Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 11-07-2018 –

GM LICENSED GRAND NATIONAL T-SHIRTS –

We struck a deal with the company that has the GM license agreement for the Buick line of accessories, which includes T-shirts.

When it comes to Buick licensed accessories, the pickings are rather slim compared to the popular Chevrolet lineup.

Even in the Buick product line, very few items exist for the Grand National models as most of the product line is on older vintage Buick logos and formats.

They have 3 different color Grand National T-shirts available. We will be selling all three versions. White (which is the one we had 4 of the other week), black, as well as gray. All three colors have the Grand National logo on the front. We placed an initial order and expect to have them in stock shortly. See New Parts section for more details, part numbers and pricing.

PHOTO 1 – We show a picture of all 3 of the available Grand National GM licensed T-shirts. We will have them available in the 3 popular sizes Large, X-Large, and XX-Large size.

Here is a link to these new shirts on our website.

IT SEEMED LIKE OLD TIMES –

Buying this 1987 Grand National the other week, brought back memories of the 325-plus Turbo Regals I was buying over a dozen years ago. I personally detailed every one of them. I also installed all the front connecting and frame braces. I also did either the 4 or 6 missing lower body bushings, depending on which ones were not installed by Buick. The difference is that back then the cars were not as old so the body bolts usually came right out. The downside was my garage back then had a low ceiling, so I did everything lying on the garage floor or outside if it was nice.

This time around at our new house I have a lift, which makes it a lot easier to not only do the body bushings, but check things out on the underside of the car. I can also clean the wheels easier since I can use the lift to position wheels at eye level. At age 71, I no longer want to be lying on the ground working on these cars.

This Grand National actually has my son’s early first design square tubing front connecting brace on it. We went to a tube style on the later connecting brace. The only suspension upgrade the car was missing was the 4 lower body bushings. I call them missing body bushings because Buick simply never listed them in those positions in their parts book.

Problems can occur the longer you wait to address this issue. The grade 8 bolt can work itself out and fall out. Or worse yet, years of rust can freeze that 13 mm grade 8 bolt, making it very costly to remove. Being it’s under the car, you simply can’t squirt blaster or WD-40 upward with the hopes it loosens the bolt.

Flip the car on the roof and WD-40 would do the trick. This method is not recommended since you would now have a crushed roof! I would not be writing this if when I was doing this project one or more of the bolts proved impossible for me to loosen successfully.

If you are unsuccessful, the cage nut spins on the bolt and creates a new problem. You then are faced with the issue of cutting a hole in the floor and having a new cage nut welded. If you have limited skills, like I do, you need someone like my son to cut a hole in the floor and weld a new cage nut in place. The average cost would run $100 or more, since you would have to lift up the carpet and anything else near where the welding would have to be done.

There is no advantage to putting off this project of installing the 4 lower bushing in your 1984-1987 Turbo Regal. I got lucky - 3 of the bolts came right out with hardly any effort. The one on the passenger side under the center of the door required a bit more effort.

A typical length breaker bar was not enough, at least for me to break it loose. However, the 3-foot handle for my floor jack with the open hole at one end was the perfect solution to use as a breaker bar. I was able to gently back out the one grade 8 bolt that was giving me the problem.

The ones by the rear axle were the easiest, which seemed strange because of their location. The driver’s side mount is close to the fuel filter. Another item, if neglected for many years, could pose a problem to remove and replace. Remember, GM saved a ton of money by not painting anything on the underside of the car. (That would have been a nice option instead of undercoating for the northern climates). Unfortunately, Buick didn’t contact me for that suggestion.

PHOTO 2 – The top left photo shows me starting to remove the factory bolt on the missing body bushing under the center of the driver’s door. You can see the actual gap between the metal washer and the frame. The trick is, since the original bolts were all good, I reused them and the rust colored washer so all the body bushings matched under the car. This way nothing looked like it was replaced. The top left photo shows that same location with the new rubber bushing installed.

The bottom left photo shows the tools I used for the project note the jack handle that I used as a breaker bar. The bottom right photo shows the rectangle connecting brace and part of the front frame braces and the original baffling which is all intact. Notice you see no oil build up on the frame or bracket to the intercooler. This car has never been run hard! Even the screen for the intercooler is still intact.

The part numbers for the 4-piece bushing kit is #7306 and includes new grade 8 bolts. The cost is $28.95. The part number for the 6-piece bushing kit is #7307 and also comes with grade 8 bolts. The cost is $39.95. We also sell a washer repair kit #7309 for $10. This kit is needed if you have extensive rust and need to weld in a washer to make a smaller hole for the bushings to seat properly. I can’t stress it enough, the more upgrades you can make to your suspension to stiffen the car up, not only it will ride and drive better but it helps keep the body from twisting, which leads to stress cracks either in the roof pillar area or inside the door jamb area.

FEW TIPS THAT ARE FRESH IN MY MIND FROM WORKING ON THIS GRAND NATIONAL -

Now that I have a fairly original Grand National in my pole building, I could write another book on the small little tricks and things to look for when buying one of these cars. More than ever, owners today are chasing down parts and information on what is correct and not correct.

I certainly have the experience. On detailing I always start at the trunk area. I even do this with every bid lot car we have been buying weekly through a local small country dealership. The main reason is that was the easiest area to tackle first. What would slow me down on the Turbo Regals was if the jack was not properly secured. Most owners think the spare tire filler panel sits on top of the carpet. This is incorrect. That spare tire filler panel is there to keep the carpet from falling into the spare tire well.

That flimsy black thin trunk carpet that Buick used was never cut properly to seat around the spare tire. If it is, you may own one of my cars! I would trim that black carpet on every single Turbo Regal that did not have the optional trunk kit. That flimsy carpet is one of the shortcomings in the Turbo Regals.

This Grand National has a power trunk release and most times that single 10mm bolt will be lose. Tighten that and you eliminate one rattle. This one was lose. Adjust the two rubber stoppers on the back edge of the trunk lid and you eliminate another rattle. Forget about lining up the trunk lid to the rear quarters that alignment can’t be fixed perfectly. Rear seat braces are a great upgrade to make even if the car is a solid roof car.

Remember, almost everything can be duplicated today for your project, the only exception is original paint. Having all original paint was a huge selling point with this 1987 Grand National.

1986-1987 GRAND NATIONAL WHEELS FOR SALE –

Remember, only those that are subscribers get to see the full description of these wheels and prices of these wheels in the Rare Parts section.

PHOTO 3 – The one photo shows 3 of the original Grand National wheels. Each of these wheels are very nice with bright chrome, however they do have teeth marks from a tire machine on the chrome surface. None are dented or curb hit. Also, these wheels have been stored inside for many years. The photo of the single Grand National wheel is super mint, almost like new and has zero teeth marks on the chrome. Back side and bead area is also mint. It would pass for almost brand new. Again, only subscribers see the Rare Buick Parts section, which lists the price.

HERE IS MORE GOOD NEWS AND CHANGES TO WEEKLY INNER CIRCLE –

We are going to have another category starting this week in our weekly Inner Circle as we get certain items for sale. The new category will be items (car parts) for sale NOT Turbo Buick related. This category with prices will be visible even to non-subscribers that simply read the weekly Inner Circle on the internet. This gives us a wider market for these non-Buick parts. Remember, only subscribers get to see the Buick used and NOS rare parts and their prices to make a purchase.

Since I go to various junkyards as time and weather permits I turn up other items and will offer them at extremely good prices. One such example was the other week with the emergency kit and the first aid kit that we sold.

Next week we will be posting our annual Christmas Specials. Here are just a few items that will be included in the Christmas Specials. One special will include the complete 22 body bushing kit, the core support bushing kit and the proper grade 8 bolts to make the project complete. Also in the Christmas Special will be the Pypes Exhaust System, and the 16 by 8 style GNX wheels.

All these items and others will be posted next week under the annual Christmas Specials.

COMING SOON – 1986 GRAND NATIONAL – POSSIBLY FOR PARTS -

I just made a deal to purchase a one-owner 1986 Grand National hardtop with less than 90,000 original miles on it. This car may end up being just for parts due to its condition. I can’t make that decision until my buddy gets the car to our house. I purchased this Grand National from a long-time customer. The car has been sitting outside for a number of years.

NON-BUICK PARTS - FOR SALE –

I have several items for sale this first week. In each case the price includes shipping to the basic 48 states. Perhaps you have a relative or a good friend with one of these cars. All these items are extremely nice and priced to sell. Again, Paypal is the preferred method of payment. You must email me direct - [email protected] to purchase or check if item(s) are still available. All these items are bargain priced and extremely nice otherwise I would not bother hauling them out of the junkyard.

C-1 - See photo 4 in this issue. A pair of original old-style Corvette valve covers. They were blasted and painted about 5 years ago. I am not sure what years they fit. The price is just $69.95 for the pair, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states.

C-2 – See photo 4 in this issue. I have 4 of these Cadillac accessory trunk mats. I have them in the trunk of all our cars and use them in the pole building to keep any leaks from getting on the concrete floor. These trunk mats were a Cadillac option around the late 1980s. The mat is reversible rubber on the one side with the Caddy crest logo and grey cloth material on the other side. The trunk mat measures 33 inches by 36 inches, almost a perfect square. Mat is the perfect size for most trunks to protect your original trunk carpet. They are charcoal grey in color. Each one is almost like new with no stains. The price is just $34.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states. These mats are very high quality.

C-3 - For the very popular 2001-2004 Honda Civics with the grey/black interior, I have a full set of factory carpet savers that are mint. Fronts have the embroidered Civic word on them. The back is a single one piece. Nice thing about Honda Civic mats is they go edge to edge in the car! The price for the full set as described is $36.95. Shipping is included to the basic 48 states.

C-4 – For the Subaru Outback, a full set (4) embroidered with the word Outback factory carpet savers that are absolutely mint. Grey black color weave look. They are probably 1990s vintage. The price is just $38.95 for the full set, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states.

NOTE - If requested we can supply photos of any item in this section if you are unsure as to whether it will fit your application.

PHOTO 4 – We show the original Corvette valve covers that have been blasted and painted. Also the optional accessory Cadillac trunk mat. I use them in several of our trunks as well as under some of the cars in our pole building. It’s the perfect size for under the engine bay area of your Turbo Regal.

UPDATE ON 1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL - FOR SALE –

The first day we had about 8-10 requests for more photos of this 1987 Grand National we recently purchased. Within 24 hours we had a deposit from a customer of ours in the midwest. If all goes according to plan, the car will be going to the midwest the end of this month.

I was pleasantly surprised that the interest for this Grand National was that strong almost immediately, since winter is fast approaching.

ANOTHER 1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -

As of this writing this 1987 Grand National is still available. This example has a great history. I sold it thru O'Neil Buick/GMC back in May of 2000. At that time, it had 26,000 miles on it. It features all original paint, less than 60,000 miles. Very well optioned and has the desirable factory astroroof option.

I just learned of this car so I don't have much info. Car comes with a copy of the original window sticker. Car appears to be 99% stock.

The trunk ID label (SPID) has been signed by Molly twice as the car was at both Reunion events Molly attended for us.

The price is $24,973 however, email Kevin direct at - koneilbuickgmc.com for more information and a special price for any of our customers. Here is a link to this car on their website - https://www.oneilbuickgmc.com/VehicleSearchResults?searchQuery=1987

We actually owned this car twice - first in May of 2000 when I got it from the original owner with 26,000 miles on it. The last owner bought it again from us and Mike O’Neil back in 2005 when it had about 55,000 actual miles. Car has always been owned by collectors.

Remember, as a customer of ours, you would get a special price on this original 1987 Grand National.

HERE IS A GREAT GIFT IDEA FOR CHRISTMAS –

I recently discovered a product at a GMC dealership gift shop. Many GMC dealerships do not have much of a gift shop if they have one at all. While you have many cheaper choices for a portable power bank to charge tablets, smart phones, etc., most are cheap looking plastic ones. The real concern is most that are not UL certified. Being electrical, UL certification is critical. UL certification reduces the risk of fire or explosions related to lithium batteries. Almost anything electrical you buy today carries the UL certification. To have peace of mind, the UL certification is critical for an electrical product to have. I know GM would not offer anything electrical unless it has the UL certification. I know this for sure as a buddy of mine was working on an electrical project and needed GM approval. He was told his product would require a UL certification in order for GM to approve it.

The power bank we offer has that critical UL certification and also looks very elegant - two features many of the cheap ones lack. It is compact in size 2- ¾ inches wide by 3 inches high by only ¾ inches thick. The power bank has a metal outer shell with chrome edges and a grey textured finish front and back. On the front in small print is the word “Denali.” It is GM licensed. The supplier to GM has a limited number of these on hand. Four small lights on the front show you see how much power is available. Capacity is 4000mAh, Input DC 5V/1000mA, output DC 5v/100mA.

It will charge a typical smart phone 2-3 times before needing a charge. The power bank recharges using a USB port.

This certified GM licensed power bank makes a great gift for a spouse or a friend. It is far superior then the plastic ones you find at most stores. Plus, it has the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certification meaning it has passed all the proper tests required to obtain that certification.

PRICING – The price for one GM licensed power bank UL certified is $41.95, which includes shipping to the basic 48 states by mail. Want to buy more than 1? Add $36 for each additional charger with no additional shipping costs. NOTE - PA residents add 6% sales tax to total. Buy with confidence. To order this power bank call our office direct - 215-766-1611X0 - ask for Christina. Because the supplier has a limited inventory, we have no plans to add to our product line. Makes a unique gift that you can feel confident buying since it has the UL certification. I plan to use several as Christmas gifts. We already have several in stock for immediate delivery with more on order.

See Photo 4 in 10-31-2018 Inner Circle issue for photo of this UL certified GM licensed classic looking power bank. They are in stock for immediate delivery.

TURBO ENGINE DESCRIPTION MANUAL UPDATE –

In 10-17-2018 Inner Circle, we showed 4 pages from the 1987 Turbo Regal Engine Description Manual. I had gotten these sheets years ago from a source at Buick who helped me with information for my book. I just went through all my files and I found 50 different pages from this 1987 Turbo Engine Description Manual.

I have had several requests for copies so I had a number of copies made. Pages are in the correct numbered order and spiral bound for easy reading. The price is just $22.95, which includes shipping by mail. If this interests you, email me direct - [email protected] I only plan to run these once. Paypal payment is preferred.

One thing this Turbo Engine Description Manual does show you is the original part numbers for the attaching hardware and brackets etc. We still have a few copies available. You must email me direct for this booklet. We have about 5 copies left and then they are gone!

MY TRY AT THE CAR RENTAL BUSINESS –

I happen to think of this the other day. Over the years, I have actually rented out two of my cars. The first one was to my youngest sister back when she was going to be a senior in high school (She is 14 years younger than me). She was going to take her senior year at another school and would need a car. She didn’t want to buy one as she knew she would be going off to college the following Fall.

She was very independent and did not want to burden our parents or borrow money to buy a car for the short time she would need a car. She approached me as she knew I was dealing with various cars at the time. Most of the cars I was buying and selling were 440 Mopars and GTOs, not exactly cars I wanted my 17-year-old sister to be driving to school.

At the time, I did have the perfect car for her - a 1962 Pontiac Lemans coupe. It was a cute little car, great on gas and in mint condition that was perfect to rent to her. She recalls paying me about $25 a month to rent the car. She insisted on paying me each month, which she faithfully did. It also enabled her to have a job at a restaurant after school and for that next entire summer before she went off to college. Naturally, I made sure I had insurance on the car!

The second time I did a car rental was when we lived on Sugarbottom Road in Furlong. Our neighbors who not only made parts for us, but also let me park Turbo Regals at their house while they spent the entire winter at that Naples, Florida house. His thinking was with various cars on their driveway, it would always look like someone was home! His wife always drove a late-model Cadillac. He, on the other hand, had a diesel-powered Oldsmobile sedan, I think it was around a 1985 model. If I recall, they only made these diesel powered Oldsmobiles a few years.

One day the starter went out in his diesel Oldsmobile. The diesel engine required a special starter and he had to send it out somewhere to get rebuilt. He knew I had several cars at the time and approached me about renting one for a few weeks. He was an older person wanting to rent one of my cars that was used to driving a diesel Oldsmobile.

I rented him one of the automatic 5.0 notchback Mustangs I had at the time. He loved it. I think secretly he was hoping it would take more than a few weeks to get his starter back for his diesel-powered Oldsmobile sedan. I can’t remember what I charged him each week, but again he insisted on paying me each week. I am sure there was a vast difference in acceleration between the 5.0 Mustang and the diesel-powered Oldsmobile sedan.

True stories…

1966 GTO ACRYLIC PICTURE FOR SALE -

We also have a picture of a 1966 GTO on a piece of acrylic. I bought this several years ago at Carlisle. It measures approximately 15” by 20”. It is based on the box cover of the 1966 GTO slot car. That slot car has a value today of about $500, if you got one unbuilt in the original box. (I have one in my private collection). Either item makes for a nice unique gift.

See Photo 2 in 10-03-2018 Inner Circle. Contact our office if you would like to order – 215-766-1611 x 0. This is a NEW LOWER PRICE $29.95 and $12 shipping.

REMEMBER THE VIDEO PROFILE THAT WAS DONE LAST YEAR? –

Steve, the producer of that video, is now producing an automotive radio show in the Philadelphia market and is currently looking for sponsorship. Sponsors will receive commercial air time during the program as well as web and video presence. Because it’s the inaugural season of the show, rates are low compared to standard radio rates.

Business owners, particularly those in the Philadelphia region who are looking for a new way to advertise, should contact Steve at - [email protected] check out the website at -www.carsmartsradio.com

They are slated to begin broadcasting at 11am for one hour on 610ESPN radio. That Saturday slot will be the time slot for at least until May, with a few preemptions for football and basketball (Villanova).

The radio station kept the rates the same for Steve even though we’re now going to the larger radio station. This is very exciting!

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me direct - [email protected] I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again.
