian Reeves, who owns one of our Grand Nationals. He recently sent me several copies of the popular “Classic America” car magazine. This is the #1 selling magazine for 30 years covering the American Muscle car scene in the UK. A slick looking full-color magazine that runs over 130 pages.

This is a very impressive magazine, especially today since many magazines on now only the internet. What I found interesting is in one article an individual actually bought and restored General Eisenhower’s personal Jeep that he used in World War II. Although I can’t figure out the price values in U.S. dollars, some of the stories I found quite interesting.

Collectors of American cars, especially American Muscle cars, are limited on what they can find in the UK.

PHOTO 1 - I show 3 recent copies of “Classic American” magazines from the UK. It seems odd the magazine is simply titled “Classic American” rather than “Classic American Cars.”

AUTOMOTIVE ANNIVERSARY COLLECTABLES –

Other things I collect are various special emblems that denote some sort of automotive anniversary. The most recent one I bought honors the 100th Anniversary of Dodge, 1914-2014. Ironically, I saw my very first 100th Dodge Anniversary emblems on a Dodge Challenger just the other day, so I ordered one. Even though it is dated 2014, I never saw one until the other day!

PHOTO 2 – We show 5 unique, new, various automotive anniversary emblems. The top left emblem is from Dodge’s 100th Birthday, 1914-2014. The middle one denotes the last 500 Oldsmobiles produced and says, “Since 1897.” The lower left emblem is the 50th Anniversary for a GM car model (I can’t recall what it is from). The top right emblem is for the 427 Chevy engine and merely states anniversary so I do not know what year it is from. Last, but not least, the lower right emblem is Chevy’s 100th Anniversary alloy wheel center cap. Going by memory, I think this center cap appeared on a Corvette model.

Each of these 5 emblems represents an automotive anniversary of some sort. They are fairly cheap to buy if they are fairly new. Yet possibly in years to come, some of these anniversary emblems may become valuable. It’s just hard to say which ones! You never know.

A LITTLE MINI CONTEST –

Here’s our next little mini contest - See Photo 3 below.

This past Sunday I met up with this lady who had recently sold a relative’s homestead that she had been cleaning out for the last several months. On the property was an unfinished huge pole building that was probably the length of a football field. It was scattered with various items, 90% of the stuff was “dumpster” material.

I was told the relative had some old cars parts, which is why I was interested. Unfortunately, most of the car parts were Ford related and engine parts that held little interest to me. Instead I found some motorcycle parts that appeared to be in new condition, so I figured I would gamble on a few.

I also bought what I show in Photo 3 below. I am completely baffled as to what this is and what it goes to. My best guess is some sort of a piece of a boat?

PHOTO 3 – I show several views of this fiberglass part. It appears to be brand new. It has what appears to be a third brake light attached to the lip area at the one end. On the underside is a black plastic knob, which when turned, can open up each hatch. The small shocks no longer hold the hatch cover open. I also have what appears to be a foam-like black cushion that I believe is part of it. The only emblem shows what looks like a UK flag and it is smaller than a thumb print on the front top area. There are no other wording or label on the part. The person I bought this from, along with motorcycle parts, had no idea what it is for either.

It weighs maybe 35-40 lbs and is basically about 4-foot wide by approximately 3-foot long.

To be the winner, you need to email me proof of exactly what it is called and exactly what year, model and whatever it fits. The first correct emailed answer will get a special prize.

NOTE - No entry will be eligible until after 3:30 eastern time TODAY, Wednesday, June 26, 2019, so subscribers have first opportunity. My email is [email protected] Good luck players. In the meantime, my son may be able to tell me what it is if it’s boat related. Either way, we still will award a prize to the first correct answer.

MOTORCYCLE PARTS REQUEST -

Among the items I bought from this lady were motorcycle parts, some of which appear to be brand new. I have zero knowledge of motorcycle parts. If you are knowledgeable in this area and you think you could help me identify these parts, please email me and I will email you photos. Then maybe we can determine what I actually have. My email is [email protected]

I have about 6 items, including a nice pair of saddle bags complete with brackets and 1 Kawasaki fuel tank that appears to be brand new. Everything is for sale.

OUR OLD 1967 RAM AIR FIREBIRD SURFACES –

As many of my old-time customers know, in the mid-1970s we built a Ram Air 400 Firebird based on an original 400 Firebird. Using all original parts, we built a 1967 Ram Air 4-speed Firebird. It had such options as multiplex am/fm stereo, deluxe interior, 1967 hood tachometer, OEM tailpipe splitters. This is besides the correct Ram Air package. We also had installed a 455 HO carburetor and 455 Pontiac aluminum 2-piece intake, if memory serves me correct.

I got an email from a person in Arizona that just bought it and was going through the papers and discovered the 1967 Firebird belonged to me at one time. He is not a Pontiac collector, so he had no idea who I was or even the background related to his recent purchase. The previous owner had died several years ago. The new owner’s email name seems to suggest he is into big block Chevrolet cars. I am sure we will be corresponding more this week. He just emailed me over the past weekend.

I sold this Firebird back in 1979, about 40 years ago, to a person in Illinois.

PHOTO 4 – The top left photo shows the 1982 Automobile Quarterly poster with our personal 1967 Ram Air Firebird in the top right corner. The top right photo shows a closeup of the car in the poster. The lower photos show an article from High Performance Magazine dated August 1982. They did a feature on my GTO business and there are 2 additional pages showing our 1967 Ram Air Firebird on our front lawn on Sugarbottom Road, Furlong, PA. This is where it all began around 1978. We first started in the towing business, which we continued for 20-plus years. More next week as we learn more from the new owner of our Firebird.

SOME GOOD NEWS –

We just got in our order of Grand National baseball-style hats, part #7876. Also, we have a limited supply of the rebuilt 1986-1987 Turbo Regal power steering pumps, part #7378, in stock. These are hard to come by.

REPORT FROM CARLISLE CHEVROLET NATIONALS –

This past weekend was the annual Carlisle Chevrolet Nationals that also featured a Hurst segment. Although the name of the event can be confusing, it does cover all the GM cars, not just Chevrolet. I was not able to attend but Jim Wilson, one of our customers, went. He reports that he only spotted one 1987 Grand National on the show field. Parts were extremely scarce. He only saw one set of used black headlight bezels described by Jim in rough condition. Even literature and magazines vendors had almost nothing related to the Turbo Regals.

He said there were maybe 30 cars for sale in the car corral. One was a 1984 Monte Carlo SS for $14,500 with 50,000 miles on it. A 1996 Caprice SS with 216 miles for a $25 grand price tag.
So, from a Turbo Regal standpoint, you would have been disappointed at the turnout.

FOR SALE - OUR PERSONAL 2005 CHEVY TAHOE 158,000 MILES –

The 2005 Chevy Tahoe is still available. Dealer has several people interested. The issue is getting a loan for an older vehicle. I already bought a replacement slightly smaller GM SUV that is equally as nice as our Tahoe.

DETERMINING A REAL GNX UPDATE –

Last week we talked about two of the tough parts to find for creating a GNX replica - The special GNX turbo and the patch panels ASC used on the inner front fenders to create more tire clearance when you turn the wheel. I was mistaken about stating that, to my knowledge, no one makes those patch panels for the inner front fenders. Rick Hunt, who worked on the GNX project at ASC, got the tooling years ago and has made them over the years.

You would have to go on the internet to find out who sells them today. I don’t think there would be a huge market for this particular part unless the owner was determined to do everything correctly in converting a GN to a GNX. I did sell at least 10 real GNX turbos years ago, so you may find one of them for sale or possibly one from a wrecked GNX.

With that being said, the GNX turbo is probably the most difficult part to locate to convert a GN into an exact-looking GNX.

SPEAKING OF STEERING AND TIRES RUBBING THE INNER FRONT FENDERS –

Depending on the offset and tire size, even on the 16-inch wheel size you can run into issues if you turn the wheels lock-to-lock or come down off a driveway into the street. Locking the wheels in either direction could cause the front tires to rub the inner fenders.

The sound is worse than the actual damage. Several things can contribute to this minor annoyance. One is that your car may not be straight on the frame. This is due in part to rapid acceleration and the fact Buick did not install certain lower body bushings, so those bolts can come lose over time. If you have a 1986, they have a tendency to sit lower in the front due to different springs than the 1987 models. All tire sizes may have the same figures for the size, but some can actually be wider than stated on the sidewall.

Any one of these factors can create that situation of tire rub on the front inner fenders.

HERE IS MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH FRONT TIRE RUB ON INNER FENDERS -

Back when I was buying the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals on a frequent basis, I lined up a repainted Grand National to buy out of the Maryland area. Everything was set. I had a check from the Buick dealer I had a license with and off I went to Maryland to haul it back. I did a quick visual of the Grand National and it passed my visual inspection.

I always take a short test drive and this car was no different. What was weird is that when I made left hand turns I heard front tire rub and yet when I made right hand turns there was no tire rub. The wheels were the stock 15 by 7 and had the proper size tires. So, I knew that was not an issue. It had to be something else causing the rubbing issues on the front inner fenders.

Still I was not overly concerned. As a force of habit, I never would hand over the check for the car until I had the car tied down on my trailer. This car was no exception. With it on my trailer I now had a different view of the car and I quickly noticed the spacing varied a noticeable amount from one front tire to the lip of the fender compared to the other front tire and the lip of the fender. Even without a measuring tape, the gap was noticeably different from one side of the car to the other side.

This explained why the front tire would rub when I turned the wheel one direction and did not rub turning the wheel in the other direction. What really raised a red flag was that all these cars have a slot in the side of the front frame area, so I can lock in the special GM hooks I have to strap the car to my trailer.

This Grand National did not have any slots in the front frame area of the car. At this point, I knew I was not taking this car back home. I had no idea what was wrong with the frame issue, but knew it was not a car I wanted at any cost.

Upon telling the car owner I was not buying his Grand National, I told him my reason. I then asked him did he ever have anyone follow him down the highway driving another car? My thinking was that this car probably did not track straight, something I remember issues Novas had in the late 1960s. He claimed no knowledge of any issues with the frame or tires.

I told him he would be wise to inform whoever does buy it that it has a possible issue with the frame and how the car tracks. Issues with the frame depending on state laws, could prove to be a problem for the seller. I dodged a problem by passing on this sharp-looking freshly-repainted Grand National.

I have been burned a few times over the years as I am sure most dealers of used cars have, but you have to be sharp enough to limit the times you get burned! Performance cars is one category where you have to pay particular attention because of various modifications that can prove problematic if an issue arises.

RIP DAVE BARTHOLOMEW –

Dave Bartholomew may be a name you don’t know, but he was a giant of the New Orleans music and a rock ‘n roll pioneer who along with Fats Domino co-wrote and produced such classics as “Ain’t that a Shame,” “I’m Walkin” and “Let the Four Winds Blow.” He died at age 100. He befriended Domino in the late 1940s and collaborated with the singer-pianist on dozens of hits making him one of the first rock stars and made New Orleans a center for popular music.

UPDATE TURBO REGAL WRIST WATCH –

I have not yet heard from my original source for the watches but I have been in contact with another company in China who is making me 2 watches to examine. Watch for updates.

GNX #206 FOR SALE –

We are selling GNX #206 for one of our long-time customers. While several GNXs can be found for sale on the internet, what separates this one from the pack is not only does it have the GNX book and GNX jacket but the trunk is full of everything associated with a GNX and all the documents back to the original owner in 1988. It is a 2-owner car. This GNX has never been advertised since the current owner purchased it in 1998.

It has been garaged with the wheels off the ground. Even the steering wheel was covered. Most unusual is that the little rubber bumpers are on both doors that came on the car when it was shipped is still on the car! I did not count them but Molly’s signature appears on a dozen or more items, including the GNX jacket. Car has 100% original paint and 100% stock. Front and rear fillers have just been replaced in the last 30 days.

The car still smells factory new. Mileage is 23,839 and original. Car has the latest PA inspection. It’s close to 100% perfect in every regard. The factory paint is outstanding, a term you seldom see used on a black Regal of any version. The price tag is $99,900. To help ease the pain, since I hold a license, I am open to consider any car or cars in partial trade. Trade value cuts down the sales tax bite and out-of-pocket money. Remember, a partial trade car need not be a Turbo Regal. It can even be more than one car. Buying this example eliminates any surprises that some of the other GNXs seem to have that are for sale. This GNX is one that can only advance in value. You can email me for more photos. My email is [email protected]
