Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 07-22-2020 –
CONTEST ANSWER AND WINNER –
Last week we ran a contest to see who could name the extremely rare U.S. car make and model that had an optional turbo during the 1980s. The main clue we gave was that the production was “always in question” since very few were produced. Very little is known about this entry other than a full-color full-page ad that I have saved all these years. The ad at least verifies the car maker’s intention!
The most popular wrong answer we received was a “Ford Mustang.” This answer was partially correct as the car maker is Ford. The car model was the “Ford Fairmont Futura Turbo,” The ad implies this was a 1980 model. Barely visible in the photo is a small bump in the center of the hood with the word “TURBO.”
If you research it on the internet, there is a YouTube video showing one in that same exact color combination as the magazine ad. It is owned by a couple in New Jersey since 1987. The YouTube video was shot at Fords at Carlisle event two years ago. I must confess, I have never seen one. My guess is not many were produced.
We had 3 or 4 correct responses. The winner was Robert Earl out of New Hampshire. He owns a 1987 Grand National and a 1987 Turbo-T.
PHOTO 1 – We show this full-page ad. I can’t recall what magazine it was in. It was a Ford Fairmont Futura Turbo coupe powered by a 4-cylinder with the optional turbo. In looking back to the 1980s, there were several U.S. auto makers starting to tinker with adding a turbo. We all know what car make and model made the best imprint during the 1980s with adding a turbo and intercooler – the 1986 and 1987 Buick Turbo Regals.

BILL DIEKMANN – RIP –
If you ever attended the GS Nationals, you certainly would remember Bill Diekmann. He was very outgoing and knowledgeable on Turbo Regals. He was always ready to help anyone. He was always buying parts from us for cars he worked on over the years. He passed away last week. Bill hailed from Missouri.
REMEMBERING FRED BOATMAN –
Long-time subscribers to our Inner Circle may recall that back in January 2013 we ran a contest to come up with a name for our new monthly cartoon character. The winner was Thomas Crandell from Dallas, Texas. He came up with the name “Tommy Turbo,” which we used for our new monthly cartoon.
Fred Boatman ended up drawing about 30 cartoons for us beginning in 2013. I recently discovered that he passed away in March of 2018 at the age of 83. I have all his original hand drawn cartoons that he did for us back then. It was very easy to convey the basic idea to Fred and he would then draw the cartoon based on my idea. We are thinking about getting some of these cartoons done on T-shirts.

That cartoon about the brake bowls toss game reminds me… our source for obtaining brake bowls has just informed me that because of the virus and shipping issues from overseas, we will not have brake bowls until mid-August!
JAMES SHERWOOD – RIP –
James Sherwood died a few weeks back at the age of 86. He became an American multimillionaire by his mid-30s. He was a wheeler/dealer in the shipping container business before branching out. He bought and refurbished more than 50 storied hotels around the world. What caught my interest in his obituary was that in the 1977 the Orient Express made its final run. He later bought two of the original railcars and restored them.
In its heyday (1880 to 1940) the Orient Express ran various routes from Paris to Venice. It was perhaps the most glamourous form of travel in the world. After restoring the two original Orient Express rail cars, he spent an estimated 30 million dollars tracking down 35 of the original rail cars. Some he found in museums, others in salvage yards. One was used to transporting racing pigeons. The interiors were reproduced to the exact standards to match the original interiors of the train cars. By 1982 the fabled train was ready to be relaunched. It has been rolling across Europe for 38 years before being sidelined by the coronavirus.
So, while you may be restoring one Turbo Regal, think about the money, effort, and devotion James Sherwood spent restoring 35 rail cars. Just the logistics alone to transport them had to be a major job.

We now will offer the Hydroboost Installation Kit by itself for those of you that may want to buy a different master cylinder and Hydroboost unit. The installation kit would include the hoses and fittings, a power steering filter, a new gasket to the firewall, and a syringe to bleed the system.

DUAL FAN BRACKET FOR THE 1986-1987 TURBO REGALS –
We just approved the sample and the directions for this new bracket that will nicely secure the dual fan set up we sell. Even if you have the dual fan already installed, you will be able to purchase this bracket by itself. This bracket will secure the dual fan set up closer to the radiator and make for a nicer factory installation. Watch for updates and prices soon.

We discovered that Fed Ex will not forward any packages that are sent to the PO Box or to our old address in Plumsteadville. Instead they deliver the packages to the old address and leave them outside. They refuse to forward and say that we should notify the shipper. In most cases, we have no idea when we are getting packages shipped back to us.
If you have any cores that are being sent back to us, be sure to use the correct address, especially if you use Fed Ex. Otherwise, we may not receive your package or it may be sent back to you.

Here is the information on our credits for cores.
STEERING WHEEL CORES. Currently we need good 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering cores. They must be straight and not have rusted spokes. We will issue a Letter of Credit of $100 for each acceptable core.
POWERMASTER BRAKE UNITS. Currently, we are accepting powermaster brake units. We give a $150 Letter-of-Credit for each acceptable core. If you include the turbo pedal add $10. You would receive $160 Letter-of-Credit. To avoid having your core not accepted, you MUST first email me a photo of the core you plan to send in - [email protected] We will NOT accept any cores that have severe rust issues or have been disassembled. Core must have the brake switch and brake bowl reservoir. Too many of the cores we have been getting are in such terrible shape they are worthless to us.
TURBO CORES must be the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal stock turbo. They must be complete. We will issue you a $150 Letter-of-Credit for each acceptable core. We urgently need these cores!
If you ship to us, the post office is the cheapest method. Pack the item(s) with a note with your name, address and phone number.

Good news - We now accept Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.
Here are the options and the costs.
Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need be specifically Turbo Regal related. It can be for something for sale or something wanted.
Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.
The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.
It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.
We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.
Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,400 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,200 potential buyers.

The following information is for Joe Boyle’s 1987 Grand National that he is selling. He has owned this 1987 Grand National since 1988.
Here is a chance to own a very well cared for 1987 Grand National hardtop owned by the same owner since 1988. Joe has bene a long time customer of ours and has brought this pride and joy to several of our Open House and reunion events. This is one of the very few Grand Nationals that the SPID label (trunk label) has bene personally signed TWICE by Molly at two different Reunion events, including the last one he attended in 2007.
Joe Boyle bought this Grand National in July 1988. This car has been well maintained by Richard Clark of Burlington, NC. Car has been to several Kirban Open House events. It is basically stock and has all the brace kits installed, all new body bushings, and the window rattle kits installed by Pete Hoffman. It has recently been service by Richard Clark. Richard put a value of $33,000 on the car, however Joe is offering this car for $28,500.
It has become a daily driver for a while now and Joe is looking to sell it to someone who will enjoy it as much as he has through the years. He has the original Window Sticker. Car has 174,000 miles on it and Joe can provide you with the history of the car. Car runs extremely well and just needs a little TLC.

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
SEMI-BLACK EXTERIOR TRIM SPRAY PAINT
This spray paint is semi-black and is an excellent color match for the black-out trim moldings that was used on certain Turbo Regal models.
It is made by the same company that color matches the grey, dark blue, burgundy paint we also sell from this same source.
It dries within minutes. While many variations of semi-black exist we found this to be a very close match. Remember, no paint color is going to match trim that has been exposed for over 30 years of sun and weather.
This is ideal to do the taillight trim parts and the plastic headlight bezels.

This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

BILL DIEKMANN – RIP –
If you ever attended the GS Nationals, you certainly would remember Bill Diekmann. He was very outgoing and knowledgeable on Turbo Regals. He was always ready to help anyone. He was always buying parts from us for cars he worked on over the years. He passed away last week. Bill hailed from Missouri.
REMEMBERING FRED BOATMAN –
Long-time subscribers to our Inner Circle may recall that back in January 2013 we ran a contest to come up with a name for our new monthly cartoon character. The winner was Thomas Crandell from Dallas, Texas. He came up with the name “Tommy Turbo,” which we used for our new monthly cartoon.
Fred Boatman ended up drawing about 30 cartoons for us beginning in 2013. I recently discovered that he passed away in March of 2018 at the age of 83. I have all his original hand drawn cartoons that he did for us back then. It was very easy to convey the basic idea to Fred and he would then draw the cartoon based on my idea. We are thinking about getting some of these cartoons done on T-shirts.

That cartoon about the brake bowls toss game reminds me… our source for obtaining brake bowls has just informed me that because of the virus and shipping issues from overseas, we will not have brake bowls until mid-August!
JAMES SHERWOOD – RIP –
James Sherwood died a few weeks back at the age of 86. He became an American multimillionaire by his mid-30s. He was a wheeler/dealer in the shipping container business before branching out. He bought and refurbished more than 50 storied hotels around the world. What caught my interest in his obituary was that in the 1977 the Orient Express made its final run. He later bought two of the original railcars and restored them.
In its heyday (1880 to 1940) the Orient Express ran various routes from Paris to Venice. It was perhaps the most glamourous form of travel in the world. After restoring the two original Orient Express rail cars, he spent an estimated 30 million dollars tracking down 35 of the original rail cars. Some he found in museums, others in salvage yards. One was used to transporting racing pigeons. The interiors were reproduced to the exact standards to match the original interiors of the train cars. By 1982 the fabled train was ready to be relaunched. It has been rolling across Europe for 38 years before being sidelined by the coronavirus.
So, while you may be restoring one Turbo Regal, think about the money, effort, and devotion James Sherwood spent restoring 35 rail cars. Just the logistics alone to transport them had to be a major job.

TURBO REGAL BRAKE SOLUTIONS –
We now will offer the Hydroboost Installation Kit by itself for those of you that may want to buy a different master cylinder and Hydroboost unit. The installation kit would include the hoses and fittings, a power steering filter, a new gasket to the firewall, and a syringe to bleed the system.

DUAL FAN BRACKET FOR THE 1986-1987 TURBO REGALS –
We just approved the sample and the directions for this new bracket that will nicely secure the dual fan set up we sell. Even if you have the dual fan already installed, you will be able to purchase this bracket by itself. This bracket will secure the dual fan set up closer to the radiator and make for a nicer factory installation. Watch for updates and prices soon.

We discovered that Fed Ex will not forward any packages that are sent to the PO Box or to our old address in Plumsteadville. Instead they deliver the packages to the old address and leave them outside. They refuse to forward and say that we should notify the shipper. In most cases, we have no idea when we are getting packages shipped back to us.
If you have any cores that are being sent back to us, be sure to use the correct address, especially if you use Fed Ex. Otherwise, we may not receive your package or it may be sent back to you.

Here is the information on our credits for cores.
STEERING WHEEL CORES. Currently we need good 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering cores. They must be straight and not have rusted spokes. We will issue a Letter of Credit of $100 for each acceptable core.
POWERMASTER BRAKE UNITS. Currently, we are accepting powermaster brake units. We give a $150 Letter-of-Credit for each acceptable core. If you include the turbo pedal add $10. You would receive $160 Letter-of-Credit. To avoid having your core not accepted, you MUST first email me a photo of the core you plan to send in - [email protected] We will NOT accept any cores that have severe rust issues or have been disassembled. Core must have the brake switch and brake bowl reservoir. Too many of the cores we have been getting are in such terrible shape they are worthless to us.
TURBO CORES must be the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal stock turbo. They must be complete. We will issue you a $150 Letter-of-Credit for each acceptable core. We urgently need these cores!
If you ship to us, the post office is the cheapest method. Pack the item(s) with a note with your name, address and phone number.

Here are the options and the costs.
Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need be specifically Turbo Regal related. It can be for something for sale or something wanted.
Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.
The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.
It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.
We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.
Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,400 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,200 potential buyers.

The following information is for Joe Boyle’s 1987 Grand National that he is selling. He has owned this 1987 Grand National since 1988.
Here is a chance to own a very well cared for 1987 Grand National hardtop owned by the same owner since 1988. Joe has bene a long time customer of ours and has brought this pride and joy to several of our Open House and reunion events. This is one of the very few Grand Nationals that the SPID label (trunk label) has bene personally signed TWICE by Molly at two different Reunion events, including the last one he attended in 2007.
Joe Boyle bought this Grand National in July 1988. This car has been well maintained by Richard Clark of Burlington, NC. Car has been to several Kirban Open House events. It is basically stock and has all the brace kits installed, all new body bushings, and the window rattle kits installed by Pete Hoffman. It has recently been service by Richard Clark. Richard put a value of $33,000 on the car, however Joe is offering this car for $28,500.
It has become a daily driver for a while now and Joe is looking to sell it to someone who will enjoy it as much as he has through the years. He has the original Window Sticker. Car has 174,000 miles on it and Joe can provide you with the history of the car. Car runs extremely well and just needs a little TLC.

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
SEMI-BLACK EXTERIOR TRIM SPRAY PAINT
This spray paint is semi-black and is an excellent color match for the black-out trim moldings that was used on certain Turbo Regal models.
It is made by the same company that color matches the grey, dark blue, burgundy paint we also sell from this same source.
It dries within minutes. While many variations of semi-black exist we found this to be a very close match. Remember, no paint color is going to match trim that has been exposed for over 30 years of sun and weather.
This is ideal to do the taillight trim parts and the plastic headlight bezels.

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
