ROAD TRIP TO ILLINOIS -

I left on a Sunday and arrived at Castle’s location late Monday afternoon. Lemont, Illinois is a historic little town that has a canal that was used in the 1800s. It not only has a passenger train set of tracks, but also across from Castle’s shop is a set of tracks used by freight trains. The freight trains rumble through about every 45 minutes.

The weather was picture perfect and we had a great turn out. I got to see several unusual turbo cars, including an absolutely perfect 1982-½ Grand Nationals that won one of the awards I gave out. The long distance award went to the Grand National owner that drove his car all the way from Tennessee, over 400 miles. He used to live in the area years ago.

The third winner of the 3 awards I gave out I am sure was not expected by the owner. The owner thought he had a rare WE4 Turbo-T. I spotted his car almost instantly when he showed up. He was delighted to find he did not have a WE4, but instead had one of the very rare early 1987 Turbo-Ts that was black with the WO2 black-out option.

If you have my book “Kirban’s Guide to 1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regals,” on pages 64-66 we explain how ordering a black Turbo-T with the WO2 package was not offered once the WE4 option became available on November 15th,1986. That means for only a period of approximately 60 days could a black Turbo-T be ordered with the WO2 black-out option. This was done to eliminate confusion for the Buick sales personnel and to promote the new WE4 model. In other words, this owner left that night realizing his car was worth at least $5,000 more than he originally thought and my book proves it. I did check his trunk ID label to verify my findings before I informed him as to how rare his car really is. If I had to take an educated guess, I think probably less than 100 of these models were produced.

I had several people pull their cars up to where I was talking, which made it easier to point out different things on the various cars. There was at least one real GNX in attendance. I did spot several cars with my Kirban-style GNX wheels. Two owners had purchased their cars from me years ago. Everyone had a great time and learned something new. It was great to meet some of my long-time customers, some for the first time.

Castle had his Silver Billet car on display and the builder of this car came down from Wisconsin to sell Castle some of the parts he had saved all these years. The No Reserve Auction saw some great deals for those that bid on items. The Grand National go kart body shell did not obtain the opening bid, so it was a no sale.

PHOTO 1 - The top left photo shows the entrance way to Castle’s shop in Lemont, Illinois. The top right photo shows just some of the parts Paul put out for sale for the seminar. The bottom left shows part of my display of items that I brought with me. The bottom right photo shows Castle’s Silver Billet race car getting loaded at his house to take to his shop.

PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows the 3 awards I gave out at my seminar. The top right photo shows the Grand National from Tennessee that won the Long Distance Award. He drove over 400 miles to attend this event. The bottom left photo shows the 1982-½ Grand National that also won one of the awards I gave out. The bottom right photo shows just some of the 40-plus Turbo Regals that were in attendance.

PHOTO 3 - The top left photo shows a real GNX at the Castle event. The top right photo shows a set of Hurst wheels that were for sale at the GTOAA event. The price tag with the center caps (not pictured) was a cool $4,000. The bottom left photo shows the display sign for an extremely rare 1969 GTO Judge with the ram air V engine. Under the winner section he noted a win at our GTO Heaven event 1988. Purely PMD trailered this extremely rare GTO Judge to our event in 1988 in Furlong, PA from New Mexico.

I will write more on this in a later Inner Circle. The photo to the bottom right shows Pete Serio, the original “Window Rattle Guy,” who I met in Columbus on my way home. He went with me to a nearby junkyard where I snapped this photo. We wasted a half hour there as he left his tool bag in one of the cars and couldn’t remember which car - something I’ve done myself! I stopped to see him as it was his turn to buy dinner at the nearby Olive Garden!

All in all, it was a great trip, although tiring since I am not as young as I was years ago when I traveled extensively first for my Dad and then buying over 300 Turbo Regals and bringing them home.

BY THE NUMBERS -

At the Castle/Kirban Seminar we had over 40 Turbo Regals in attendance and over 80 people showed up. It was a pretty impressive turnout for a Tuesday night in Lemont, Illinois.

At the GTOAA National Meet I had over 50 people attend my 8:30 am seminar. Considering the early time, I thought that was a pretty good turnout!

OBSERVATIONS FROM MY RECENT ROAD TRIP -

The cheapest price I saw for regular gas was in Illinois at less than $2 per gallon.

In most places I found it extremely difficult to buy a daily newspaper, even the USA Today. Back home I buy 5 different newspapers a day!

In and around Chicago they hit you with tolls almost at every exit. Seems to me it would be better to increase the tax on gas and eliminate all those tolls.

Being a veteran paid off at most of the motels where I stayed. I had proof as my dog tag is still attached to my key ring. I did spot 3 serious accidents along the interstate highways.

PHOTO 4 - The top photo shows a set of the redone show-quality 1986-1987 Turbo Regal valve covers complete with new gaskets and new grommet installed in the passenger valve cover. See the Rare Parts section for prices. The lower left photo shows one of the rare GNX rare end covers that we have for sale under Rare Parts section. The lower right photo shows a view on a car. Richard Clark made some of these years ago when he made the first reproduction GNX suspensions.

1986-1987 TURBO REGAL PASSENGER’S SIDE VALVE COVER GROMMET -

I finally have some good news on this passenger’s side valve cover grommet. I’ve been taking an original grommet to every Carlisle swap meet with the hopes of matching it up with one. At the recent GM Carlisle event, I found one that has the correct thickness and diameter. I bought every one the guy had in the bin, since he does not do any shipping.

Even if you don’t need one, I suggest you buy one to have as I have no idea if I can find anymore once my current supply is exhausted. The only difference is, unlike the original grommet this does not taper down on the inside hole size. Meaning it is tough to install it unless you remove the valve cover from the engine. You also have to rub a little oil on the breather you plan to install into it. I know as I did a test fit with the 3 redone valve cover sets I have for sale. On the plus side, a tight fit is better than a sloppy fit!

They are in stock the part #6982.

Here is a link to this valve cover grommet on our website.

WHAT IF -

What if the hit TV show “Shark Tank” was on the air in the 1950s and early 1960s. The Slinky toy was a discovery based on a metal spring bouncing down a series of steps. The company behind the Slinky was one of the very first companies that my Dad did the advertising for. At the time my Dad owned an advertising agency in the early 1950s. My parents used to package the Slinkys on the kitchen table in our house.

I can see the Shark Tank panel, specifically Mr. Wonderful, saying the Slinky is a stupid idea and why would anyone buy a metal spring?

Fast forward to Hurst developing the three-speed and four-speed shifters. George Hurst enters the Shark Tank asking for a loan so he can increase his business with the hopes of landing an account with GM. Again, the Shark Tank panel would not understand why would car owners remove a perfectly working factory shifter from the column and cut a hole in the floor to mount a shifter on the floor? Or why would any car manufacturer want to buy a Hurst shifter when they developed their own shifters? Hurst would have been shot down, in my opinion.

However, if Hurst approached the Shark Tank panel about a loan for the “Jaws of Life” product, which would demonstrate how it speeds up rescues on accidents and saves lives, that product would have perked their interest. George Hurst would have walked out of that episode with a substantial investment from someone on the Shark Tank panel.

What is my point? These people never gave up. I picked these 3 products because I grew up during that time and I know the history about them. I know for example, George Hurst travelled extensively and ran full-page ads in almost every car magazine, besides attending drag strips to promote his shifters. He also visited speed shops across the country peddling his products. The results speak for themselves.

The Jaws of Life has proven to be a lifesaver and is still used today, almost 50 years after it was invented. The Slinky has enjoyed a long life among kids, helped in part by the popular Toy Story movie franchise. I have the artwork for the original Slinky Dog in my personal collection.

NOTE - IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO SEE THE RARE PARTS SECTION -

If you are not able to see the Rare Parts section at the end of this Inner Circle, it is because you are not an Inner Circle member, but instead are reading this on the internet. You must subscribe to see the Rare Parts section each week. It would go directly to your inbox every Wednesday afternoon. It is FREE, probably one reason why nobody complains about what I write about.

Simply email - [email protected] - to get on our weekly Inner Circle email.

VALVE COVER DESK TOP LAMP UPDATE -

URGENT NEED FOR CORRECT STEERING WHEEL CORES -

We have an urgent need for correct 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel cores that are not bent. They can have minor rust on the spokes but cannot be pitted. If you owe us a steering wheel core, please send it in to get your core deposit back.

We have had to raise the core price in order to continue this service. Without cores, owners can’t get a redone leather wrapped steering wheel. Help us continue this needed service. We now issue a Letter for $100, if you have a correct 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel core.

EMAILS TO KIRBAN PERFORMANCE -

NOTE - If you email us and do NOT get a timely reply, be sure to check your “SPAM” folder. Some emails do not go thru.

If you need to email us, use - [email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN -

If you get your car repainted, it’s best to spend the extra money and time to pull the quarter windows and side mirrors. The end result is a better, more professional paint job. The more parts you remove on your own, the lower your cost would be.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]

UPCOMING RELATED CAR SHOW EVENTS FOR 2017 -

CARLISLE CHRYSLER NATIONALS -
JULY 14-16, 2017
Carlisle Fairgrounds, Carlisle, PA

Already they have 80 Hurst cars confirmed for this first time ever Hurst Nationals. This event is one you don’t want to miss. I still do not have my exact speaking times yet. Watch for updates shortly.

The Hemi-Under-Glass car and driver Bob Riggle will be making an appearance at the Hurst Nationals at Carlisle. Many of you may have seen where it flipped over several times when Bob took Jay Leno for a ride awhile ago. The car has been completely repaired.

This year’s Chrysler event has a special all new Hurst Nationals July 14th and 15th in conjunction with the Chrysler Nationals. I have been asked to conduct a seminar on Hurst both days, July 14th and 15th. The location of my seminars as well as the other seminars is held just off the grounds from Gate 3 at the Carlisle Expo Center. They have not yet told me my speaking times.

My granddaughter, Devyn hopes to go with me to help. With Chrysler introducing the Demon this April, my guess is they will have several Demons on display at Carlisle. Hope to see some of my customers at this event. I am as well versed with early Hurst history as I am with Turbo Regals.

As with all my seminars, I will be doing a M&Ms contest in honor of my parents. The Don Garlits autographed connecting rod will make a nice prize!

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

1984-1987 Buick Regal (Including Turbo Regal) -
GM FLUSH MOUNT KIT FOR AFTERMARKET RADIO

Some Turbo Regal owners may want to upgrade their radio to any of the various aftermarket radios available today.

Most of the radio mounting kits sold today for doing an aftermarket radio installation do not allow the radio to sit back in the factory bezel.

The end result is it looks tacky. This special mounting kit uses the factory radio side brackets which attach to the side of this mounting kit.

By using this method it allows any aftermarket radio/CD, etc. player to sit flush with the factory radio bezel. As the one photo shows it accepts two different size radio units, which will work with most Pioneer units as well as many of the other aftermarket brands.

You must have the factory brackets, which we show in the lower center photo. Those brackets do NOT come with the new kit.

This kit was made possible by one of our Turbo Regal customers who is in the radio installation business and has it in his personal Turbo-T.

See part #7803 if you want to purchase a complete Pioneer radio with the mounting kit included. That part number also shows you how it will look once installed in a Turbo Regal.

Photo on the top left shows all the pieces included in this kit.

Photo on the lower left shows the insert installed into the main housing, which you may use depending on the size of the radio you are installing.

Photo on the lower center shows the original radio brackets that you need to re-use from your stock radio to make this new mounting kit fit flush in the radio bezel opening. We do NOT include these brackets.

Photo on the right photo shows this kit installed on a Pioneer radio/CD player, so it sits flush in the radio bezel opening.

SPEEDOMETER CABLE GROMMET
REPRODUCTION ALUMINUM BRACKET

Over time, the original speedometer cable grommet bracket can break, since it’s only plastic. This reproduction bracket is made in aluminum, so it will last.

It is the only part that holds the grommet in place on the firewall to secure the speedometer cable.

I do not know if cars with the digital dash had this bracket or not. Regular Regals did not use this bracket, from what I can determine. I am also not aware if the 1984 and 1985 Turbo Regals used it. It can be difficult to see because it’s somewhat hidden by the harness behind the engine, which is also held in place with a metal bracket.

I have no idea why Buick used a plastic bracket secured by two 7mm screws for this connection. Check this bracket on your car. There’s probably a good chance it is broken.

NOTE - You can paint this bracket semi-gloss black or satin black to match the original bracket.
Another excellent replacement for any engine restoration.

UPGRADED ALUMINUM RADIATOR

Because of the age of these cars, the radiator has lost some of its efficency. Also the factory core size is marginal at best.

These upgraded radiators are 100% brand new, and made by COLD-CASE, a division of Max Performance, who also owns Pypes Exhaust.

This new radiator is bare aluminum. It has two 1" tubes, which are bigger than stock. The core size is 1/4" wider and the end tanks are 1/4" wider.

This radiator has undergone several months of testing by Nick Micale in his car in Arizona.
The original radiator weighs 25.6 lbs, this radiator weighs 15.2 lbs. The overall weigh savings over the stock radiator is about 10 lbs.

This upgraded radiator is designed so it fits exactly like the factory radiator and accepts all the factory original oil and transmission coolant fittings. The factory radiator cap will also fit this radiator. The reproduction radiator top plate and the custom top plate will also fit.

Our first photo shows this new upgraded aluminum radiator. Our other photos show a comparison views of an original radiator and this new aluminum radiator.

NOTE - If you plan to paint the radiator, we highly recommend Eastwood’s Radiator Black 12 oz Satin Finish, part #10340Z @ $12.99 per can. A typical radiator requires 2 coats of paint. Normal engine paints are too thick for radiator use, which will interfere with heat transfer and block air flow over the cooling fins. Also, standard paint tends to flake off metal radiator tanks. The Radiator Black is specially formulated to solve these problems, will not interfere with heat transfer, and is heat resistant to 300°F.

NOTE - Shipping cost is based on an oversized package.

Another nice engine restoration item.

NOTE - This radiator is currently out of stock. The manufacturer expects to have the next batch ready in mid-July. If you would like to be called when radiators are back in stock, call Christina - 215-766-1611 x 0.

CUSTOM RADIATOR TOP PLATE & HARDWARE

In many cases, the original metal radiator top plate that holds the top of the radiator and secures the housing for the electric fan may be rusted or bent.

This radiator top plate is unique to the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals, making it difficult to find a nice used one today.

This radiator top plate is made by Spoolfool but does not look like the stock original steel radiator top plate. It is fiberglass and not metal. It attaches the same way, however the top surface is smooth. This gives it a more custom look.

Each one is done in black gelcoat polished to a high gloss shine. It weighs only 1 pound versus 3 pounds for the metal plate. It saves a small amount of weight, but more importantly, it will never rust!

It comes with 5 powder-coated black bolts, which are the correct size for this plate, and easy-to-follow directions.

NOTE - Our first picture show this new CUSTOM Radiator Top Plate and Hardware, #7776. Our second photo shows the stock Reproduction Radiator Top Plate & Hardware, #7774. The second photo also shows the placement of this plate in the lower photos.

A nice finishing touch for under the hood.
