HARDTOP SUN VISOR BRACKETS AND HARDWARE -

GM used several formats of sun visor brackets during the 1980s and 1990s. The style used on the 1978-1987 G-body cars all had a small set screw to tighten up each visor. The brackets were all die cast chrome.

GM used a similar style after that, which did not use a small set screw. The front edge was straighter than the other two mounting points in the version GM used in our cars. Both brackets were the same for the left or right.

T-Top cars used a slightly different bracket. If the passenger’s side sun visor had a lighted mirror, in most cases GM used a longer rod in the sun visor to help support the additional weight of the mirror. This longer rod used a different style plastic bushing and has a hole in the bracket for the wire to pass through.

Having a droopy sun visor can be annoying. Over the years the chrome can pit. The quick, cheap fix for a droopy sun visor would be to put a small piece of Velcro on the sun visor and the headliner and, presto, the problem is solved!

Two things can cause a sun visor bracket to fail. The plastic bushing on the rod may be broken or missing. The rod may no longer be tight on the bracket. That rod should not spin on the bracket. It should swivel, but not spin.

Fortunately, today all the various parts are available, even the special set screw, which has a shoulder on it. Various suppliers have redone visors available, and also new brackets and bushings. We may look into offering some of these parts in the near future. However, right now I have a good supply of good used brackets, which we have listed in the Rare Parts section of this Inner Circle.

Each one includes the diecast chrome bracket (in near mint condition,) a used plastic bushing, the correct set screw and even the 3 original screws that secure the bracket to the roof. All these parts are used. We offer used brackets, bushing and set screws for a fraction of the cost of the new reproduction parts.

PHOTO 2 - We show both versions of the sun visor brackets. The top bracket with the shorter rod is for a regular sun visor. The lower bracket with the longer rod is for the lighted mirror visor. Not only is that rod longer, but even the plastic bushing is different. This bracket has the hole in it for the wire for the lighted mirror. The photo shows both sun visor brackets with the plastic bushing already on the visor rod, the set screw, and the 3 original screws that secure the sun visor bracket to the roof.

MORE FROM MY ARCHIVES -

Last week we showed the brochure entitled, “High Technology from Buick” from the1986 and 1987 Buick Press Kits, which highlighted the intercooled turbo engine. I was able to find the same Buick brochure for the 1984 Turbo Regal. Unfortunately, I can’t find one for the 1985 models. The 1984 High Technology from Buick brochure is a tri-fold 6-page format, not a 4-page format like the 1986 and 1987 version.

PHOTO 3 - Shows the 1984 High Technology from Buick brochure. On one page they show a chart comparing the features of the new 1984 Turbo Regal against 7 other turbo car models. What is strange is they are comparing the new 1984 Turbo engine in the Regal to only 1983 turbo car models. They include the 1983 Renault Fuego and the 1983 Mitsubishi Starion.

The year 1984 marked the second year that Buick used the T-Type model designation. The year 1983 was the first year for the T-Type designation. They used that designation on 5 different Buick models in 1983, one of which was on the Regal.

POWERMASTER BRAKE UNIT -

Every week we get cores in from our customers, either from when they buy a rebuilt unit or if they want to cash one in for a Letter of Credit. With the 1985-1987 Turbo Regals that had the powermaster brake unit approaching 30-plus years old, it is extremely rare to get in a core that still has the original all-black brake bowl and a black brake switch on it.

Last week we received such a core! It was 100% original. Its appearance was still very nice for being 30 years old. I can’t recall the last time we got in a core with the black brake switch. As many of you know, the black brake switch was replaced by Buick in one of their early recalls.

PHOTO 4 - Here are 4 photos of the original powermaster brake unit. Note the black brake switch and the all black brake bowl. The motor still has the original finish on it.

SUPER SALESMAN -

Somebody was a super salesman. The other day I spotted a fairly new small car that had 4 regular steel black wheels on it. The wheels were a 4-lug bolt pattern; maybe a 13-inch tire, and each wheel had a lock as one of the lug nuts! Who would steal a 13 inch steel wheel?

ONE OF THE GREAT AUTOMOBILE MYSTERIES -

One of the great automotive mysteries is probably James Dean’s Porsche 550 Spyder. If you know the story, you know he was killed in a car crash in California.

At the time, he became a real cultural icon with such films as “Rebel Without a Cause,” “East of Eden,” and “Giant.”

His early untimely death in a dramatic car accident helped to ensure his status as a legend. It was also the beginning of another famous urban legend. His Porsche had been customized by George Barris, who recently died. The accident was almost head on between Dean’s Porsche and a Ford. Dean’s mechanic, who was riding with him, would survive only to die in a road accident in Germany in 1981.

The Porsche would be later known as the “cursed” car. George Barris bought the wreck for $2,500. On delivery it slipped off its trailer and broke both legs of a mechanic. A doctor bought the engine, putting it in his own Porsche. The first time out, the vehicle spun out of control and crashed into a tree, killing the doctor instantly. Another physician bought the transmission, and then went racing with his car. and going into a curve the car rolled over seriously injuring him. George Barris sold two of the tires, which were not damaged in the accident, and both tires blew up simultaneously causing the car to go off the road. Two young thieves were injured while attempting to steal parts off the James Dean Porsche.

By this time Barris decide to store the car, but bad luck kept coming in 1959 a fire broke out in the Fresno garage where the James Dean Porsche was stored. At this point the California Highway Patrol thought to transport the mangled vehicle to local high schools and show teenagers the dangers of high speed driving. At one such exhibit the car fell off the display and broke the hip of a teenager. On a trip to Salinas, the flatbed truck carrying the Spyder lost control and the driver was crushed by the Porsche.

The car ended up going on tour to other states. At another exhibit, on the day of the anniversary of James Dean’s death, a fifteen-year-old boy was standing about fifteen feet away from the exhibit. Three bolts snapped that held the car and the car plowed forward crushing the boy’s legs.

In 1960 Barris decided to have the car shipped back home to California from Florida. It was shipped in a train boxcar and the door was carefully sealed. When the train arrived in Los Angeles, the seal on the boxcar door was still intact, yet the Porsche had disappeared. The car has not been seen since!

Now that George Barris has passed away, there has been a renewed interest into locating the James Dean Porsche 550 Spyder. It could be one of the most valuable wrecked cars in existence. In my travels, I have been to James Dean’s hometown and also stopped at that famous intersection in California where he lost his life.

Maybe after this mystery can be solved, they can find Amelia Earhart’s plane!

TURBO REGAL POWER ANTENNAS UPDATE -

We had our son Darrell make up a sample bracket and template so these new power antennas will bolt into the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals, like the originals.

He installed one in a Grand National that he had painted, and it used this new bracket.

These new power antennas have a manufacturer’s One-year Warranty.

Antennas are actually made for another GM car. They use the same screw-in bezel that sits on the top of the fender, so you can use the original bezel. The 3-wire lead and plug is identical to the original. The new bracket will be bolted to the new antenna. A rubber boot will also come with this new power antenna to protect the motor from the elements.

We expect to have these new power antennas ready to ship before the end of November. If you place your order in advance now, the sale price is $179.95 plus $12 shipping. The retail price once they are available will be $199.95 plus shipping. We would not charge your credit card until we are able to ship the power antenna to you.

This power antenna is not on our website, so you have to call and talk to Christina to get on the list if you want one - 215-766-1611 x 0. By ordering now you save $20. This also gives us a good idea on how many power antennas we need to have initially.

GNX REPRODUCTION WHEELS -

I have a pair (2) of the GNX-style wheels we sell on our website. This pair (2) had tires mounted on them but were never used on the road. They are exactly as new. The buyer thought he could go with bigger tires using this offset on his car. You can own this pair (2) for $379 and $25 UPS shipping to the basic 48 states. Contact our office to purchase them - 215-766-1611 x 0. NEW LOWER PRICE.

Currently we are overstocked with our fiberglass front and rear bumpers. Part #1507 is the front bumper and #1532 is the rear bumper. The retail is normally $190 each. However, if you purchase both the front and rear at the same time, your cost would be $365. You would save $15 by purchasing both. These are for off road use only.

CORES NEEDED -

Here is the information on our credits for cores.

We currently need original good 1986-1987 AC Delco mass air flow sensors. We allow $25 credit for each core that can be rebuilt. Credit will not be issued until we get your unit back from Cardone showing it was able to be rebuilt. Recent cores have shown that some of them are simply not able to be rebuilt any more.

TURBO CORES must be the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal stock ones. They must be complete. We will issue you a $100 Letter of Credit for each acceptable core.

If you ship to us, the post office is the cheapest method. Pack the item(s) with a note with your name, address and phone number

Over a period of time, the original manifold air temperature sensor may fail to read accurately, due to age or dirt.

This manifold air temperature sensor gives the computer a reading of the air temperature as it enters the turbocharger. The sensor is capable of reading between -40 and 266F. This is the sensor that mounts in the factory elbow off the air cleaner assembly.

These are the hoses that connect the vacuum lines to the vacuum block.

If you are buying either of our reproduction new billet vacuum blocks, it’s best to replace the 5 rubber hoses, since the originals may be cracked. Hoses may also split when you attempt to remove them.

Because the material is inexpensive, we only offer a set of 2 complete sets (10 hoses), so you will have a spare set.

1986-1987 Buick Turbo Regal -
OEM BEARING for the Stock Belt Tensioner Pulley

We discovered that most of the aftermarket belt tensioner pulleys from the various suppliers do not match up to the original design.

The simple solution was to find the manufacturer of the actual bearing that GM used. We carry that exact bearing, made by the same manufacturer.

It is a double-sealed ball bearing.

You need to get it pressed in by someone that has a bench press. It does not require much effort to press in the new bearing.

Our photo shows an original on the lower left, this new replacement bearing on the lower right and a stock belt tensioner pulley at the top.

NOTE - You may also be interested in these related parts - #7115 Air Conditioning Bypass Pulley and #6609 Serpentine Belt.

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be use you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these have to be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]
