09-23-2020 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 09-23-2020 -

TWO NEW PRODUCTS FROM US -

We were recently contacted by a company in Canada that makes various body side moldings. They recently produced the pattern for the body side molding option that Buick offered as an option on their black Turbo Regals. The SPID code is B88 and it was offered all 4 years. The price in my Buick Price Directory for those years ranged from $55 to $60 for that option. The one we've been selling for over 10 years was very close to being a dead match to the original. This new version by a different company has gone the extra mile and it is virtually the same. The one we used to sell always existed and was the closest we found several years ago.

We now have this new reproduction in stock. Each one comes with a diagram with the measurements so it can be installed to match the original position on the car. The part number remains the same #6793. The price however, is now $79.95 plus shipping.

CLICK HERE - To see this body side molding on our website.

The other new part we have is for the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals a billet oil fill tube and breather. This is a straight design and replaces #1569. The price for this all billet constructed one is $46.95 plus shipping. This Is made by the same company that makes our very popular billet adjustable fuel regulators for Turbo Regals, Mustangs, and Porsche. It is a lot sturdier than the spun aluminum version it replaces. The overall height is about the same as the factory angled one at 4-½ inches tall. This may not be on our website yet. If not you must call Christina 215-766-1611 to order it.

PHOTO 1 - The top left photo shows the box of the new black body side molding. The top right photo shows the new billet oil fill tube, breather, and silicone seal. The bottom left and bottom right photos show this new billet oil fill tube and breather on the 7,700 mile Grand National.

A FEW MORE GOOD USED TURBO PARTS FOR SALE -

All these parts can be found under the rare Parts section. Everything is priced to sell quickly. Used parts continue to be difficult to find as these cars we all love.

PHOTO 2 - The top left photo shows an original GM brake bowl. The top right photo shows a good used powermaster reservoir lid with gasket, both the powermaster molded formed hose with clamps, the metal pressure hose and a brake switch. The bottom left photo shows a glossy black powder coated powermaster bracket with a new foam gasket and the two brackets that secure the motor to the cylinder. Both powder coated glossy black. The bottom right photo shows a pair of 1986-1987 powder coated silver valve covers with a new oil fill tube gasket.

CHICAGOLAND CHAPTER GSCA LICENSE PLATES -

According to long time friend Paul Vilser who did the drawings, layout and production artwork, they were able to do this for 12 years from 1996 to 2007. Legally they were good for about two months but some owners kept them on for a full year. They can still be found on some Illinois cars at the National GS Nationals many years later. It was a clever idea for Illinois to offer this to I assume any Club that wanted to do it. Some of Paul's art work for these Illinois license plates were used on T shirts and also sold at the GS Nationals.

Paul has no idea how many they made each year. Like many artists in each case somewhere hidden in the drawings he put his name or his initials. Bob Held as the art director for Hurst would do this back in the day.

Paul contacted me a few weeks back as he came across some of these original license plates from the various years. We have pictured 4 of them inthe next photo. These can be found in the Rare Parts section for sale. These are quite unique as I don’t believe any of the other 49 states have ever done a similar format.

PHOTO 3 - The top left photo shows the 1998 Illinois license plate. One of the early ones. The top right photo shows the 1999 Illinois license plate. The bottom left photo shows the 2000 Illinois license plate. Notice this one doesn't show any cars just the logos. The bottom right photo shows the 2001 Illinois license plate.

LOCAL MOPAR CLUB CAR SHOW -

Earlier last week I learned of a local Mopar Club car show that two Mopar clubs were putting on this past Sunday at a nearby Dodge Dealership. I went expecting to see maybe 30 cars and was amazed at the huge turn out. There must have been over 150 Mopars at the event. Several very rare examples including SuperBird. Probably at least a dozen Hellcat models.

I was very impressed with the high number of restored Mopars. Several early Hemi powered cars including my favorite, a 1967 Hemi GTX. I ran into 2 people from my old days. One person worked at the Sunoco when he was a kid in the 1970s where I had all my work done and would sometimes strip GTOs at. He remembered me taking him for a ride in the 1967 GTO Hemi I had back then. He even remembered that I sold it to someone in Washington state. The other person I ran into recalls buying a GTO tri-power from me for a mere $350 when we lived on Sugarbottom Road. He remembers our 1964 GTO and the 1967 ram air firebird we had.

Looking back now it was a smart move that Chrysler/Dodge did a deal for the Warner Brothers cartoon figures. The purple horn with the special “beep beep” sound is a mark of genius in my opinion. The clock and tach all in one another clever idea. The shaker style and air grabber hood are more examples of a clever design that they developed back then. .

Among the rare Mopars at this show was a 1961 Valiant. A new teenage driver today would be hard pressed to locate how to move the shifter from Park to Drive. We had one many years ago. Push button drive located to the left of the steering column on the dash. I remember one of my first part time jobs as a 16 year old was pumping gas at a local gas station. The owner had a Valiant powered by a Chevy V8, a real sleeper.

Seeing so many Hurst pistol grip shifters it made me recall when Hurst sold out to Mr Gasket and I had a chance to buy a lot of those style parts back in the day. One of many mistakes I have made over the years.

PHOTO 4 - The top left photo shows a rare early Formula S Barracuda. This car was a restored original owner car. Low optioned manual shift radio delete car. The top right shows one of the ultra rare Dodge Daytona models. The Holy Grail among Mopar collectors of muscle cars from that time frame. The bottom left photo shows a very unusual color late model Challenger. I can’t recall ever seeing one this color. The bottom right photo shows the massive Hemi engine in my favorite, a 1967 GTX, This car had a blue exterior with a blue interior. Automatic on the column! I bought and sold 4 of the 1967 GTXs back in the day. Only one was a Hemi.

AFTERMARKET ALARMS -

In last week’s Inner Circle we mentioned we would cover a funny story about an alarm that was in one of the Turbo Regals we bought and sold. When I was buying and selling over 30 or more a year in the early and mid 1990s many of my purchases had aftermarket alarm systems in them. I would always remove them to avoid issues for the next owner. In many cases they were crudely installed. Some had several holes in the inner fender for the siren. This is in addition to a hoel drilled in the dash pad or dash for a red alarm light. Most of the wiring was never done properly. One Grand National I sold went to a customer out of Maryland. He bought a Grand National from me. At the time I had a few of them. Few days later he called me. He was very upset. He then tells me the car simply shut off and would not start. His mechanic has tried with no success over two days to locate the problem with no luck.

At first I was dumbfounded as my mechanical skills are very minimal at best. I said explain to me exactly what happened? He said he was pulling into an apartment complex and the car simply shut off. This gave me a clue. I said did you by any chance hit one of those speed bumps? The answer was yes. It then dawned on me what I thought the issue could be.

It dawned on me this car had a weird alarm in it that I left in the car. In the center console was some sort of metal bolt if I recall and if you moved it the car would never start. I never removed it because it was unique and I did not want to pull up the console and trace how it was wired.

Sure enough that is what happened. I am going by memory from over 20 plus years ago, but that is basically what happened.

THE ANSWER TO WHY THE BRAKE PEDALS ARE ONLY PAINTED A PORTION -

If you recall last week we showed photos of an original Turbo Regal brake pedal. It was painted about ⅔ of the pedal and the last ⅓ was bare metal. All the vacuum brake pedals I buy I always paint the entire pedal. I heard from reader John Kostelac. Around the time 1990 John was in the GM ASEP program as a tech. He got preferential treatment through several plants that made parts for GM. According to John a human would dip the pedal in a bucket. He actually watched this happen. This was often done one in each hand at the same time! He also says the control arms were done this way as well! So now you know the answer! Sounds like a job I could have done!

BARE METAL DRIVE SHAFTS -

Larry Ledford out of California who bought a 33,500 mile Grand National from me way back in 2004 for the huge sum of $14,500, emailed me saying when he had the u-joints replaced with Spicer cross u-joints the guy put the driveshaft on a lathe and removed all the surface rust with sandpaper and painted it! That kind of extra service means a lot to any customer even if they charge for it!

HAINES IS MAKING MASKS -

The Haines company well known for making underwear, now adds face masks to their product line. I got the perfect tagline for them. “We now cover the openings at BOTH ENDS”. Many successful companies big and small have a tagline that sticks in your memory. The one we are credited with making up related to the Turbo Regals is “T-TYPE A BOOST OF BUICK PERFORMANCE.” If any of my readers work for Haines, run that tagline by them! They can mail me a check! The ASC tag line for the GNX was “A High-Performance Investment For The Fortunate 500.” Not a misprint as it was never corrected when the GNX production actually was 547 as my readers are well aware of. Originally the plan was for 200 GNXs.

LIST OF MECHANICS FOR THE TURBO REGAL -

Here is the first listing of repair shops that we and other Turbo owners recommend. Some of the below names you probably recognize as they have catered specifically to these cars for many years. Also, many of them are long time customers of ours. We also got a good response from our readers and I have listed the shops they deal with as well. CASTLE PERFORMANCE OPEN HOUSE -

Click on this link below for more information

http://manmarketing.com/email/images/castle/66094-CSAR/index.html

I sent Paul the other week 2 different M&M contests with a prize for the winner. In case of tie I think he said that the second person would get to make the next 12 monthly mortgage payments on his building.

With Castle Performance having a 4 day event I told him having done many Reunion and Open House events it's critical to keep participants engaged over the 4 day period. Here are some of the ideas I sent him.

Be interesting to see if Paul Castle does any of the unique contests I suggested in last week’s Inner Circle. Some of them are quite easy to do such as seeing which Turbo Regal leaves the smallest oil stain or largest. I suspect they will get a huge turnout since so many other car show events have been cancelled.

GOOD NEWS - WE ARE ACCEPTING CLASSIFIED ADS -

Good news - We now accept Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.

Here are the options and the costs.

Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need to be specifically Turbo Regal related. It can be for something for sale or something wanted.

Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.

The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.

It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.

We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.

Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,400 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,200 potential buyers.

Ads submitted properly by the previous Sunday would appear that next Wednesday in the weekly Inner Circle. Ads must be submitted by email to - [email protected]

Payment by credit card must be done by phone to our office 215-766-1611.

NOTE - IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO SEE THE BUICK RARE PARTS SECTION -

You must subscribe to see the Rare Parts section each week. It would go directly to your inbox every Wednesday afternoon. It is FREE, probably one reason why nobody complains about what I write about. To subscribe simply email – [email protected] - to get our free weekly Inner Circle email.

The Buick Rare Parts section is only viewed by those that subscribe. Subscription is free, so complaints on what I write are nonexistent!

NEW PRODUCTS FROM US –

1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
SCANMASTER STEERING COLUMN BRACKET

Here is a simple way to mount the Scanmaster, part #6783, so it is in your direct sight.

The bracket attaches by velcro, which comes with it.

We used to sell a similar steering column bracket years ago until our source stopped making them.

We now have a new supplier who makes it in a high-quality acrylic plastic. It is then painted in the Turbo Regal grey, so it will match most Turbo Regal steering columns.

An excellent way to mount a Scanmaster.

7915 - 1984-1987 Buick Turbo Regal - Scanmaster Steering Column Bracket - $34.95

CLICK HERE - For the link to the bracket on our website.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
REPRODUCTION VACUUM BRAKE PEDAL

We now offer this reproduction vacuum brake pedal. The difference between the vacuum brake pedal and a Turbo Regal pedal is the location of the pin that the rod goes to that comes through the firewall. The vacuum brake pedal makes the installation easier. Without the vacuum brake pedal, you would need to weld a new pin in a different location on the original Turbo Regal brake pedal.

Finding a good used vacuum brake pedal has become more difficult as time passes. Because many Turbo Regal owners are converting to vacuum brakes, the demand has been heavy.

This reproduction pedal has solved that issue of using a 30-plus-year-old rusted vacuum brake pedal.

NOTE - You need to re-use the original bolt and bushings to secure the pedal to the bracket under the dash. The pedal is bare metal and will require painting.

7916 - 1986-1987 Buick Regal - Reproduction Vacuum Brake Pedal - $99.95

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
STAINLESS STEEL TRANSMISSION COOLING LINE KIT - 4 Pieces

Over time, the original lines can rust or leak.

These lines are stainless steel and made by the same company where we buy our brake and fuel line kits. The quality is excellent.

If you ever had the transmission rebuilt, you know what it’s like to rebend old transmission lines to make them fit.

Kit consists of the 4 lines as pictured.

These are manufactured in the USA using the best materials.

An excellent replacement for the transmission cooling lines.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
DUAL FAN INSTALLATION BRACKET

The same source that makes our translator bracket has made this one-piece aluminum 1/8" gauge aluminum bracket for us.

It is compatible with #7607 Dual Fan Conversion Kit and Custom-made Plug-and-Play Harness and #7608 Dual Fan Only we sell.

This bracket requires no holes to be drilled in the core support or the dual fan kit.

The end result is the dual fan setup will sit flush against the radiator. The bracket secures the dual fan at the bottom of the core support. It is barely visible.

Each bracket comes with detailed directions. You do have to trim all 4 mounting tabs on the dual fan unit.

NOTE - You may also be interested in these related parts - #7607 Dual Fan Conversion Kit and Custom-made Plug-and-Play Harness, #7608 Dual Fan Only, and #7609 Custom-made Plug-and-Play Harness Only (for Intrepid Dual Fan).

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be used if you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me directly - [email protected] - and I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING - We appreciate all the nice emails we get about our popular weekly Inner Circle. With the 2020 car show season coming to and end let's hope 2021 things return to “normal”.
