Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 08-08-2018 -

THREE NEW COPPER GASKETS FOR THE 1986-1987 TURBO REGALS AVAILABLE –

See the New parts section for details and link to our website. Copper gaskets can withstand higher temperatures and don’t become distorted. They are also less likely to blow out. They do cost a few bucks more, but the advantages outweigh the cost factor. The 3 in copper we offer are for the EGR valve, the exhaust manifold to the turbo, and the exhaust manifolds to cylinder heads.

Here is a link to these new copper gaskets on our website.

PHOTO 1 – We show all 3 new copper gaskets. These are available now. See the New Parts section for ling to our website, part numbers and pricing.

UPDATE ON DARRELL’S NEXT PROJECT –

After attending the recent GTOAA National Meet and seeing the one 1967 GTO body sitting on a 2005/2006 GTO that is the combination Darrell plans to take for his next project. Originally he was going to go with a late-model Camaro.

He located a 2005 GTO with the LS2 drivetrain. He worked a deal with the salvage yard in Virginia to keep most of the body panels since Darrell basically wanted a rolling chassis with drivetrain and interior. The car he got only has 70,000 miles on it.

For several reasons the resurrection of the GTO name plate in 2004 through 2006 did not create the buzz in the market that Pontiac hoped for. It went away after the 2006 model. The entire Pontiac line soon followed. The one late model Pontiac that seems to be in demand is the G8 GT. This is a very impressive sedan and a great value if you can find one. This is just my opinion. I missed one few years back owned by a woman lawyer had high miles but was every bit like new.

Within a few days of taking delivery of his 2005 GTO, he and John gutted the 2005 GTO of the entire interior and some of the body panels. His goal is to have it road worthy by next summer.

PHOTO 2 – We show various photos of this gutted 2005 GTO. I plan to send photos to several magazines that may want to follow this project from start to finish. Notice in the last photo on the right the complex rear seat brace that was in this GTO.

HATBORO CAR SHOW –

Every year I attend this popular show where they shut down the main street in Hatboro and line up on both sides of the street over 350 plus cars. The weather is a critical part of the success of any car show. The weather for last Saturday the day of the Hatboro show was absolutely picture perfect. This was one of the few Saturdays this summer that was picture perfect. I used to be a Judge for this annual event as my buddy ran the show for several years. It is pretty hard to pick 50 deserving cars from such a wide mix of cars and trucks.

It is also a time that I run into many old time friends. I even ran into Ray Frattone. Many of you may remember Ray from years ago as he had a hot rod Lincoln and raced Trey Crease who was driving his Turbo-T. Ray is now 81 years young and has one of those Caddy V coupes with the rare 6-speed manual shifter. We should all be that lucky at 81!

I must have counted at least 15 Monte Carlo SS models all 1984-1988 versions. One was for sale that had been restored several years ago. It had a price tag of over 22 grand. The restoration was not up to my standards. I think the best looking Monte Carlo SS models are the white ones with the blue or burgundy bench seat interiors. It just looks like most of them were burgundy on burgundy.

I only saw one Turbo Regal a 1986 T-Type. Seeing this particular car was a first for me. I was talking to a guy near the Turbo Regal when this person came up to me and asked if I was Dennis Kirban. I said yes he then said this is my T-Type that I bought from a guy in Altoona, PA. Among all the paperwork is proof that it was one of your cars!

He had framed in the trunk the actual ad from the Grand News of this car! Turns out I had sold this car originally to a local guy who lived in Hatboro. He sold it to someone I assume in Altoona, PA who then resold it. This car has all the paperwork including the original window sticker. What makes it kind of unusual is, it came with a power antenna and a radio delete meaning it had no radio when it was ordered. What also made this car unusual is it had a dark grey exterior against a blue interior. Most grey cars had grey interiors. Car had the trunk kit with power trunk release. The car had crank windows! This is a very unusual combination.

The current owner was glad to meet me and I signed the Grand News ad for him. In my haste I did not take any photos of the car. I did take a picture of his framed display board with showed all the original paperwork including a letter from me to the person I sold it to plus the original Grand News ad.

PHOTO 3 – The top left photo shows his framed display that shows the window sticker, broadcast sheet, the ad from Grand News and a letter from me giving all the info on the car to the person I sold it to originally. I sold it in August of 1997 for $7995. Car was original with 71,000 actual miles on it. I think the car now has like 84,000 miles. The current owner has modified the engine. I don’t know what he paid for the car nor do I recall when he said he bought it. The top right photo shows the actual ad in the August 1997 Grand News where it says SOLD. The last 2 photos are when I had the car back in 1997. One shows the engine and the other shows looking down the driver’s side of the car. It’s good to see that the owners kept all the related paperwork to go with the car each time the car was sold. It is so important now with the cars being 30 years old or older.

Buyers want that documentation. In some cases it may clinch the sale over a similar car that lacks documentation.

1935 BUICK BUSINESS COUPE –

Long time readers may recall when I found this 1935 Buick coupe in a rug factory in Tennessee. The guy had a 1987 Grand National that I was buying plus this 1935 Buick coupe and a 1970 GSX. I called Mike O’Neil when I was down in the building telling him about the 1935 Buick coupe and the GSX thinking me may want to buy either or both. He ended up buying both.
Darrell put in the 1986-1987 drivetrain and Mike O’Neil had his guys do the interior and exterior.
The next photos show the results.

PHOTO 4 – The top left shows a view of the exterior of this beautiful 1935 Buick coupe. The exterior has been left basically stock. The top right shows the engine which is a very tight fit under the hood. The bottom left shows the bucket seats redone in leather and has the power six logo embroidered on the headrests. The bottom right photo shows the dash which has been fitted with late model aftermarket gauges. Finding a 1930s Buick coupe today is quite rare. Fords and Chevrolets are far more popular and abundant.

MORE GM BANNERS SUBMITTED FOR GM APPROVAL –

My wife Eileen just finished up 4 more GM banners that we submitted to our supplier to get them GM approved. We are offering our readers first, the opportunity to buy the actual sample banner. We just did the 1964 GTO, 1968 GTO, 1970 GTO, and the 1970 Buick GS. Most of these are either based on actual magazine ads or the original sales brochure. Most are 2 ft by 3 ft. The 1970 GTO due it its original layout is a different size.

You must email me direct - [email protected] if any of these are of interest. I can email you a photo. Remember I only have one of each sample.

ANTHER VW 21 WINDOW BUS COMES UP FOR AUCTION THIS MONTH –

One of our customers Jim Wilson informed me that Bonhams has an auction August 24th at the Quail Lodge in California. The fee just to register as a bidder is $150 per person. This cuts down on the tire kickers! They list each vehicle with a projected selling price. The 1966 VW bus with 21 windows is projected to sell between $140,000 and $180,000.

It just boggles my mind that these VW buses from the 1960s can fetch these outrageous prices. Same auction shows a 1969 Shelby GT500 convertible that projected would not bring that nearly that much money. Also a 1956 Chevrolet Nomad is project to bring half as much as the VW bus.

This proves that having a high performance car from the 1960s is not the only ticket to a high value vehicle.

JUST ONE LEFT OF THE LIMITED UNIQUE BUICK BANNERS -

The GM licensed company we deal with made 2 banners that they don’t currently plan to continue to make and they sent them to me. Only have the one Buick Motorsports left. It has the all red turbo-six logo. The price is $39.95 and $10 shipping to the basic 48 states. See photo 4 in the 07-08-2108 Inner Circle.

ONE OF THE “BEST OF THE BEST” GNXs FOR SALE -

During my search last month for a GNX, I did hear from one-long-time customer of ours that still has his GNX from brand new. It has not been advertised as of yet, that I am aware of. They don’t want to really advertise it and be bombarded with low ball offers.

If you have $127,500 to spend and you want what may be the best GNX, this could be the one. The actual miles are under 600. It still has the New Jersey new car inspection on it. This car is absolutely like it came from the showroom.

Besides the usual items, such as the Window Sticker, jacket, and book, the seller also has the complete numbered #171 series of the Epitome Exclusives Ted Hirsch did many years ago. Besides this, he has all the original related paperwork, various posters, and all the magazines from back in the day related to the GNX project.

If this perks your interest and you got the available funds, email me - [email protected] and I can provide more specific details. There are less expensive GNXs available, but when you add up the extras and actual miles, this deal may be tough to beat.

GOOD NEWS - WE ARE ACCEPTING CLASSIFIED ADS -

Good news - We now accept Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.

Here are the options and the costs.

Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need be specifically Turbo Regal related. It can be for something for sale or something wanted.

Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.

The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.

It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.

We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.

Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,200 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,200 potential buyers.

My Rare Parts section is only viewed by those that subscribe. Subscription is free, so complaints on what I write are nonexistent!

Ads submitted properly by the previous Sunday would appear that next Wednesday in the weekly Inner Circle. Ads must be submitted by email to - [email protected]

Payment by credit card must be done by phone to our office 215-766-1611 x 0.

You must subscribe to see the Rare Parts section each week. It would go directly to your inbox every Wednesday afternoon. It is FREE, probably one reason why nobody complains about what I write about. Simply email - [email protected] - to get on our weekly Inner Circle email.

EMAILS TO KIRBAN PERFORMANCE -

NOTE- If you email us and do NOT get a timely reply, be sure to check your “SPAM” folder. Some emails do not go thru.

If you need to email us, use - [email protected]

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

If you have a tip or a discovery that you found that works on your Turbo Regal, drop us an email giving us the details so we can pass the info on to our readers. Remember, even with my knowledge, I don’t know it all. Simply email me at - [email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN –

It’s best to examine your Turbo Regal lower body bushings. The longer you put off installing the ones that Buick did not install the tougher it can be to back out the special grade 8 bolts. If the cage nut spins it requires the interior floor to be opened up and welding is needed to secure the cage nut.

CORES NEEDED -

Here is the information on our credits for cores.

URGENT NEED - Powermaster brake units. The must be complete. We will now issue you a Letter of Credit for $150 for each acceptable core. We currently will not buy any powermaster units outright, only Letter of Credit towards parts.

If you ship to us, the post office is the cheapest method. Pack the item(s) with a note with your name, address and phone number. These are the only 2 items we are currently accepting as cores.

and 1987 Buick Regal (All Models) -
GM Licensed - Reproduction “SPID - RPO” CODES TRUNK LABEL

We offer GM Licensed reproduction SPID-RPO Labels, made by ECS Automotive Concepts. ECS also makes the GM Licensed VIN Door Decals we offer.

If you are having the exterior restored or if your label is damaged or faded, this is the time to replace it.

We need to have a copy of an original label in order to make either label.

NOTE - GM started to use the 1987 format partially through the 1986 model year. The reproduction you order will match whichever is on your car.

The 1984-1985-1986 labels have GM part #14065987. This label will be available at a later date.

The 1987 label has GM part #14085266 and is currently available.

IMPORTANT - They can only do it if you have an existing original label that you can scan or clearly photograph and email to us - [email protected]

They can NOT create a new label from scratch.

However, at some point GM did use the 1987 format on the late production Regals in 1986. So, it is important you see what GM part number is on your trunk label in the lower right hand corner of the gray bar.

The 1984 model was the very first year GM started to use the Regular Production Order (aka RPO) SPID label. In all cases, this label was put on the inside of the trunk lid. Generally, the 1984-1985-1986 was on the left side of the trunk lid and the 1987 label was on the right side of the trunk lid.

This label lists all the codes in alphabetical order, both options and features that came in your Regal. It also has your car’s 17-digit VIN number and the paint code.

Since it is VIN related, this is a critical label for any restoration. If your car’s label is faded or torn, we can get a exact reproduction through ECS Automotive Concepts.

Currently, we can only get the 1987 SPID label - GM #14085266. They are still working on creating the format for the 1984-1985-1986 label - GM #14065987.

Canadian delivered cars had a different SPID RPO label that is not available at this time.

NOTE - Allow 5-7 days for delivery. Label is sent Priority Mail from ECS Automotive Concepts

This is another excellent replacement for any exterior restoration.

Buick Regal Trunk Label SPID RPO Codes - Buick trunk label - BACKGROUND INFO –

The Regular Production Order (aka RPO) codes can be found on the Service Parts Identification (aka SPID) label on the trunk of your Buick Regal.

Starting with the 1984 model year GM began implementing the SPID label program which entailed using an information label listing all of the options and equipment to help technicians service GM vehicles.

They not only included the RPO codes but also Buick paint and trim codes along with such information as spring and sometimes sub assembly codes.

There were several different labels used throughout the four years that the (most common & favored) Buick Turbo Regal was built.

The labels used for 1984, 1985 and partially through 1986 was a white label identified by the part #14065987 in the lower right corner of the label.

These labels also have a protective clear tape over them.

Cars built for the Canadian market utilized this same basic label but with a French language description on the lower half with the part #14065989 in the lower right corner.

Part way through 1986 and for the model year 1987 GM changed the label and it now has the part #14085266 in the lower right corner. The protective clear tape was also not used anymore.

Information on 1987 Canadian market cars is not available at this time.

By ordering a certain option on the vehicle, or ordering a special package, the codes for these options/packages generate many additional codes that are all part of that specific package. These codes are then automatically forced onto the specific build order, and also listed on the SPID label.

Here is a link to this label on our website.

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] - I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING –

The east coast has had record breaking amount of rain over the last 60 days. It reminds me of Vietnam with the rain and high humidity. In Vietnam your clothes were damp when you put them on in the morning. The ground has had no chance to dry out.
