Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 10-15-2014

MORE MEMORIES -

While going through some of my photos, I came across some photos of our past Buick Test cars.

The test car that started it all we leased back in September of 1987, which started this portion of our company. It was a 1987 Grand National hardtop. By far, this car ended up with the most prototype parts on it and experiments.

Our second test car was a silver 1987 Turbo-T Limited with the grey leather and black-out package. It is a very desirable combination. I think I gave a set of M & A casting aluminum heads and maybe $3500 for it.

Test car number three was also a 1987 Turbo-T, blue on blue hardtop that came out of Florida. Again, I traded some parts and cash for this car. This car had the Baer brakes upgrade and Borbet 16 inch wheels.

Last, but not least, is our current 1987 Turbo, which we have now owned for 8 years. We did of course license and tag a few others for a very short time, but since 1987 these were the four main Turbo Regals that we have enjoyed.

PHOTO 1 - The top left photo shows our original 1987 Grand National. It went to Hawaii. The top right photo shows our silver 1987 Turbo-T Limited. It went to Maryland. Notice the new Kirban-style GNX wheels on it. The bottom left photo shows our blue-on-blue 1987 Turbo-T with the black-out package. This car went to the New England area about 8 years ago. The bottom left shows our unusual white Turbo-T with a tan cloth interior. Car sports 100% original paint and is a very clean example.

RAMP TRUCK OR ROLLBACK -

Recently we noted we attended the East Coast Buick Regionals in Maryland. One transport vehicle I saw in the pits really caught my eye. It was a late 1960s or early 1970s Chevy ramp truck. Before rollbacks became popular, racers used one of two methods to transport their racecar to the track. They either used a homemade trailer or, if they had more funds, would custom build a ramp truck. Ramp trucks were very popular during the 1960s and 1970s. When we started our towing business, in addition to a tow truck, we had a car trailer and a ramp truck.

In 1970-1971 we purchased ½-ton 1947 Studebaker pickup truck. I restored it and showed it for several years at various car shows. The truck usually won as very few trucks were being built for show purposes, plus a Studebaker truck was extremely rare to see at a car show.

It was during this time I spotted the perfect ramp truck for sale. It was a 1-½-ton 1947 Studebaker truck.
Like most big trucks that were converted to ramp trucks, owners put in a larger V8 engine. Ours was Lincoln powered with an overdrive transmission. Needless to say, there is no substitute for cubic inches when hauling a 3500 lb truck.

Today many of the older trucks, especially the cab over variety, would make an excellent ramp truck, if you have the patience to restore it and hunt down the parts for it. Unlike old cars, most trucks where seldom taken care of as they were mostly for work purposes.

PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows the Chevy ramp truck I spotted at the East Coast Buick Regionals. According to the one decal, it was Cadillac V8 powered. Painted in the typical Hot Rod black, this truck was very neat looking and well done. According to the artwork on the door, it was owned by Gary’s Car Care from Woodside, Delaware. The top right photo shows a close up of the cartoon logo on the door. The lower left photo shows our 1949 Oldsmobile 76 Club Coupe on our 1947 Studebaker ramp truck. The lower right shows it hauling our matching 1947 Studebaker pickup truck. My wife’s cousin made the wooden Pepsi 6-pack box and the bottles were blow-up bottles. I would inflate them for display at car shows. As you can imagine, the combination was quite a hit at car shows in the 1970s and I usually won at every car show we entered. I would be curious if anyone has ever seen either of these trucks at any car show event over the years? I think I paid $900 or $1,000 for the ramp truck back in the early 1970s.

1985 BUICK CENTURY T-TYPE –

In one of our recent Inner Circle emails, we showed some of the various T-Type emblems from my private collection. One was for the Century T-Type. One of the rarest T-Type models Buick produced in the mid- 1980s was the 1985 Century T-Type 4-door sedan. Although basically a dress-up package, it featured alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a center console with bucket seats in a four door sedan. It was powered by the 3.8 engine.

Unfortunately, none of the Buick books I have break down the production figures for the 1985 Century with the T-Type option. I can say I can’t recall ever seeing a Century T-Type 4 door sedan, even in the various junkyards over the years. I’m guessing it would not have been a popular option for older buyers to choose for a sedan back when these cars were new. Even the 3.8 engine was an option in the Century that year.

PHOTO 3 - The photo on the left shows the 1985 Century T-Type. The photo on the right shows the very unique dash with the regular looking 85 mph speedometer. But under it is a tachometer where the shift indicator normally would be if the car was a column shift car.

PHOTO 4 - The photo on the left shows a close up of the leather-wrapped steering wheel. It is similar to the one found in the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals, only the leather extends further up each spoke. The photo on the right shows the front seat area. Note the console with bucket seats. According to the owner, this was a western car and only has about 50,000 miles on it.

CAR AND DRIVER 400 HORSEPOWER CLUB -

Car and Driver magazine recently listed five cars that are now affordable and a good value that crank out 400 plus horsepower. The values fall in the $20,000 to $25,000 range for one in excellent condition.

The article also listed its base price when each was brand new. Heading the list was the 2011 Mustang 5.0, which will do 0-60 times in 4.6 seconds. The horsepower was rated at 412. New the base price was $30,495. Today expect to pay $21,500 to $25,000.

Their second choice was a 2003 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG. The horsepower was rated at 493. It will run 0-60 is 4.5 seconds. New the car listed for $118,295. Today it can be bought for about $20,000.

Their third choice was a 2005 Corvette rated at 400 horsepower. It will do 0-60 in 4.3 seconds. New the base price was $44,245. Today it is worth $20,000 to $23,000.

Coming in fourth is the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, capable of 0-60 times in 4.5 seconds. The base price when new was $39,995. The current value today is between $20,000 and $25,000.

The fifth choice is a 2007 Audi S6 435 horsepower capable of 0-60 times of 5.4 seconds. Sold new for $74,020. Today’s value is $20,000 to $25,000.

In quick review, the Mercedes-Benz lost the most value and would appear to be the overall bargain in the list. While that may be true, repairs can be quite costly. The Mustang appears to be the best bargain with the Corvette being the second choice. The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 would probably provide the most fun and be the most useful in the bunch, and probably the most rare vehicle of the group to find.

QUIRKY MISHAPS -

I am sure at some point in your life you have experienced a quirky accident or screw up of some sort. Here are a few that I have been told about and a few that I have experienced.

Locally to me, one of our customers just had a very high-dollar show-quality paint job done on their Grand National. The paint wasn’t even cured yet. They had it at a dealership for some minor work. The metal end of an air hose blew off while their car was in the work bay. By the time the metal end had come to a rest it had dented a door, hood and trunk lid. Total damage - $3,000.

Few years ago another customer of ours was installing new T-Tops weather strips on his driveway. At some point, he got distracted and backed his car up. You guessed it. He ran over and shattered one of his T-Tops!

The next two stories happened to me. In the early 1970s our first tow truck was a 1-½ ton 1950s Chevy with a hand winch. (When I was young I had more strength!) I had it parked on a slight incline at my friend’s gas station. I had wheeled out one of those 50 gallon 80-90 weight oil drums to service my truck. At some point I got distracted and forgot that the lube drum was behind my truck. You guessed it. I backed up and knocked it over. That 80 or 90 weight gear lube just oozed all over the driveway making one sticky mess.

Another screw up happened years later. I was contracted to pick up a Volkswagon in the center of a nearby town. I was given the color and year of the VW and knew that I had to get it without having any keys. I drove up the street it was located on and picked it up and towed it to the dealership. An hour or so later the dealership called me and said the keys the owner dropped off don’t work on the car. It was then discovered that another VW in the same color was parked a little further up on the same street and was the one I was supposed to take. Needless to say, I wasted a few hours making things right!

So, count your blessings, and if you are traveling to the GS Nationals this week, take 2 sets of car keys. Chances are someone is going to lock your door without realizing your keys are still in the ignition. This is one reason I always take two sets of keys whenever I travel! It’s happened to me more than once.

GS NATIONALS BREAKING NEWS -

We will have Scanmasters, Powerloggers, and Translaters available at our vendor spot at the GS Nationals. Supplies are limited, so be sure to see us Thursday or Friday if you want one. Or call our office to reserve any of these items you want to pick up at the Nationals - 215-766-1611.

Our plan is to take a completely dead battery and put it in a Turbo Regal at our vendor spot at the GS Nationals to demonstrate the new multi-function jumper unit.

You will be able to see first hand what this 9-ounce battery pack can do.

We may not have any on hand to sell, but will take your order as several shipments are in route to us.

UPDATE ON THE NEW MULTI-FUNCTION JUMP STARTER -

Currently we just received word our one shipment is in route. Another shipment is in the works behind it.
We expect to have all our back orders filled over the next two weeks. The demand for this product has been larger than we expected.

If you go on any of the various websites or ebay, you will see other multi-function jump starters that share the same red and black casing as the one we sell. I had the choice of several colors for the housing when I looked into buying them. I felt the red and black was the best color combination.

However, when you look over the specifications with many of the other units, they do NOT have the same cranking and peak amps that ours offers.

Still others may state they can only handle a 4-litre gas engine or a 3-litre diesel engine. Ours will handle any 12-volt gas or diesel vehicle. Our cranking is 250 amps and 500 peak amps.

Some may not come with both a wall charger and car charger.

Others may offer more options to charge other devices (which is nice), but the kit we offer will handle almost all the popular phones plus it has two USB ports. You can actually charge several phones at once. Example, I can charge my flip phone in the one lead and my wife (who has a Samsung phone) can plug her phone in the lead for her phone. One of the other leads does work on the iPhones.

It’s just like the eprom in your Buick - one major supplier made the carrier for the chip and several companies put their parts in the carrier. According to our supplier, we are the only source located in the U.S.A. that is marketing the battery pack that they make.

Again, until we catch up with demand you can simply call our office or email [email protected] with your order and phone number.

We would contact you either by email or phone to obtain your credit card info when we have units in stock and ready to ship.

It’s not often that a product comes a long that outsells our ability to get ample stock on hand.

These make excellent Christmas, holiday and birthday gifts. We have already had several customers buy them for that reason.

Adding to the demand, we are hearing from several customers that want to buy more than one, and also want to sell them in their area as well.

SPECIAL RUN OF CORRECT FITTING 1984-1985 TURBO REGAL PLUG WIRES -

We had a special run made of the correct length 1984-1985 Turbo Regal grey spark plug wires.

We used to sell these years ago, but stopped due to lack of demand. We had 10 sets made. If you want a set, you must call our office to place your order. The price is $49.95 plus $8 shipping. We only have ten sets available.

I don’t believe any other source has these available in the proper lengths. These are not on our website. You must call our office to order - 215-766-1611 x 0 - specify 1984-1985 Turbo Regal Custom-Cut High-Performance Plug Wires.

VEHICLES FOR SALE -

From time to time, whenever we spot an unusual or an exceptional car or truck for sale, or one we have for sale, we will put a blurb in our weekly Inner Circle. Also any cars that our customers have for sale will be featured here and you can see their car with photos on our website as well. In this category we will run the descriptions for two to three weeks and, if there is no interest in that particular vehicle, it will be deleted the following week. Any new vehicles that we add will appear first, so the oldest listing would be at the end of this section. If any of these vehicles perk your interest, email me personally - [email protected] - for more information and photos.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –

1981-1987 GM G-BODY (Including Buick Turbo Regals) -
Reproduction WINDSHIELD WASHER CAP

This is a reproduction of the windshield washer cap for all 1981-1987 GM G-Body cars, including the Turbo Regals.

This black push-on cap goes on the windshield washer bottle, located on the driver's side inner fender. While many later replacement caps will fit, only this cap is an exact match to the original washer bottle cap with the raised wording and the nozzle opposite the ear.

In many cases, the white wording on the original cap may be rubbed off, the cap may be cracked, or you may have the wrong washer cap on the washer reservoir.

Our second photo shows a worn original cap on the washer bottle.

This is a simple way to replace the old cap.

Another nice under-the-hood restoration item.

MULTI-FUNCTION JUMP STARTER - MODEL T6
Jump Starting / Digital Products / LED Lighting

Introducing one of the greatest products that makes jump starting any 12-volt gas or diesel powered vehicle easy to do. It is made by one of the leading battery manufacturers. Unit will also jump start any 12-volt motorcycle, boat, ATV or tractor.

The secret is in a very compact power supply module that is basically the size of a smart phone. It measures 6-1/2" x 3" x 1" thick and weighs a mere 9 ounces. It packs enough wallop to start any 12-volt gas or diesel powered vehicle, can charge a variety of digital devices, and also has built-in LED lighting.

I was very skeptical at first. So, I put it to the supreme jump starting test, using a car that was parked in a junkyard in 2008 (according to the Inspection Sticker) and not touched in 6 years. It cranked the engine like I had put a new battery in it! I then tested it on another car that was parked since 2010 and again it was like I parked the car the day before!

It comes with 4 other adapters that plug into a USB port on the side of the battery pack, which will charge a wide variety of electronic devices (phone, laptop, etc.) These adapters are formatted for four different outlets used on various digital products. This module or battery pack actually has two USB ports. All four adapters are fused into one lead, making it very compact and less likely that you would ever lose any of the four adapters. You can also plug your own electronic device cord into the USB port.

It also has a LED light with three settings: standard, flashing, and SOS. The LED light can stay on continuously for 48 hours if the unit is fully charged.

The power supply module (battery) can be fully charged in 4 hours either with the supplied wall outlet plug or supplied cigarette lighter adapter.

It has a built-in circuit protection, fuse protection, and an anti-reverse battery jumper plug.

The unit can stay fully charged if not used for 6 to 10 months!

You can jump start 20-30 vehicles on a single charge.

It has a visible 5-light bar indicator so you know how much "juice" is available. It goes into a sleep mode when not in use.

Each unit is fully tested before it is shipped to us. Each one is also partially charged, ready to be used.

In case of a power outage, this is the perfect way to charge your electronic devices.

Ideal for any biker, camper, automotive repair shop, or car dealership.

The convenience of having a pocket-size jumper module that weighs 9 ounces is better than lugging a 15-28 lb battery jumper box when you need to jump a vehicle.

NOTE - If you want a spare set of jumper cables, you can purchase it separately, our part #7631.

This makes a great gift idea for anyone who may store cars in a garage or for your mechanic.

It would be the perfect “Thank You” gift for car dealerships for when a customer buys a car.

Some of the other brands can run as much as $175 or more and may not offer all the features or the same specifications as this one. In some cases, you are paying for the private label.

Power Supply Module (battery)
Pair of Jumper Cables
4-Way Adapter with USB Connector

1978-1988 G-BODY with Factory T-Tops (including Buick Regal) -
FACTORY T-TOPS CUSTOM-MADE SUNSHADES (2) SET

One of the most effective methods to eliminate the sun from fading the interior on a T-Tops G-body car is to install a set of sunshades that block out the sunlight.

While several different versions exist, once installed what you see in your car all looks the same.

Our supplier uses grey factory headliner material.

Our T-Tops sunshades are notched to seat under the T-Tops molding trim. This format eliminates having to make major adjustments from inside the car. This is a very light-weight design that not only keeps the bright sunlight out, but allows the air conditioner to be more efficient.

Each set of sunshades come with easy-to-follow directions showing the proper placement, since each piece is custom made to fit each T-Top.

Another great interior restoration item.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
