Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 04-14-2021 -

FRONT AND REAR COIL SPRINGS -

We now have these available from our supplier. The rears are in limited supply as these are brand new factory GM rear springs. The fronts are a reproduction of the heavy duty ones specifically for the Turbo Regal models 1984-1987. Keep in mind the 1987 Turbo Regals did sit slightly higher in the front than the 1987 models. The ones we have for sale duplicate the 1987 format so the car sits more level.

With any new spring front or rear it will take awhile for them to seat properly at the normal height.

PHOTO 1 - We show both the front and rear springs. The fronts are #7943 with a price of $169.95 plus shipping. The rears are #7942 with a price of $119.95 plus shipping.

DENNIS KIRBAN’S VOL. 1 & 2 TIPS & TRIVIA & SOURCES FOR 1986-1987 TURBO REGALS

First published by us in 2005. These were a follow up to the 2nd book we wrote which has been out of print for at least 5 years now. This two volume set contains a wealth of information based on buying and selling over 200 of the 1986 and 1987 Turbo Regals alongside 11 real GNX cars. Both books go into great detail complete with photos on the small things I would fix on the cars I bought to resell. The small upgrades I would do prior to sale. In the one book I even like the ultra rare power Lear Siegler power bucket seat. I even show and explain why the floor mats we sell are 100% correct as the slit on the drivers side mat is only on the left side of the mat whereas to my knowledge everyone else sells the ones that have a slit on both sides of the driver floor mat.

I even show the original black AC accumulator. The new AC Delco accumulator replacement today is bare metal. The ones we sell I get them powder coated black so they look original. You pay a few bucks more but the end result is it looks original. Remember the more original you make your Turbo Regal the greater the value in years to come! In the one book I even show the 4 different part numbers for the highly desirable later factory AC Delco am/fm CD players that are a direct drop in unit. All you need is a jumper plug harness so it's a plug and play. The end result is a factory looking unit.

These two books each with over a total of over 100 pages of information pertaining to the 1986-1987 Turbo Regal contain a wealth of valuable information at your fingertips. Part number #7027 is the part number for Tips and Trivia Volume 1 for $19.95. The part number is #7088 is the part number for Tips and Trivia Volume 2 for $19.95.

MORE ORIGINAL TURBO REGAL RELATED ID LABELS -

In the March 31st 2021 Inner Circle we pictured a broadcast sheet that was attached to the inside drivers door panel. This provided the info for the assembly person to install the proper interior parts based on the VIN of the car. A similar broadcast sheet can be found in the rear spring section of the back seat. It also contained the 17 digit VIN and Buick model and interior information for that specific car. In many cases very similar to the broadcast sheet that was located in the driver's door. Again, I was not there to know the difference between the two information sheets.

I do know for the 1986 Turbo Regals the SPID label was usually mounted towards the drivers side of the inside trunk lid and was slightly different than the 1987 SPID label. Also the 1986 had a clear tape over it. You Can also find on many 1986 Turbo Regals a small round decal with the words “Deck Lid Fit Ok”. Apparently deck lid fit must have been a problem and the suit and tie guys wanted to make sure the fitment alignment was adjusted if needed on each Turbo Regal. Whatever the reason in 1987 the issue must have been solved as the 1987 models did not get this reminder on the inside deck lid!

One of those decals that in most cases got removed prior to delivery is the small white label attached to the back of the one bucket seat ashtray that made reference to the day shift at the Flint location that made the seat cushion. Why this decal was made I have no idea. Maybe the day shift was quite proud of their work and wanted the other workers to know this? We have reproduced this decal. Last but not least for this group is a small piece of green tape with the GNX letters on it. I have seen this on several low mileage GNXs attached to the firewall almost directly behind the coil pack. I imagine this was to indicate this Grand National was hand picked to be modified into a GNX. Again this is just a guess on my part. Going by memory I believe at one point ASC wanted to repaint the hand picked Grand Nationals because of the various problems in the paint. If true this may be one reason they hand picked the ones that would become a GNX. Again I am going by memory.

PHOTO 3 - The top left shows the backside of a 1986 Grand National trunk lid. You can see the clear tape over the SPID label and the small circular Deck Lid Fit decal. The top right shows the green tape with the word GNX on it. This was on the firewall behind the coil pack. The bottom left shows the seat cushion label attached to the ashtray behind the front bucket seat. The bottom right shows the Broadcast sheet that was tucked behind the rear seat springs.

MORE PAST TURBO REGAL MEMORIES -

Fortunately, over the many years we have been involved with the Turbo Regal since 1987, we have literally taken thousands of pictures. I have been a professional photographer since I was a senior in High School taking wedding pictures on my own when my Dad would have two weddings to photograph on the same day. This skill came in handy when I was sent to Vietnam and as we got off the aircraft in Cam Ranh Bay the officer in charge wanted to know who here had photography experience. If I recall three of us raised our hands. We were then whisked into a room and given a written exam. I apparently passed and got the job as the photographer for the 17th Aviation Group headquartered in Nha Trang. I would later assume the duties as the editor for the 17th Aviation Group newspaper as well. You could say this was my first writing experience!

So, over the years I have taken a lot of photos of various Turbo Regals and events. It has proven to be useful to have these various photos, especially when I wrote several books on the Turbo Regals. In the early days specific Turbo Regal events drew large numbers of Turbo Regals, many of them all original. Today the number of original Turbo Regals have dwindled and finding original Turbo Regals in any kind of numbers is quite difficult. The demand among buyers for nice original examples remains quite high as does the values of turbo cars specifically the Grand National that meet those requirements.

Every week I get calls of people looking for a nice original Turbo Regal in most cases a Grand National hardtop to buy. Potential buyers know that I know what a nice original car looks like.

PHOTO 4 - We show four photos from “Memories Gone By” The top left and top right were both taken the one year Molly attended the GS Nationals in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The top left shows Fred Vetter of Dynotech on the left and Molly on the right. The top right photo shows Molly on the left and myself on the right. The bottom left shows Trey Crease parts layout owner of Zero to Sixty. The bottom right shows Lawrence Conleys famous Tweaked Turbo Regal the year he attended one of our events at the Johnsville airbase. This photo was taken on our driveway on Sugarbottom Road around 1990 or 1991.

COMING SOON REPRINT OF MY SECOND BOOK -

The second book I wrote was in a 6 by 9 inch paperback format published once in the year 2000. It had over 190 pages and the title was “KIRBAN’S GUIDE to Buying a Used 1986 & 1987 Buick Turbo Regal”. That initial print run was a 1,000 run. It sold out probably 3-4 years ago. The first book I wrote was over 350 pages and is approaching 5,000 mark in sales! It was first printed back in 1997. (It seems so long ago now). Over the last year or so I have watched prices skyrocket on ebay and Amazon for my second book. Prices now for a copy can run as much as $150! Originally it sold for $19.95!

Fueling the demand is the values of the 1986-1987 Turbo Regals notably, the Grand National have also more than doubled from back then. You now also have a huge demand among potential buyers who are seeking a nice original example to buy. I personally get a call at least once a week from a potential buying seeing a clean original example. That second book I wrote helps potential buyers know what to look for. I remember back after I wrote the book I had several buyers refer to it when they would come look at a car I had for sale! Kinda funny actually they wanted me to autograph the book!

WIth the technology today I can get it printed locally and spiral bound. Currently we are working out the details and page size format. We hope to have this information and pricing next week. To further make this reprint more special I plan to autograph each copy! We would then have all 4 of our books available in print. This would still be a far cry from the number of books my Dad wrote during his later years which numbered over 50 including two books that passed the half million in sales. I still think it would make my Dad proud that in some small way our paths intersected.

COMING SOON OUR SPRING CONTEST -

This contest will only be eligible if you are a subscriber as the contest rules will only appear in the Rare Parts section. So if you are reading this weekly Inner Circles off our website I highly suggest you email - [email protected] and become a member.

NON-TURBO REGAL RARE FEATURES AND OPTIONS -

In last week's Inner Circle we covered what I felt are the rare features and options that Buick installed in the 1984-1987 Turbo Regals. Because of my age and my automotive background here are some of my memories of unusual features and options from cars from the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1955 or 1956 Chrysler offered a record player in some of their high end models. It played a special rpm record made specifically for the record player. Due to costs and other factors it was not a popular option. Over the years I have seen this option in a Chrysler at one of the local car shows I would usually attend. Around 1956 Chevrolet had one of the most unusual options that hooked up to the ashtray in the dash. Working on engine vacuum it would remove the cigarette smoke from the ashtray. Among those specific Chevrolet collectors probably due to demand I believe this unusual option has been reproduced. Chevrolet only offered it for 3 or 4 years.

Since the 1950s the public has become more educated about smoking in general so many car companies today don’t even put ashtrays in cars! Another unusual option which to a GTO owner went against the basic idea behind the original 1964 GTO was a tent option offered on the 1974 GTO hatchback model. Here is a name plate that in 1964 features tri-power-four speed and optional 3.90 gears completely switching gears and offering a tent option. The 1974 GTO was an emissions loaded low horsepower engine Pontiac that resembled Chevrolets Nova that year. But for any 1974 GTO owner that tent is a highly sought after option to display!

It was also possible to order certain car models for certain areas of the country with a heater delete feature such as Hawaii. Even in regular G-body models a car could have been ordered without air conditioning. These are extremely rare today. Cadillac in the late 1950s or early 1960s in their top of the line models offered a wine glass option in their cars. Unfortunately, I don’t know what years they offered this but I have seen it in certain models at car shows. This option today would be a definite no-no by car companies to even consider.

I remember two cars my parents had growing up. One of the early ones was a 1950s Pontiac. I was too young to remember the car, but according to the internet they actually had the Indian Head hood ornament would light up when you turned the headlights on. What a cool idea. One feature I do remember was on a 1956 Cadillac that my Mom had in the late 1950s. My Mom would take me driving in a cemetery back then in this Cadillac. I guess her thinking was you can’t hurt people that have already died. Back then gas stations had attendants that would pump the gas for you. The 1956 Cadillac hid the gas fill behind the left tail light. You pushed in a small button at the base of the tail light assembly and the tail light would pop up exposing the gas fill. Chevrolet also offered a similar format I believe in 1956 and 1957.

I am sure other unique features and options from the 1950s and 1960s cars could also be added to this list, however these are the ones I am familiar with from my past.

REFURBISHED GRAND NATIONAL STEERING WHEEL -

If you currently want a redone grey leather 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel call our office now 215-766-1611. We may have one coming in that is not already sold. Finding acceptable cores is the hindering problem we have to get nice ones redone.

IN STOCK LIMITED SUPPLY -

I have just a few sets of the popular Pypes dual exhaust systems. This is the 2 ½ format. The price is $629.95. Part number #6996. Once I sell out of in stock inventory they will not have more systems available until possibly June. We also have several of the Cold Case radiators available. Part #7457 the price is $419.95. One of the most popular items we sell is the grey interior paint. Our part number 6822. The cost is $19.95 a can. Remember interior plastic parts can gradually fade each year. It is also the correct grey to repaint the steering column.

MORE NEW TURBO REGAL PARTS COMING SOON -

Our goal is to add several new Turbo Regal parts each week to expand our product line. Coming soon a nice compact upgraded front brake set up that is a direct bolt on. A welcome upgrade to increase stopping ability no matter what brake system you have.

BRING A TRAILER - 1986 YUGO -

We had a customer of ours forward us a link where this website lists a 1986 Yugo for sale. Last driven back in 1992. Car has a Pennsylvania title. Dealer has it in Maryland. Auction has ended. I looked at the bid about two days prior to the auction ending and it was already bid to $2250. Car only has 14,000 miles on it. What I find interesting is the 1986 lowly Yugo has a speedometer that reads to 115 mph whereas the Turbo Regal listed as the fastest accelerating US car model only reads to 85 mph. Personally, $2250 seems a bit high to pay for just one Yugo! I like one for a lawn ornament. Course with a mere 14,000 original miles you could own a fairly rare example!

We still badly need good 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheel cores. They can’t be rusted or bent. Each one is worth a $150 letter of credit from us.

IMPORTANT - INFORMATION ABOUT OUR SHIPPING ADDRESS –

If you are returning any cores or products, it is important that you send them to the correct address.

KIRBAN PERFORMANCE PRODUCTS
529 HAYCOCK RUN ROAD

We discovered that FedEx will not forward any packages that are sent to the old PO Box or to our old address in Plumsteadville. Instead they deliver the packages to the old address and leave them outside or send them back to the shipper. They refuse to forward and say that we should notify the shipper. In most cases, we have no idea when we are getting packages shipped back to us.

If you have any cores that are being sent back to us, be sure to use the correct address, especially if you use FedEx. Otherwise, we may not receive your package or it may be sent back to you.

Good news - We now accept Classified Ads in our weekly Inner Circle emails. Over the years several customers have asked about placing an ad in our weekly Inner Circle.
Here are the options and the costs.

You can only run one ad at any given time. We will have a code system at the end of your ad, so we will know what week number your ad is to run - 2 or 4 weeks.

It can be an ad for something for sale or an ad for something you are looking for.
We have never missed a single week since we started the Inner Circle email format in 2009. It’s something I enjoy doing and I just always seem to have enough material to write about.

NOTE - ABOUT LINKS IN THE INNER CIRCLE -

We have heard from a couple people that have had problems with the links in our Inner Circle.

When we check the links, they work fine. However, if you are not able to be directed to the exact website page or internet site, you can "copy" and "paste" the link into the URL in your browser (such as Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, etc.) If it doesn't link in one browser, it may work in another.

Most people having problems are using Internet Explorer. If you are having issues with links, try another browser to see if it works.

You may need to "UPDATE" your browser to be used if you are using the current version.

NOTE ABOUT PHOTOS ON THE WEBSITE -

We have heard from a couple people that have viewed the photos on the website. Because these must be low-resolution photos to work on the Inner Circle segments on the website, any photos of text don't appear clear when enlarged. This is a problem when you are trying to see numbers, such as those on the VIN labels or pages from Options booklet. Also, because of photo reproduction and computer screen variations, the colors may not be true to the actual product or photo.

If you would like to have us email you any photo at the higher resolution for viewing, just email us and we will email them to you. Be sure to be specific on which pictures you want to see - Reference Inner Circle date and photo number 1, 2, 3 or 4 - [email protected]

ABOUT OUR EMAILS -

Any inquiries concerning used parts, you must email me directly - [email protected] - and I will answer you. However, if I fail to answer you within 24 hours, please email us again. Since expanding into used parts, I get a lot of emails and sometimes I may forget your request or may not remember who requested the item.

IN CLOSING -

URGENT REQUEST - Please, if you have any original 1986-1987 Turbo Regal turbos, cash them in with us for the $175 Letter of Credit. This helps us help our customers obtain the rebuilt turbo they need for their car. We also badly need acceptable 1986-1987 Turbo Regal steering wheels in order to continue to offer them redone for customers.
