DODGE DEMON AT CHRYSLER NATIONALS CARLISLE -

Without any doubt, seeing the bold new Dodge Demon had to be the highlight of the event for Chrysler performance fans. Chrysler has set the bar mighty high with their latest Demon as a 2018 model. For a U.S. model street car, this is about as high as you can go with a street-driven car.

I am not sure if it is the fastest U.S. production for car 2018, but it must be in the top 3.

It reminds most of us of when the GNX model was produced over 30 years ago. Someone is always going to have the fastest gun in the west until someone else comes along with something better.

This Demon even redirects the air conditioning from the passenger compartment to a chiller that cools the intake air so the engine can reach peak power in the drag mode. It goes one step further, by even having a sponge to keep condensation from dripping off the AC onto the race track.

You have to tip your hat to the engineers that worked behind the scene to make this happen and get it into production. Like the Ford GT, most of us probably won’t see one of these on the road.

PHOTO 1 - We show several photos of the blue Dodge Demon that Chrysler had on display at the Chrysler Nationals in Carlisle. Notice the flares over the front and rear wheels to cover the massive tread width of the tires.

SEEING THE DEMON FOR THE FIRST TIME REMINDED ME OF SEEING THE GNX -

Seeing the Demon in person for the first time reminded me when I saw my very first GNX in the fall of 1987. I was driving our new 1987 Grand National when I spotted it in a restaurant parking lot. Naturally, I stopped and asked the hostess if she had any idea who owned the black Buick in the parking lot. I figured she would not even know what a GNX was. As luck would have it, she did know who the car belonged to as he was a regular customer.

I approached his table trying to contain my excitement and inquired about his GNX. I explained I just gotten a Grand National and was curious to compare the differences. To my surprise, he handed me the car keys and said go take it for a spin. I was in total shock as he did not know me. Standing there dumbfounded, I figure the least I could do was give him my Grand National keys as a security deposit so he could be sure that I would return with his GNX.

I could not believe my good fortune. The only down side was that it was starting to rain, which can be an issue at least with a Grand National on a wet surface. I inhaled the new car smell, admired the well-thought-out gauges that my car lacked, and then I started the car for my first test drive in a real GNX.

This was before cell phones, so I figured I would drive it all the way back to my house to show my wife as I was sure she would be surprised.

You immediately can tell the difference from a new Grand National compared to a new GNX. The suspension reacted a lot differently and the transmission shifted more positive. Those were 2 things I noticed right away.

I could not drive it hard as I didn’t want to test the boundaries of my insurance coverage, if I wrecked this borrowed GNX.

It was a unique experience. I was able to drive other GNXs since I would later buy and sell over 10 real GNXs. True story!

MILT SCHORNACK -

When I was at the recent GTOAA Nationals in Illinois I saw Milt Schornack, who I have known personally for many years. He is now 83 years old. Milt was there at the beginning with Ace Wilson Pontiac tweaking GTOs from the early days. I bought this book and, of course, had him sign it for me.

He also had 24 small HO scale GTOs done in a special paint scheme of blue and white to match his 1969 GTO that was ram air V powered. When I saw him, he had just 9 of these cars left.

At the time, he was not autographing the actual cars, I guess because nobody asked him to. I wanted them signed, so he sold me 3 of them and autographed those 3. I wanted to buy all 9 but he knew I would resell them so he limited me to 3 of them. My point is, only 9 are autographed by Milt.

In talking to him, he mentioned his mother-in-law. It made me think - he is 83 and from the conversation I figured his mother-in-law is still alive. I asked him and he said, “Yes, she is still very much alive and matter of fact she lives with us and is 103 years old.” I was shocked. Here is a guy 83 years old and his mother-in-law is still alive and living with them! He says, “It’s the glass of wine she drinks every day that keeps her mind sharp.”

PHOTO 2 - It may be hard to see but this photo shows Milt autographing the trunk lid on the Hot wheels diecast 1969 GTO. See the Rare Parts section as we have 2 of them for sale with photographic proof he signed the trunk lid.

THE 2017 CAMARO -

The 2017 Camaro marks the 50th Anniversary for this popular GM pony car. The same source I got the Hell cat banners from also sold me 2 different Camaro banners. Next week we will probably show the other Camaro banner, which I believe shows the ZL1 Camaro.

PHOTO 3 - Shows this cool GM banner related to the 50th Anniversary of the Camaro. It’s a split image of the 1967 Camaro front end on the left with the 2017 Camaro split image on the right. See the Rare Parts section for the price.

THE 2018 FORD GT -

This new GT Ford is one of the Super Cars of the world marketed by Ford and has a price tag of a cool $450,000. Figuring 6% sales tax on $450 grand, that probably equals what most every day folks pay in total for a typical average new car!

Here are some of the impressive specifications: 3.5 litre twin-turbo, 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, mid-engine, and rear wheel drive. It gets terrible gas mileage but what acceleration! A quick run of 0-60 is accomplished in a blistering 2.9 seconds. Top speed, if out running the law, is considered is 216 mph, which I am sure most cop cars fall way short of.

While a car like this may be out of your grasp, we do have one of the Ford car show banners. It shows the Ford GT in blue. See the Rare Parts section as it is for sale. If you have a friend who is buying one of these cars, this would make a nice gift! Interesting enough, I have a desk pad featuring the 2005 Ford GT in red on my desk at. It measures 15 inches by 24 inches.

PHOTO 4 - Shows the Ford GT 2018 model in blue. This banner is brand new and was used at the Auto Show in Boston this past Spring, from what I am told. It measures 3 foot by 5 foot.

UPDATE ON ULTRA RARE CARLISLE GNX BANNER -

Already since last week’s Inner Circle I have sold over half of the GNX banners I have available for sale. My contact at Carlisle is away on vacation, so until he returns I have no idea if I can even order more of them. As an Inner Circle member, you get first look at our rare items, and this GNX banner is definitely rare. I don’t know of any other source that has these for sale. The 2 Hemi-Under-Glass banners I had left sold the first day. NOTE - See photo 2 in last week’s Inner Circle to view what the GNX banner looks like.

RIP GEORGE BECKER -

George Becker recently passed away. He made his request known to his wife on where he wants his ashes to go. Because George so loved clocks and working on various clocks, he wanted his ashes interred in a cuckoo clock. My guess is, this way every hour on the hour, he could remind his wife that he was still there!

I remember years ago when my Uncle passed. His family put his car keys in his pocket, and his grave is close to the road in the cemetery. He would often meet me at night for a late snack before going home. He would buy and sell cars on the side. We shared a common interest for many years. I used to send him the National Enquirer every week when he could no longer get around.

CARNAUBA WAX -

Most of us use Carnauba wax on our cars when we detail them for a show. Turns out it is also an ingredient in Tic Tacs. When I read the ingredients on the back of the Tic Tacs, it seemed strange to me. Maybe it contributes to the shine on each Tic Tac?

CAR FOR SALE - 1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL -

1987 Grand National - exceptional condition, 30 k miles, t-tops.

Has all the options I am aware of. Car is most original with upgrades that address original design shortcomings; Monte Carlo brake system, original and up-sized wheel and tire sets, under body detailed, upgraded suspension bushings, GNX Speedometer, performance mufflers, rerouted vacuum lines, shift kit, and lowered. The stance, tire package, sound, and t-tops get the car noticed.

You won’t find a cleaner interior, underbody, motor compartment, trunk, and t-top set.

I have owned this car for 10 years. It ALWAYS starts first or second turn over out of storage.

I have not had a drive train failure requiring repair.

Don’t need to sell, but I don’t get it out enough and would like someone who is more enthusiastic to have it.

UPDATE ON THE NEW REPRODUCTION STOCK ALUMINUM RADIATORS -

The upgraded Aluminum Radiator, part #7457, is now available. You can either order on the website or call our office (215-766-7611 x 0) to be assured of getting one from this shipment. A great value over the original 30-year-old radiator, plus it’s a weight savings. We sold out of the batch we got last week and I just went back and got more this week. Seems the hotter the weather, the more popular these radiators have become!

Here is a link to this radiator on our website.

WE HAVE SOME NEAT NEW PARTS IN THE WORKS -

The other day while driving I had another idea. As you read this I have the company across from our warehouse working on a design that will work for this modification to any 1984-1987 Turbo Regal.

He is also still working on this cool garage wall project that will light up. You will be able to personalize it specifically for your use! We hope to have production later this month.

NOTE - IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO SEE THE RARE PARTS SECTION -

If you are not able to see the Rare Parts section at the end of this Inner Circle, it is because you are not an Inner Circle member, but instead are reading this on the website. You must subscribe to see the Rare Parts section each week. It would go directly to your inbox every Wednesday afternoon. It is FREE, probably one reason why nobody complains about what I write about.

Simply email - [email protected] to get on our weekly Inner Circle email.

VALVE COVER DESK TOP LAMP UPDATE -

URGENT NEED FOR CORRECT STEERING WHEEL CORES -

We have an urgent need for correct 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel cores that are not bent. They can have minor rust on the spokes but cannot be pitted. If you owe us a steering wheel core, please send it in to get your core deposit back.

In order to continue this service, we have had to raise the core price. Without cores, owners can’t get a redone leather-wrapped steering wheel. Help us continue this needed service. We now issue a Letter of Credit for $100, if you have a correct 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel core.

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

1984-1987 Regal (All models Including Turbo Regal) -
Drop-In Flush-mounted PIONEER AM/FM CD, AUX, MP3 player
complete with Harness and GM Flush Mount Kit

Some Turbo Regal owners may want to upgrade their radio to any of the various aftermarket radios available today.

One of our long-time customers, who owns a Turbo Regal, operates a mobile radio shop. He has made up this special kit using a brand new Pioneer DEH-150MP radio. He then pre-wires it to a special harness that will plug into the original Regal radio harness, so none of the factory wires get cut and spliced.

This Pioneer radio comes with full instructions and a remote. You must re-use the original factory brackets that attaches to the sides of the mounting bezel. The main photo shows the factory Regal brackets on the Pioneer radio. The radio does NOT come with those brackets. That photo shows the original radio brackets that you need to re-use from your stock radio to make this new mounting kit fit flush in the radio bezel opening. We do NOT include these brackets.

You simply attach the original radio brackets to the side of the kit. It comes with the proper hardware to secure the factory brackets to the outer radio bezel.

You can also buy the GM Flush Mount Kit by itself, part #7802. Then you can buy any aftermarket radio and use that mounting kit to have a flush mounted radio in your Regal. Most mounting kits do not use the factory brackets nor does it allow the radio to sit flush in the dash opening.

Another excellent replacement for any interior restoration.

1984-1987 Buick Regal (All models including Turbo Regal) -
RUBBER STOPPERS (13) SET

Over time, these small detail rubber stoppers can be missing, become hard, or broken. A careless repaint can also create overspray on the stoppers on the doors.

Just like original 30-year-old tires that become hard, so can these critical rubber stoppers, which makes them useless.

Although a minor part, these stoppers help keep the car rattle free, especially the 2 on the trunk lid. Once these are adjusted properly, the trunk lid will not rattle.

This set includes a total of 13 pieces - 5 under-the-hood stoppers, 4 for the door jamb area, 2 for the trunk lid, and 2 for the gas door.

Each set includes:
3 Round stoppers. These are the critical stoppers for under the hood. In most cases due to engine heat, these have become hard and are no longer pliable.
2 Stoppers for the fender-to-hood lip.
4 Stoppers for the door jamb area. A sloppy paint job can leave overspray on the 4 located on the door jambs.
2 Trunk lid stoppers so you can adjust the trunk lid to seat correctly. The originals may be missing or broken.
2 Stoppers for the gas door.

Even the rubber stoppers under the hood of my personal car were rock hard and needed to be replaced!

Unfortunately, the company we get these from does not offer a complete correct set for our cars. I have to include some from another source to make this set correct for the 1984-1987 Regal models.

Excellent replacement stoppers for any interior and exterior restoration.

1984-1987 Buick Regal (Including Turbo Regal) -
GM FLUSH MOUNT KIT FOR AFTERMARKET RADIO

Some Turbo Regal owners may want to upgrade their radio to any of the various aftermarket radios available today.

Most of the radio mounting kits sold today for doing an aftermarket radio installation do not allow the radio to sit back in the factory bezel.

The end result is it looks tacky. This special mounting kit uses the factory radio side brackets which attach to the side of this mounting kit.

By using this method it allows any aftermarket radio/CD, etc. player to sit flush with the factory radio bezel. As the one photo shows it accepts two different size radio units, which will work with most Pioneer units as well as many of the other aftermarket brands.

You must have the factory brackets, which we show in the lower center photo. Those brackets do NOT come with the new kit.

This kit was made possible by one of our Turbo Regal customers who is in the radio installation business and has it in his personal Turbo-T.

See part #7803 if you want to purchase a complete Pioneer radio with the mounting kit included. That part number also shows you how it will look once installed in a Turbo Regal.

Photo on the top left shows all the pieces included in this kit.

Photo on the lower left shows the insert installed into the main housing, which you may use depending on the size of the radio you are installing.

Photo on the lower center shows the original radio brackets that you need to re-use from your stock radio to make this new mounting kit fit flush in the radio bezel opening. We do NOT include these brackets.

Photo on the right photo shows this kit installed on a Pioneer radio/CD player, so it sits flush in the radio bezel opening.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
SPEEDOMETER CABLE GROMMET
REPRODUCTION ALUMINUM BRACKET

Over time, the original speedometer cable grommet bracket can break, since it’s only plastic. This reproduction bracket is made in aluminum, so it will last.

It is the only part that holds the grommet in place on the firewall to secure the speedometer cable.

I do not know if cars with the digital dash had this bracket or not. Regular Regals did not use this bracket, from what I can determine. I am also not aware if the 1984 and 1985 Turbo Regals used it. It can be difficult to see because it’s somewhat hidden by the harness behind the engine, which is also held in place with a metal bracket.

I have no idea why Buick used a plastic bracket secured by two 7mm screws for this connection. Check this bracket on your car. There’s probably a good chance it is broken.

NOTE - You can paint this bracket semi-gloss black or satin black to match the original bracket.
Another excellent replacement for any engine restoration.
