09-27-2017 Inner Circle

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 09-27-2017 -

MINI-CONTEST -

This mini-contest is open to all customers, except those that are in the Turbo Regal business. We will accept only one guess per person. Your single guess must be emailed directly to me [email protected]

The winner will be announced in next week’s Inner Circle and will be awarded the actual part, as well as a flip-down-stay down license plate bracket and one of our Ten Top Reason I Own a Buick Grand National T-shirt in the size you specify. The T-shirt part numbers on our website are #7671-#7673. Total value of the prize is approximately $50.

CLUES - The part was used in previous cars and in the 1960s muscle cars. This part was made partially in glass. The same part is in all the Turbo Regal cars, but the material now is partially made in plastic, not glass.

Name the exact part that I am referring to. Several answers may be correct, but you need to specify the answer that matches my answer.

Email your single guess to - [email protected]

It is best to submit your answer in the first 48 hours of reading this Inner Circle as usually we get a winner fairly quickly. The first correct answer I receive by email wins the contest.

GOOD NEWS - WE WILL BE ACCEPTING CLASSIFIED ADS -

Good news - We will now be accepting Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.

Here are the options and the costs.

Ads can be from any individual or company. It needs to be automotive related, meaning it does not need be specifically Turbo Regal related.

Maximum number of words is 125 words, which is about 7 to 9 lines of copy. No photos. You can list a website. We recommend you state your name, phone number or email, a price, and your location in your ad.

The cost for 2 consecutive weeks is $25. The cost for 4 consecutive weeks is $40. You save $10 with the 4-week plan. No changes can be made to your existing running ad. You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run – 2 or 4 weeks.

It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.

We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.

Our weekly Inner Circle reaches over 3,200 members every Wednesday direct to their inbox. The Inner Circle also appears every Wednesday on our website with the related photos. Your ad would be visible to both groups of readers. So, the exposure to your ad is well over 3,200 potential buyers.

My Rare Parts section is only viewed by those that subscribe. Subscription is free, so complaints on what I write are nonexistent!

Ads submitted properly by the previous Sunday would appear that next Wednesday in the weekly Inner Circle. Ads must be submitted by email to [email protected] Payment by credit card must be done by phone to our office 215-766-1611 x 0.

TWO EXTREMELY RARE JUNKYARD FINDS -

I found two extremely rare Buick items over the last 2 weekends in two different junkyards.

The first item I found last Friday in a junkyard near Cecil County, Maryland. I had never found one of these before. That part is out of a 1995 Buick Riviera. The Riviera had the optional Delco CD player that was separate from the am/fm radio with cassette player. In other words, this 1995 Riviera had both the cassette option in the main unit and the separate CD option.

This past Saturday at a junkyard near me I came across a 1985 Regal Limited. It was fairly intact. This car was equipped with one of the very rare options the engine block heater. The SPID code for this option is KO5. In 1985 it was just $18 and the price remained unchanged through the 1987 model.

PHOTO 1 - The photo to the left shows the rare Delco CD player. The Delco CD player measures 2 inches tall by 7 inches wide by 7 inches long. The photo to the right shows the unused factory engine block heater. This was tied to a hole in the radiator core support. The 3-prong plug end has a rubber cover over it. I had to cut the 3-wire lead for the engine block heater, since I lacked the tools to remove it intact, and did not feel like crawling under the car in 85 degree heat! It has about 8 feet of wire on it. See the Rare Parts section as both these parts are for sale.

PHOTO 2 - This same 1985 Regal had the Olympics decal on the passenger quarter glass window, as seen in the photo on the left. A common sight on many of the 1985 Regals can be seen on the inside trunk lid. It’s a small round yellow decal that refers to the trunk lid fitment inspection. It measures about approximately 2 inches in diameter and says, “DECK LID FIT BY” with a circle for a signature. This does not appear on every 1985 Regal, from what I can determine. This can be seen in the photo to the right.

ON THE ROAD WITH PETE SERIO -

When we started the Turbo Regal business, Pete Serio, the original “Window Rattle Guy,” accompanied me on several road trips. He drove some of the Turbo Regals that I bought back to my house. As many old timers remember, I quickly discovered his real skill related to Turbo Regals was making window adjustments. This became known as the “Dollar Bill Test.”

After his adjustments, Pete would take a dollar from the car owner and, with the window in the up position, the dollar bill would remain snug all around the glass surface and the weatherstrip. This is a skill that has now been passed down to Pete Hoffman.

Pete Serio acquired these skills back when he originally worked at a GM dealership in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. He would get all the quirky jobs that the regular mechanics could not fix, such as rattles and window leaks. While it’s true that water runs downhill, it was Pete’s job to locate where the water was entering the car and eliminate that issue for the customers. As Turbo Regal owners quickly found out, this is not a skill that many repair shops are qualified to fix.

We sell a Window Rattle kit that Pete Serio originally put together for us. It is part #7170. We also sell his very detailed book entitled, “How to Eliminate Window Rattles and Wind Noise,” part #6639. This book shows you step-by-step how to make the adjustments of your windows.

We also sell brand new power window motors, part #6649.

These items are very popular sellers for us and we also sell them to other G-Body suppliers, including the Monte Carlo market.

Pete would also do power antenna installs which like window adjustments, required a special amount of patience to avoid damaging the passenger fender. I think power antennas fail almost as frequently as powermasters. That is one option I am glad my car lacks!

I thought I would share some photos from long ago that I have of Pete doing some of the repairs at various events and some of our road trips.

PHOTO 3 - The top left photo shows Pete working on a T-Top at one of the Buick events he attended with me. The top right photo shows Pete standing in a storage garage as the owner pulls out a Grand National body shell that I loaded on to my trailer during a snow storm. The bottom left photo shows Pete making adjustments to a customer’s Turbo-T. The bottom right shows Pete and me looking over the remains of a Grand National in a field of weeds.

PETE SERIO - BMW FACTORY - TURBO REGAL PURCHASE -

Back when I was buying Turbo Regals in the summer of 2001 or 2002, I had a call from a customer of mine that wanted to see if I wanted to buy his original 1986 T-Type hardtop. It was a black T-Type with a tan interior. He lived in Georgia and I believe he was the original owner.

He explained to me that he was going to be going on vacation in a few weeks to a location north of his home state of Georgia. Once he told me the date, I discovered that the BMW club was holding their national convention at the BMW plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

I checked with the seller to see if he would be willing to meet me somewhere in South Carolina near the BMW plant. He agreed to meet me in the parking lot of the BMW plant. I contacted Pete Serio and said would he like to go to the BMW National Convention and would drive home a Turbo Regal for me. Naturally, Pete agreed to drive out from Columbus, Ohio for another fun road trip.

The date was set and the deal was completed in the parking lot of the BMW plant. Probably the only time a deal like this was done at the grounds of the BMW plant. The seller was driving a new S4 twin turbo Audi and insisted I take it for a spin. I was impressed with the new S4. A few years later I would buy a used S4!

The BMW plant is a perfect location for a national event. The weather was picture perfect and Pete and I had a great time looking at the various BMW show cars. I had driven down with my 1995 M3.

The story gets better. We get the 1986 T-Type home. The owner had warned me that the car always had an annoying stumble since it was new, and that no one could fix.

My mechanic was able to locate the problem. Simply put, the cam sensor was set 1-2 teeth off! A simple adjustment and the car ran 100%. I got a local buyer for the car. This buyer worked for a garage in Philadelphia. During his lunch hour one day he was reading my book on Turbo Regals. His boss happened to walk by and noticed the name Kirban on the cover of the book.

It turns out his boss was in the process of buying my parents’ home in Huntingdon Valley. This was the home where I, along with my 3 sisters and brother, grew up! What a coincidence! This is a true story.

PHOTO 4 - The photo to the left shows Pete standing alongside one of BMWs smallest cars. As you can see, Pete towers over it! The photo to the right shows Pete alongside one of those million dollar BMW 507s. They only made these cars for 3 years, 1957-1959. Elvis Presley had one when he was in stationed in Germany in the service. My neighbor growing up had one and lent it to me on several occasions to go on dates! To a BMW owner, the 507 model is the Holy Grail. It is like the GNX is to our immediate world, only a few bucks more! Prices generally start at a million dollars and up. The 507 has an aluminum body and is V8 powered. I am sure most of my readers would gladly make room in their garage for one of those cars!

ANOTHER NEW PRODUCT FROM US -

After suggesting this product with Pypes Exhaust Systems, they have just introduced a stock length test pipe with dump pipe, complete with a block off plate that you can remove for racing, our part #7809. This is a stock length replacement with the stock diameter of 2-½ inches wide. See New Products for the link to our website.

Here is the link to this dump pipe on our website.

RIP DAVID HUINKER “TURBO DAVE” -

Our Buick Turbo community has lost one of the long-time voices known on the Turbo Regal forum as “Turbo Dave.” He passed away last week. Our prayers go out to his family.

PRAYING FOR THE PEOPLE OF PUERTO RICO -

The people of Puerto Rico have just suffered through the most violent hurricane that island has seen in almost 100 years. The entire island is without power, and according to one of our long-time customers Miquel, only about 3 cell towers are still standing. He called our office last Friday by standing in the middle of a street to get a signal with his cell phone.

Because it’s an island, it means all supplies must get air lifted in once the runways have been cleared or by ship, making it a monumental task.

This task becomes even more difficult since this event has come on the heels of two other hurricanes on the U.S. mainland. Most of us can’t grasp what it means to be without the necessities we take for granted, like food, water, fuel, and electric.

I HAVE BEEN ACCUSED -

I have been accused by several vendors of selling that new GM 1986-1987 Mass Air Flow Sensor last week way too cheap. By the way, it did sell in the first 30 minutes last Wednesday afternoon. While it may be true that I could have sold it for more, I rather be known for selling something too cheap than selling something for an outrageous amount of money.

For example, at the same time on ebay I spotted a GM brand new mass air hose in the wrapper for $350. While someone may step up and pay that hefty price, there are many other options to avoid buying a $350 mass air hose that probably was about $40 back in 1987.

Since I have been in the business a very long time, I work on the theory I will always turn up more parts. I also feel we have a good relationship with our customer base and buyers will be more likely to purchase other items from us if they’re treated fairly.

One customer sent me an email showing a dealer in California that has a 1987 Grand National with T-Tops with less than 400 actual miles on it for the steep price of $99,999. I guess that sounds better than asking $100,000.

Everyone in business is entitled to make a profit and when I buy something, it is usually understood by the seller that I am buying it for resale. With a $99,999 price tag, there is little doubt this dealer will make an enormous profit should someone step up and buy it. Or at the very least he has allowed himself some wiggle room! This is strictly my opinion and I am fairly certain most of my readers would be in agreement.

I know if I listed a 400-mile original Grand National for that kind of money, the amount of angry emails I get would be enormous! I also would grow very old before the Grand National would sell at that price.

ON A SIMILAR NOTE -

I do know of one Grand National that would easily fetch over 100 grand. I will do an article on that particular Grand National next week! I just talked to the owner who still has this particular Grand National.

WHAT MILES QUALIFY AS LOW MILES? -

What miles qualify as low miles on what is now a 30-plus-year old muscle car from the 1980s?

If the rule of thumb is approximately 10,000 miles per year, what range would be acceptable low miles for a Turbo Regal? Also, what range would be extremely low miles where you would basically have a museum piece to simply showcase?

Everyone has their own idea as to what range of miles they look for in a car to buy. No doubt that is one aspect to consider. But it is not the only aspect to consider. There is little doubt that the lower the actual miles, the higher the price tag.

ORIGINAL 1987 GRAND NATIONAL HARDTOP FOR SALE -

This is a 1987 Grand National hardtop with just 48,000 actual miles for sale. It is a low-optioned, 2-owner, non-smoked in, southern car with 100% original paint. The key features are original paint, which eliminates any possible surprises on the body. This is a hardtop with a mint interior, with the bonus being low miles for a 30-year-old car. Last, but not least, the car is 100% stock with the exception of the exhaust having a test pipe. The rest of the exhaust system is still original.

The original owner lived in South Carolina and now the current owner lives in Georgia. He has owned the Grand National since 1999. It’s straight car that has not been modified. He even has the original Window Sticker. Car even has crank windows! Being a southern car, it lacks all the rust issues northern cars usually have. The Grand National has not been out in the elements and has been stored under a car port.

The interior is mint and the headliner has been replaced, which is common for these cars. The car has a non-working power antenna. The owner wants to sell it because he hardly gets to use it anymore. We now have photos and a copy of the actual Window Sticker for any of those that may be interested in this original 1987 Grand National hardtop.

This car is priced to sell at $16,900. For more info and photos, email me direct - [email protected]

MORE GOOD NEWS -

As I write this, we have a few original AC Delco power antennas currently getting rebuilt with the upgraded steel cable insert. You must contact our office 215-766-1611 x 0 and get on the short list if you want one. This is for part #7703 for $179.95.

It is very difficult for me to find suitable original power antennas to have rebuilt.

Here is a link to the power antenna options on our website.

A DISTURBING STATISTIC -

I just read a disturbing statistic. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs report from 2012, 22 veterans commit suicide EACH day!

GOOD NEWS - AVAILABLE NOW - GNX 16 BY 8 WHEELS -

Our supplier has gotten in another shipment of the popular GNX wheels we sell, our part #7219. These are now available. These wheels have the proper offset to sit properly under the front fenders and rear quarter panels. Our supplier was out of them for the last 6 weeks.

Here is the link to these wheels on our website.

REAL SET OF BRAND NEW, NEVER USED, GNX WHEELS FOR SALE -

I was recently contacted by a customer of ours that has a brand new set of the real GNX wheels, complete with the centers, for sale. These are not reproductions. They have never been used and have the correct offset for a real GNX so wheels sit correctly under the fender flares. The price is $3,495 for the set of 4, plus shipping (which would run $150 to $175 depending on your location.) For more information, and photos email me direct - [email protected]

1987 GRAND NATIONAL FOR SALE -

I am representing this 1987 Grand National hardtop for sale for the owner who resides in Florida. This car is at the top of the value chain and is, without any doubt, one of the best. It has been in the same family since it was new. The original owner bought it when he was single. Soon after, with a growing family, it became evident the Grand National was not a practical car, so he sold it to his brother who I have known for probably 20 years. His brother recently passed away and that is why the car is back down in Florida.

It has been made better than new. When I say better than new, it is mainly due to the fact it has had a very high-dollar repaint applied and everything has been freshened up.

I knew the brother that passed away quite well, since he was heavily involved with GTOs and even wrote a very detailed book on GTOs that is still sold today. He also had a GTO and was a very meticulous individual. His name was Eric White. The book he wrote years ago was titled, “GTOAA of America Pontiac GTO, GT-37 Illustrated Identification Guide.”

I will give a copy of Eric’s GTO identification book to whoever buys this pristine Grand National. Eric was very well known in the GTO world at the national level. I would see him every year at the National events during the 1990s. As a matter of fact, we discussed his new book and what he needed it to say since he was using GM logos, etc.

The Grand National is now in his brother’s hand, Kirk White, in Florida. They have every single document with this car since it was new. Plus, they even have the original Window Sticker. They also have every single repair receipt. Over $12,000 was spent on the repaint and to freshening up this car.

It still smells new! A smell that no company as of yet has ever duplicated. If they did, Corvette owners would line up to buy it!

The Grand National has almost every single option. The actual mileage is less than 23,000 original miles. The car is 99% stock with the one exception being an aftermarket alarm system.

It has the stock powermaster brake system with the upgraded Cardone brake bowl. The car has used seat covers, which have protected the original seats. According to Kirk, he doesn’t believe anyone has ever sat in the back seat of this car.

This is a Kirban-quality car based in my numerous emails with Kirk and the fact I knew his brother from our mutual GTO connection for many years.

The new lowered price is $29,900. Keep in mind, receipts come with the car and the repaint totaled over $12,000. The repaint was only done because the car had such a poor paint job from the factory as many of them did.

FALL TV SEASON -

The fall TV season starts this week. One show that began last year has my wife and I hooked. It is unlike any TV show I have seen. The writing is smart and the story line is terrific. It uses humor and covers the ups and downs of an extended family. It was one of the most watched series last year, which probably explains why it also has the most commercials shown during the 60-minute time span.

Before you get hooked on season 2, be sure to catch last year’s episodes, otherwise it will be impossible to follow this season’s episodes. It started yesterday, Tuesday nights entitled, THIS IS US.

NOTE - IF YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO SEE THE RARE PARTS SECTION -

If you are not able to see the Rare Parts section at the end of this Inner Circle, it is because you are not an Inner Circle member, but instead are reading this on the website. You must subscribe to see the Rare Parts section each week. It would go directly to your inbox every Wednesday afternoon. It is FREE, probably one reason why nobody complains about what I write about.

Simply email - [email protected] - to get on our weekly Inner Circle email.

URGENT NEED FOR CORRECT STEERING WHEEL CORES -

We have an urgent need for correct 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel cores that are not bent. They can have minor rust on the spokes but cannot be pitted. If you owe us a steering wheel core, please send it in to get your core deposit back.

In order for us to continue this service, we have had to raise the core price. Without cores, owners can’t get a redone leather-wrapped steering wheel. Help us continue this needed service. We now issue a Letter of Credit for $100, if you have a correct 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel core.

EMAILS TO KIRBAN PERFORMANCE -

NOTE- If you email us and do NOT get a timely reply, be sure to check your “SPAM” folder. Some emails do not go thru.

If you need to email us, use - [email protected]

TIP FROM KIRBAN -

Some of the best undetectable upgrades you can make is to replace the analog dash light bulbs with our LED kit. The end result is amazing.

The same holds true with our plug-and-play headlights, which still retain the glass headlight bulbs and allows you to use the H3 bulbs, which are included in the kit. Nighttime driving is greatly enhanced with this simple-to-install upgrade that has no downside to it! The complete headlight upgrade kit is part #7530. The analog LED dash light kit is part #7234.

These are two subtle improvements that do not hurt the value of an original Turbo Regal, in my opinion.

TIPS AND IDEAS YOU HAVE TRIED -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.
